I've got my NVQ2 beauty therapy exam at the Carlton Institute 2 weeks from tomorrow. Has anyone else done their assessment there (I'm doing it in Windsor)? How did the day go? What can I expect?

Clearly, I'm not asking yas for answers, I'm just trying to get a feel for what to expect on the day so I can be as unshakeable as possible when it comes to the exam.

Were you examined in a big or small group? Did you have to carry out every treatment? Did any questions on the theory paper come as a suprise to you? (that is to say, you're only asked what the revision guide tells you to study right?!) How was the aural testing? (I'm told that if you get anything between 70-99% on the test paper, they test you aurally to see if you can get full marks).....did you have to get 100% on everything to pass?

Any feedback would be massively appreciated here. I'm doing everything I believe I can do in order to be ready for the exam but any additional pointers based on other peoples experiences of the exam there would be greatly appreciated.

Hoping to get some replies here and after the exam day, no matter how it goes I'm going to do a blog on here as I'm sure it will be useful for others :)

I don't know what its like at The Carlton Institute but I can tell you about my own BT NVQ2 exam at college.

For the practical assesments we did 5 or 6 of each treatment, each carried out in 'exam conditions'.

We sat an exam for each module i.e one for facials, waxing etc and I think the relevant A & P was included in each exam.
We were in the college hall and the conditions were the same as when I did my GCSE's - silent, small seperate desks, if you're late you cannot come in.

We had to get 80% of the questions right, the other 20% would be asked orally after the exam was marked, you had to get this correct first time and you were not told what you had got wrong before hand, but if you thought you may have got something wrong in the written exam then look that up when you get home. You need 100% to pass.

With regards to revising... I had a quick look over my huge NVQ folder before the exam but as I had been at college doing my level 2 for a whole year (albeit only 2 full days a week, rather than full time as I was an adult learner) I did not feel the need to revise for the test. I loved learning my trade for that year and doing everything over and over again for a year drummed everything into me so no questions were a surprise

That said, I definatly had to revise for the 12 A & P exams for level 3.

I thought doing 2 years at college meant I had learned everything I needed to learn but how wrong I was - every day I learn new things and Im always looking to learn new treatments and techniques and thats why I love my job x

If you've loved what you've learnt and been to all your lessons then you've nothing to worry about. You'll be fine.

I think you can retake the exam once if you need to.

Just relax and be confident and you'll do great - Good Luck xxx:hug:

P.S Im recalling my experiences from 6 years a go so I hope I ve got everything right.

Hi there,

I'm completely new to this so apologies if Ive posted in the wrong place or anything along those lines...

I'm looking into doing the NVQ level 2 course at the Carlton Institute and wondered if anyone had attended, could recommend or review...

Any thoughts would be much appreciated

xx :)

Hi there! I have done quite a few individual courses in Windsor at the Carlton and don't worry! They are lovely! For example - in the waxing assessment I only had to wax one underarm and demonstrate waxing on one leg!!! I had to tell the assessor what I was doing and why etc etc. Make sure you have revised for the written part of the test but they will test you orally if you get a bit stuck - honestley, nothing to be nervous about. There were probably on average about ten of us there each time but you work on your own with your model and its all very quiet and calm. Good Luck!

Hi there,

I hope that your exams went well! Can I just ask if you had trouble with your portfolio? I did the NVQ2 at Carlton in Windsor and I find they get annoyed if I call up and ask questions. I just can't seem to get my head around it. I thought their practical courses were great but there was no after care putting your portfolio together.
