Thank you credit crunch!
I've lost my job and am a bit stuck as to where to go. I've sent like, a million CV's out and no luck.
Was thinking about doing mobile - maybe it's the wrong time but was just wondering if you mobile techs think it's a good path to go down.
Dunno what to ask really, just general advice really.
Sorry it's such a vague thread but my heads a mess.

I dont have advice re mobile s am just finishing my training for all things beauty related. BUT I do have some hopefully good info for you. I have been able to access funding for retraining through an organisation called react. I have no idea if they work in your area, but maybe you have an equivalent in your area and thought you might be able to get some advice and help from them. google in ReAct but if you need any help please let me know.

Well, fuel prices are way down now, so thats not the issue it was a couple of months ago.
You need to sit with paper and pen and work out what you already have and what you need to have. Note the word need as apposed to the word want.
You need a car
You need a mobile phone
You need products
You need secure cases for your products
You need good advertising
You need insurance
A credit crunch can actually be good news for the mobile tech because rightly or wrongly joe public often think that a mobile tech will be better value for money.
I however hated being mobile and even though my circumstances never allowed me to get my home studio of the ground, that would still be my preferred option.
I hated not being in control of my working environment, smokers, pet hair..................children..................husbands:Scared:
Any way back to your question:lol:
If you can keep your start up costs down i.e. you're not going to have to go and buy a car or any other major outlay, then I would give it a go,but you have to keep it in mind that all businesses need time to get up and running. This is the time of year to pick up clients, yes some of them will just be for the party season and yes January is very quiet but you'll also keep some clients and its a good time to get your talents talked about and if all your clients have your cards to hand out to all their friends, well word of mouth is still the best way to generate business.
Good luck hun:hug:

personnaly i think its a bad time to go mobile and get new clients, if you dont already have them. its hard enough trying to build a client base when you starting out anyway, but with todays climate, i think it will be harder still.

but there is no harm in trying flower, as they say "you have to speculate to accumilate"

hope it works out for ya flower

I'm sorry but I'm not going to be much help for advice, as I am in the middle of training with college and love it!
Just don't let your job less get you down, or make you lose your enthusiasm for what you love doing. It is a difficult time, but I do hope you sort your messy head out lol! Maybe do friends and family for now to keep you going, until you decide what to do?
Good luck! :green:

I don't necessarily think it' a good time to start a new business at all, mobile or otherwise, at the moment. However, needs must.

If you have everything you need and the skill to do it and don't have work then what are you waiting for? I thought I wouldn't get any new clients this side of Christmas as I've only just started out mobile but I have. I've had three new clients book with me this week.

I find the best advertisement is my own work on my own hands, good work on others hands and client referrals/word of mouth.

I've donated some gift vouchers to primary schools for christmas fairs and they will be giving out my business cards etc., so this could generate new custom as well. There are some people who don't want to go into a salon for one reason or another and others just prefer the convenience. As long as you don't mind going to them and packing/unpacking your kit and allowing time for this then I'd go for it until something turns up.

I personally think there is no reason NOT to start a business at this time of year/current climate.

People, especcially ladies will always want to look good, there are still alot of ladies out there with disposable income. Most of my new clients are young women in the 19-25year ago group with no mortgage or rent as they still live at home and have lots of money to spend on themselves.

Chrsitmas is the best time to start a beauty business, what other time of year do ladies want their nails done as much as now? All those parties and family get togethers etc.

I say go for it, you've nothing to lose.

I dont do nails huni , not false ones anyway but i'm finding the credit crunch hasnt affected me and i am mobile & still getting new clients.
People always want their nails done and i dont think the credit crunch will affect them from doing so.My clients say it hasnt even affected them.
Get out there with your flyers!! Got to think positive and you will never know unless you try!
Good luck sweetie

do you think this is a good time to be starting mobile, as i have a full time job and not dependant on my nails income, so i have time to get established without the worry of no money coming in x:hug:

As Gilly T says.... "needs must".....

I'm currently on maternity leave and preparing to set up as a self employed Nail Technician in April next year. With "the credit crunch" upon us, times may not be as affluent as they could but there are always people who ARE willing to spend on having their nails done.

The key to it as I believe is dedication, perseverance.... and good marketing - get your name out there. There are advantages and dsadvantages to all types of working be it renting a space, mobile, etc. And what suits one person may not suit another..... It's what works for you.....

I am actually planning on renting a space 3 days per week and then offering appointments in evenings and weekends either at the client's home or at my own home. I will make myself as available as possible and, with having 3 young children, this is the best fit. You need to be prepared to fit around your clients.

Good luck to you whatever you decide to do. x

I have recently started as self employed working from home, i dont get alot of clients at the mo, im a full time mum so i dont work in the day only evenings when kids are in bed. Im also in the middle of moving so my mind is on other things aswell as getting new clients, but i think if you have the motivation to get out there and do it then go for it. Make your own leaflets and price lists, this will save you money. Give everyone you know your business cards to hand out to their freinds and family. Hope i have helped a little x x x good luck with what ever you choose x x :)

I will open my salon ( skincare and nails ) next week. Everyone keeps warning about bad times, but as I think we all know.... women spend and shop anyway. People might postpone buying a new car, home, tv or furniture... but you can always afford a lipstick, a manicure, a new hairdo or new nails.
Because they are important for us women, and when we feel bad we want at least to look beautiful.
( I think chocolatemakers will do very well too  )

With the right attitude there is no such thing as a good or bad time to start. If you have fire in your belly you will get out there and create a desire for your clients to book with you. It does help to have some clients to start with - how are your family? Get out there and Good Luck
