Hi geeks!

I've finally made a decision... Last year my clients were asking if I did all these other beauty treatments, so I decided to train up and offer waxing, threading, ear candles, make up, lash extensions, tinting and lash lifts/perms.

Since February, when I qualified, I have done a grand total of:
1 lash lift & tint
2 brow tints
15 sets of lash extensions
2 sets of cluster lashes
1 wedding (make up for bride and others)
3 threading appts
10 upper lip waxes/7 brow waxes/2 leg waxes
5 ear candle treatments

And yet I'm fully booked with nails!

Does anyone think it's a bad business move or have I made the right choice? I'm never going to make my money back. I'll have the qualifications for life, just not the kit! Have any of you done this, gotten rid of treatments as they're not popular?

Xxx

For treatments with low product cost where the stuff wont go out of date (threading and ear candlling for eg) i would keep them on the treatment menu because its like well why not. But the plan overall sounds constructive if you want to go with nails.

Facials for me. I just can't shift them for love nor money. I promote them, discount them. My clients just don't want them. I've probably done about 10 facials in 3 years.

I've stopped doing facials as well, I found it too difficult working mobile and needing all the bits and bobs. I'd have a mountain of washing after each client and for me, I just felt like it was a massive amount of work and just too much stuff needed.
When I find a wonder product that gives WOW results and is a lot less faffing round, then I will do them again.

I'm in the middle of working out where I'm going with working mobile, and what treatments I will offer. I want to whittle it down to core treatments that don't need a lot of storage space and are easy for me to grab and go kit wise. I think I just feel a bit overwhelmed at the mo!

It's a good idea to re- look at what's making you money and re-assess your treatments. Also important to factor in what you enjoy doing.

My favourite brand is dermalogica and that would be my brand of choice if i was self employed. Having said that, i dont know many therapists who are self employed who do facials...seems to be more about the immediate results type treatments...tanning waxing nails etc.

Looking at what you offer, I would keep facial waxing and possibly lash extensions, they don't take up a lot of space, lash extensions are a premium treatment so I am assuming you have been charging well for them and already have kit. Facial waxing - you already have a wax heater (I presume), and with offering facial waxing (which you have done a bit of), is an easy and quick treatment, a good add on and one pot of wax doesn't break the bank or eat anything, and has a relatively long shelf life, depending on brand.

This is just my opinion.

Hi, I'm not sure if your mobile or salon based. Obviously if your salon based then its easy to keep things stored away until you need them abit more tricky if your having to cart everything around in your car.

If you have room on your price list - why not keep them on and see what happens.

You paid for the training and all the kits, "its still early days".

I think its hard to introduce nail clients to other treatments because thats their main priority and if they can only afford one or the others nails win. I think facials are the nicest of all treatments and until anyone tries them they wont realise, even in training when i was young it was my favourite but the younger don't see the benefits yet. Don't take treatments off your menu if you can afford to keep the stock in, it just getting people tp try other, and if they ask you and you dont they will go elsewhere x

I really think you have to do what's best for you and your pocket at this point. I find clients ask for a lot and then you offer that service they no longer want it. It's kind of like the greedy child syndrome.. Child wants toy that other child is playing with, once offered that exact toy the child no longer is interested. On that not I would keep waxing, candling and threading as these are things that never go off like other products do.

I would LOVE to give up doing facials. In five years I only have one client that is a regular every month or so. No matter how hard I push them, no matter how much I talk up the amazing facial products I carry and use no one bites. I've only been able to do them as a service when I put them on super offer or give a free mini facial with purchase. But it's not a major complaint as I hate them with a passion lol I'm booked full with nails as well

I stopped nail extensions, they werent profitable, I hated doing them and people were saying they were quicker and cheaper in NSS salons. I dont regret that at all.

However my facials are really popular mobile! I made sure I used a luxurious brand, took my steamer and my iPod with relaxing music, dim the lights sometimes draw the curtains and the client feels as relaxed as they would in a salon an they love it!

What brand are you using NatNat

Nails are my thing, thats what i want to do so when i started this home salon i just advertised nails as that is what most people want anyway. I have since added waxing/tinting and spray tans and do have regular clients for eyebrow waxing and tinting and lash tinting and the odd spray tan. I have thought about adding other treatments but i dont really want to and if you are busy enough woth nails how you can you fit the other treatments in??

I have been toying with adding eyelash extensions as i get asked for them alot and no one local does them but for now i am concentrating on offering EVERYTHING to do with nails!

Go with what you think is best for you and your business and whats most cost effective. It wont harm as others said to keep the waxing/tinting and lash extensions, none of that will go out of date fast xx

I stopped doing body massage and facials 10 years ago. I still do waxing, tinting as they are always requested. I specialised in nails. As this is my biggest earner. Don't give up too much as when you stop doing it you will get asked for it!

Personally i think you should keep them. i think it will eventually make you enjoy them more, and gain more experience in them. I also feel that with these treatments you're able to have a variety every day rather than concentrating on the nail side of things. Its good to mix it up a bit. xoxo

The trouble with keeping treatments on that are rarely performed is that you can loose the skill set that is required to be good and quick at them. Also keeping unused stock is expensive. Waxing and lash extensions seem to be the best out of them. However if you do lots of nails I think it would be better to offer a wider variety of treatments/products associated with that instead - easier to upsell and become a true specialist.

Lash extensions were the first to go I'm afraid, the glue goes off after 3 months and I only had 1 regular client for Infills... The only reason I did so many sets is because I had them on offer for £20! Since I upped them to £30 I had 1 client who got Infills every 6 weeks. I'm just going to concentrate on everything nails, as like souz says, it's hard to introduce the nail clients to other treatments!

I do everything to do with nails, which is why my name is TipToe Nails and not TipToe Nails & Beauty... I'm known for my nails so it works for me :)

I'm actually quite relieved to be getting rid of that expensive unused stock... I'll have ear candles and waxing left (plus threading but I don't particularly enjoy that so won't advertise it, only if someone asks).

For those of you who stopped offering certain treatments, do you find clients were ok with that decision? i would love to take facials off my list of services but not sure if it would be a smart move in case i lose money long term. right now after 4 years facials are just not popular for me no matter what i do and im tired of stock going off because it sits unused

my clients are fine with me just offering what i do. I have been asked for facials but have done a survey with clients to see if it was worth doing, it was the one thing they all asked for so im looking at maybe introducing it but just using a simple facial range.

Ive been looking at love your skin products as i know the lady who started the company and she really knows her stuff where facials are concerned! Not too expensive for me to bring in and i know they will give good results. I dont imagine to be honest that i will do many or be able to fit many in but in the quieter weeks maybe it will be good? who knows but worth a try xx

You know - I feel exactly the same! I don't know whether to branch out into eyelash extensions or become a master of all things nails! Decisions decisions??
