Here is what they look like. It's unbrushed and still a bit wet but it gives you an idea of breakage and the rope look I was trying to describe.

I was considering this because my own hair has greasy roots and dry ends. I don't really shampoo the extensions as they haven't been dirty but I can't avoid getting them wet when I shampoo my own hair. I do condition them though. I was using Beauty Works shampoo and conditioner but I've just read the label and it's full of SLS so I've bought some Balmain products and a Balmain leave in conditioner for extensions.
I think this is why you are having problems. If you have been fitted with Beauty Works hair then you should really be using their recommended products. You can use these on your own hair too. I can not believe that you were told you could leave your hair to dry naturally, this will most definitely cause your hair to mat and in all instances cause the extensions to slip. When you wash your hair let the shampoo "run" down the lengths of the extensions and rinse it properly. You must dry your hair on a low to warm heat starting at the roots, sectioning the hair will help with this. Don't forget to add heat protection but not on the roots. If you are still having problems then I suggest you go back to your stylist. Good Luck!

Where is the "breakage"?
This is what it would look like if left to dry naturally.

Thanks for your help. I'm not using the Balmain yet. It hasn't arrived. I'm still only using Beauty Works. I was told I could let it dry naturally and for the first few weeks it looked beautiful so I didn't question it. I'm washing it how you describe. That's what I was told by my stylist. Beauty works website doesn't say how to dry it apart from advising to avoid heat styling.

It didn't look like this for the first few weeks. It looked beautiful dried naturally. That's why I was worried. If it won't damage it then I'll use a hairdryer but it seems a shame as it looked so good dried naturally at first. See below.

Do you know which range of Beautyworks it was? Is it a gold weft?

Goldish if that makes sense. The packaging says Mane Attraction. 100% Remy Human Hair.

I just wanted to take the time to say a really big thank you to everyone who has replied. I wasn't expecting such a great response in such a short period of time. It means a lot that you professionals are willing to help out someone who isn't even one of your own clients. As a non-professional I was really nervous about posting on here but one of my friends recommended this forum. The beauty industry gets a lot of bad press and it's hard to know where to go for advice. I don't know the correct terminology and I really appreciate your patience. It's also difficult because you don't want to sound like you're criticising someone's hard work. The stylist who put them in has done an amazing job. I know how much pride you guys take in your work and how disappointed you are when things don't work out for a client which is why I've been reluctant to go back and complain.

I've used a BW mask and blowdried them today and used a detangler as well as the BW protection spray. They look a bit better but they still look and feel dry and rough even after argan oil, shine spray and straightening. Friends and family all say they don't look in good condition and that I should send them back. I'm going in to have them tightened on Tuesday so I will just have to see what my stylist says. BW don't guarantee them beyond one month though and it will be one month at the end of next week.

You have done everything right. You've used BW shampoo. Leaving them to dry naturally will NOT cause this problem. The only problem with not drying hair extensions is with bonded extensions. Anyone can leave a weave to dry natural if they choose. My tape hair and weave clients regularly leave them to air dry. No problem. Your contract is with the salon who fitted them, not with BW. If they are a good salon the will replace the weft free of charge and deal with BW themselves. That's what I would do for a client in this situation. Don't leave it and don't feel bad.

Saw my stylist today. Good news and bad. The hair is slightly damaged but completely recoverable. It was too dry. I washed it too much and I'm not using the masks regularly enough. Washing it too much in the first two weeks has stripped off protective coating. I can also use a lot more oil on them than I thought. There is very little actual breakage and very little shedding.
I was beginning to think it was okay yesterday anyway. I used a hair mask and blow dried it and that made it look fabulous again. In my experience when hair is genuinely damaged no amount of straightening and product can make it look that good.
Thank you all much for all your help guys. I feel so much more confident about looking after my hair and I have really learnt a lot.
Respect!

I had Beauty Works 18 inch weft extensions fitted 3 weeks ago. They were amazing for 2 weeks but I'm having some problems now with breakage and the hair is starting to look strange. The hair feels very dry and without frequent brushing it has started to look like ropes. It's tangling easily and needs brushing frequently to look normal. They are quite long extensions (I fell in love and couldn't bare to have much taken off). To add insult to injury you can now see a noticeable difference between the texture of my own hair and the extensions. They were previously completely indistinguishable from my own naturally wavy hair.
I've been scrupulous with my aftercare: avoid SLS, plait before bedtime, argan oil daily, no brushing them when wet, no hairdryer, almond oil once a week, special soft brush, washing every other day/two days, no products except Kerstase elixir and pure argan oil and a small amount of batiste on my fringe and behind my ears as I'm quite greasy. I straightened them once with an Asavea brush last weekend. Could that have done this? The hair was dry and I used lots of heat protector.
Is there anything else I should be doing? Am I doing something wrong? Is there a problem with the extensions.
This may be due to two distinct reasons. The prime cause of such a problem may be due to an inexperienced hair stylist or a hair extension specialist, a substandard hair extension salon or very inferior quality hair extensions that is sourced from third world countries. The second cause may be due to improper upkeep and maintenance of your hair extensions which has resulted in such a problem. Immediately consult a renowned hair extension salon in your neighborhood.

Hello, I've been doing hair for 20+ years and extensions for more than half that time. It sounds like an issue with the hair quality. If I were you, I would clarify the hair with a professional clarifying shampoo. I would then(keeping all products away from your bond sites)do an Olaplex stand alone treatment to help add strength which will help with the tangles. Then I would follow with a deep protein then moisture treatment and leave in(I love It's a Ten line-seems to have a great protein and moisture balance) Maybe try this once or twice a week for a few weeks and see if you can salvage them? You should see and feel a difference after one or two sessions

Thanks. I was hoping I could use Olaplex on them. Its quite hard only applying it to my own hair. I'm still getting to grips with washing them and using masks etc. I can't get my hair at back of my neck under my extensions properly clean and the beauty works conditioner doesn't detangle my hair very well. I have to be honest. I don't think some of the beauty works products are that good. The packaging is cheap. The heat protection spray nozzle doesn't work and the spray makes my hair greasy. The ingredients lists on the bottles have loads of typos. The shampoo has masses of SLS.

How long would you leave in the deep protein moisture treatment for?

I like to leave on for at least 10-20 min if possible and avoiding the bonded area near the scalp

The Olaplex worked a treat. Only the last couple of inches of hair look dodgy now. I'm still having trouble keeping my own hair clean now I'm sticking to a regime of only washing every 2 days instead of every other day but I'm getting better. I've stopped using the Beauty Works products. I'm using Balmain instead and my hair is a lot better.
