Hello Salon Geeks,

I moved to a new town and went to a salon who stocked Tigi colour range like my old salon did. I thought I would get a near same experience but I was sadly wrong. I am getting a colour put in for a wedding.

Patch test was conducted and strand tests taken to check the colour would match the photo of the desired colour I wanted. When I arrived I had waist length bleach blonde hair with an inch regrowth (hair naturally level 6.) The colour at the time was a little brassy as I had not used my violet shampoo for the last month. I wanted to go a little darker. Salon felt it was easy enough to do but stressed the ends were very porous and would need to be cut. I agreed to 3 inches off suggested as this would remove the porous part.

The stylist started to cut my hair to chin length. I said that looks a little short and she explained it would not be that short all the way that she was going to feather from the chin down to make layers at the front. Bit like Jennifer Anniston. I said phew I thought it was all going to come off! She said of course not. She then moved to cut the back where I could not see... to cut a long story short she cut my hair to shoulder length.... I noticed half way through and I was clearly upset. She said it seemed shorter than it was because my hair was wet and has a slight wave and when dried and straightened it would be bra strap length. I was very dubious and upset - I am not confrontational and thought what can I do? I cannot ask for it to be sticked back on. I thought to myself don't cry at least you can grow your hair out to be super healthy. I was very upset and it was visible.

Stylist then pre-pigmented my hair bright orange. Then applied Tigi Color Creative 7/4 over the top. The colour did not go to the same light chestnut blonde colour the strand test had. Instead it was a bright red colour with orange patches and no brown.... the colour looked hideous on me. I was horrified when I could see she was blow drying my hair and appeared to be finishing the style. I said are you nearly done as the colour is a bit ginger red for me. I noticed the stylist seemed annoyed but she did not say anything the moment she saw how the colour developed. She then walked off without saying word into the staffroom not to appear for 15 minutes. Another hairdresser who had been watching this all unfurl. Eventually came over to me in her absence and asked if I was ok. She said it must be a big shock to have so much cut off and I explained I never wanted my hair that short. I was crying (quietly) and silently pointed to the picture of the hair colour it was meant to be. The empathetic stylist said not to worry and the bright red was not so bad. I could tell she was just trying to be nice. She shuffles into the staffroom to get my hairdresser out to deal with me.

From this point the stylist get saying: haven't you somewhere you should be and blaming me for using shop bought colour boxes on my hair. I have not had a colour on my hair in 15 years. My last salon would just 'bleach' the colour out to a blonde. I felt upset as I had not shouted, swore or cause a spectacle. I did not understand why I was being treated so badly. I explained I had taken the day off to do my hair for the wedding and I would not have felt happy leaving the salon with bright orange hair.

Her face has changed she looks moody and states she has spoken to the other hairdressers and they have decided to put a level 6.0 glossing colour (semi) over the top. This would give the exact light brown I wanted. I said thank you and presumed I was not being charged for this colour correction as there clearly had been a problem. When the colour is washed out my hair is a dark dark brown in a block colour, it has a very undesirable bright red glow in the light. If you lift sections the colour is not even.

I am clearly unhappy and she says well you have to pay now.... she gives the price of £90 I punch my PIN into the machine in tears. I just wanted to be out because of the aggressive atmosphere. When I get home I noticed I have been charge £140.

Once home my friends and family are in shock, the colour is not even and awful. I was known for having very long thick blonde wavy hair - it looked beautiful. I actually would have complete strangers tug on my hair asking where my extensions were from! Now I look like a Lego lady and do not want to leave the house.

I phoned the salon first thing in the morning to state I was really upset with my hair and did not want to leave the house or go to work. That I could not tie my hair back as I had a 50p pence stain on my forehead and about 1/2 inch jagged stain across my hairline. I tried scrubbing with soap, coconut oil and nothing would budge it. I begged for her to try and restore my hair to a light colour. She refused stating I knew my hair would turn black/red which was a complete lie. She also refused to colour correct my hair or offer a refund. I asked if she could at the very least budge the stains from my forehead to which she said they did not have anything in the salon. She said I should use milk. Milk does not work. In the short she was shouting at me down the phone - I am quite a timid person and just went into tears. I begged to talk to the salon manager but she was not in on either day.

I am now in the situation where I have wrote a formal letter to the salon manager by recorded mail. I have explained all the above with photos. I am scared to go into the salon even if they do offer to correct the colour as I have lost faith in their skills, experience and customer service. I feel I have no choice but to request a refund which I have never had to do anywhere. I am going to have to pay for a colour correction at another salon which is expensive... I have now both a wedding and a funeral I need to attend in one week's time and I cannot bring myself to leave the house.

As the hairdresser refused to correct or do anything to my hair. I feel I am in my right to try another salon. I got a consultation at another salon who was horrified at the result. They too are a Tigi salon. The new salon points out how the regrowth is still showing. She lifts sections of hair to show how the orange and red are glowing through and look uneven. The new salon is very popular and fully booked all the time, the new salon feels so sorry for me they have bent over backwards to fit me in this week.

What rights do I have to request a refund from the other salon? What can I do when a salon refuses to help? I am so upset but don't want the same thing to happen to someone else either. I was overcharged also by an amount I did not agree to (ok I did put PIN in but I was upset and told forcefully I had to pay.) The hair disaster salon lady has no customer skills and no empathy. What can I do?

This is AWFUL.

The way you've been treated is absolutely appalling. You are way within your rights to request a refund! Not only that you've been over charged!

I'm so sorry this has happened to you! I wish you the best of luck in getting it sorted.

How do you go about getting a refund if the hairdresser will not cooperate. The salon manager was not there on both occasions I went to the salon. Alarm bells rang when I went on early afternoon Saturday and the salon was shut. I would imagine a successful salon would be full of bookings this time of year on a Saturday. I wanted to hand deliver my letter and speak face to face but was very scared to be honest. I don't think I could have taken the shouting again.

If the salon refuses to respond what can I do in such a situation?

Take loads of pics before you go to the other salon and ask them if they would write saying it was not a professional job. Tell the salon that you are requesting a refund as soon as you can and say that you have had your hair checked by another salon who agree it's not a professional job. Ask them for a refund immediately. Don't threaten them with small claims but use this as a back up. The pictures above aren't very clear so take lots in daylight.

Sorry, I'm not a hair geek I just feel very angry on your behalf.

Thank you Vic. I have taken photos in daylight - the above photo actually looks lighter than it is in real life. Unfortunately I had to shrink the photos so the file size would be small enough to upload o Salon Geek. The new salon who has been so kind to fit me in for a colour correction was very sympathetic. They are a rival salon in the same town. I was so thankful they bent over backwards to fit me in I did not know if it would be right to ask for a written report on their opinion. In other words I do not know if such a professional salon would be willing to 'badmouth' a rival.

She was very considered with her words during the consultation but I could see she was just as horrified as I was. Especially when you compare with the target colour I went in with. She did provide a written invoice for the cost of correction. She has offer an Olaplex service on top to ensure the hair does not get damaged - in other words I feel safe in her hands. The salon also free of charge offered to remove the stains from my forehead using a specialist cleaner. In other words, I feel bad a new salon is having to rectify the mistakes of another salon.

It honestly looks like a home dye job gone wrong - thank goodness I have an unitemised receipt to prove otherwise.

Omg that is terrible if you lived near me i would offer to fix the colour for free xx

Thank you tresses - I was made to feel I was in the wrong and I am so glad for the support.

Jeez I am angry on your behalf!! They have treated you like utter sh1te quite frankly. Definitely within your rights to ask for refund. As much as I know you are afraid to, def go back and ask for the manager. I would not leave until I had spoken to manager/owner as what they did is just not on!!
I also reckon new salon are used to this too... good luck!! Xx

Thank you for replying Katy unfortunately the salon manager was not in on either day I went in. I am hoping there will be a response to my letter sent recorded signed for - if its not ripped in two before getting to the salon manager.

Sadly, your experience is not uncommon. Far too many hairdressers with very basic colour knowledge attempt complex colour services with no real clue about what they are doing and end up creating a mess for others to fix.

This salon has clearly acted dishonestly by charging you more than was agreed and I'd be inclined to report them for that incident alone, to Trading Standards. Personally, I wouldn't accept a full refund as adequate recompense as I think they should be stumping up the extra cost to correct their errors.

On the plus side, as your new salon uses Olaplex, they probably do know what they're doing. Hairdressers who aren't interested in keeping up with developments in techniques and products are less likely to have heard of it.

I hope you walk out of the new salon looking fabulous!

Thank you haircutz I am dreading walking into that salon. I guess the fact I could pretty much pick and choose my appointment two days in advance should have been a warning. There are also no reviews for the salon on Google. I just went on its modern look at the fact it bore the Tigi range. I am so upset at myself but I have never had a bad salon experience up to now.

I feel terrible for you. I'm not a hair geek but I did have someone scam money from me recently. Like yourself I hate confrontation but I braced myself and stuck to my guns because I knew I was in the right and it worked. I think you should do the same.

I pestered them constantly and they refunded my money.

The results are nothing like you asked for and they overcharged you, as well as the horrific way they have treated you.

Let us know how you get on. Best of luck xxx

Thank you, I feel I have to give the salon manager a chance to respond. I am hoping they might want to maintain their salon's reputation. I feel more safe in the hands of the new salon I consulted with, so will not go back the bad salon. I will contact Trading Standards as I am upset that I have been defrauded out of money and I feel the service is far below the standard of a prudent colourist.

This has so very much upset me reading this. I cannot believe the way in which you've been treated. Looking at your original photo to what you wanted was actually quite simple. I cannot believe they could have got it so wrong.

And to charge you for correcting their bodged job is unthinkable! You stick to your guns and stand up for yourself.

They should give you a full refund. I wouldn't trust them to fix your hair. Good luck.

Oh my god this is awful. I feel upset for you. Straight away the stylist obviously didn't know what they were doing. I just hope it all gets sorted.... and why they would cut that much off the length is beyond me x

Hi Sugarplumfaery, I thought what I wanted was quite simple too. I did ask for low lights to be put in but she refused and said it would look bad. I put my faith in her that an all over colour was needed. I am not a hairdresser or colourist by profession so I have no idea what all the hair numbers on dyes would have result in on my hair. Could a professional tell me given the above colour numbers used if I had any chance in hell of that light chestnut blonder colour I intended?

Also I would like to say I have been overwhelmed that so many of you have taken time out of your Sunday to reply. So thank you, what an awesome community of hair professionals you are.

Milly I'm not a hairdresser but I also have very long hair and I'd be devastated if a hairdresser cut that much off my hair!! I really feel for you x

Awww bless you! I've witnessed a similar situation before when I was at college.... It was one of the tutors that made the mistake though!!
It's things like this that make me more determined to learn colour correction services to help fix these kind of 'disasters' for want of a better word!
Im smart enough not to even contemplate trying to fix and correct colours at the moment, but obviously many inexperienced hairdressers aren't! Look forward to seeing pics of your hair when it has been fixed :)
Hopefully your hair grows quick too! Xx

I always thought losing the length would be the worst thing ever. Surprisingly I seem more fixated on the dreadful colour. The colour is so fake looking and not matching my complexion. I am upset about the length though as it took so long to grow it out and it was in pretty good condition bar the two inches at the ends.

@Xx-melo-xX I am sure you'll make a great colourist. Thanks for stopping by.
