husband started to feel ill yesterday.

He's now in bed in pain, his neck hurts, he aches all over, he has a headache (these are all meningitis symptom)
but he also has a cough and a snotty nose.

so is it flu, virus or meningitis?

oh and last night he was shaking with cold although he was normal temperature.

He has no spots, no vomitting and no light sensitivity.

(I kept a little card from my son's bounty pack 9 years ago stating symptoms in babies and adults, so reading off that).

It sounds like he has a bad dose of flu tbh, but if he gets worse, I'd call the doc.
You can also ring the NHS Helpline - can't find the number, but if you googled NHS Helpline it'll come up.

My husband was rushed to hospital a few years ago by the doc, he did have meningitis, but I thought it was man-flu!
some of his symptoms were....

Stiff neck
Aches all over
Serious dislike of light - he had curtains drawn & a pillow over his face & he couldn't open his eyes because of the light sensitivity
Mega Headache
Flu like symptoms
High Temperature

When in doubt, give the doc a shout.

Just to say, my hubby is now suffering with the same symptoms as yours, shivvers etc, can't get warm, but it lasted about 2 days & now he's just snotty & grumpy !

I hope it is only man flu hun:hug:

could be either hun, as Bev said sypmtoms are similar for both, so if he dosent improve soon id take her advice and ring NHS direct, they will talk you through the symptoms and what to do next etc

fingers crossed its just man flu though hun, mind you grrrrr if he's anything like my hubby when ill, god bless ya lol

:hug::hug::hug:

thanks Bev, will keep an eye on him.

I had that flu...i ached was hot and cold snotty nose cough....shakes yet i was normal temp......its blinking horrible Ann......but if he gets worse then call nhs or your emergency docs ........hope he feels better soon huni xxxxxxxxxx:hug:

I wouldn't say it was meningitis hun by the symptoms you say he has (but I cannot see him myself obviously) but if you are at all worried your local emergencey department will be able to put your mind at rest - the streaming nurse (triage nurse) will be your first port of call and would probably ease your worries.

Just dont take any chances and get the doc out

I remember dr Hilary saying another symptom often missed is very cold hands and feet.

Hubby just had a week off work with the same symptoms

headache
sickness
stiff neck
shaking
aching
temperature

Doc said viral flu thats going round

Hes back at work now but still feels off it to his normal self

Yep, I wouldnt take any chances either Ann, call the Doc to get them to come out and see him! Do it sooner rather than later, cos they will probably take ages on Good Friday!

Hope he gets better soon xxxx

Get it checked out hun - my husband also had the same 3 years ago, but also had severe photosensitivity (to light!) and he did have Meninigitis. Unfortunately for us we had some idiot of a doctor (military!) who refused to even test for Meningitis and at one point called me a 'silly girl' for even thinking it.

I finally flipped when graeme lost consciousness and got him transferred to the NHS, who disagnosed - Meningitis within 4 hours. He was then kept in isolation and on medication for 2 weeks, but may not have been so bad if it was picked up earlier!

I'm sure he's fine - photosensitivity quite a is a key factor - but just don't take the risk...get him looked over!

thanks everyone, we have discussed his symptoms and he seems happy to put it down to viral flu.

He's snored his head off for past hour and now agreed to go back to bed.

Will read the link provided (thanks very much) and have got NHS helpline number at hand. One of Jack's friends mams is a triage nurse, so can always give her a ring too.

Supposed to be going out tonight but will have to see how he gets on. I know last week when I had man-flu I really resented the fact that my hub still went out as it was such an effort to even let the dog out into the garden.

I totally agree I was rished into hospital in January of this year with Viral Meningitius which has NO rash not good still not right.

hub has got up and had a bath. He's basically slept since Thursday night, with small bouts of walking around like a zombie.

He is slowly recovering, his temperature is stabilising, his neck still hurts (thats what really got me worried), and he is still achy, headachy and sneezy (sounds like 7 dwarves).

Think it is this horrible flu thats going around.

thanks for all your help, reassurance and guidance, you really, really helped. and the link that Bev Rose sent was brilliant. thanks.

My pleasure hun, I'm pleased he's starting to come round & feel a little better.
