Hello everyone. After doing beauty for a few years(which I still do) I decided that I would really like to train in hairdressing so a couple of years ago I did my level 2 in hairdressing, after completing the course I realised I didn't have enough knowledge or expericence to go it alone so tried to find some work in a salon with no luck as i didn't have any expericence, so I have decided last year to do my level 3, but I am realising there is so much to learn and I know you never stop learning in hairdressing but at the age of 38 am wondering if I have just left it to late, and am I going to have the same problem after level 3 with doing mobile or salon work. would love to hear any advice or other peoples experiences please.

I don't think youve left it too late, if that's what you want to do go for it x

Hi Choc Choc

I often read posts on here from people who ask the question about it being too late for them to get anywhere with hairdressing or if they are too old and in a way it makes me quite sad

There is no law that states hairdressing is for young, trendy, individuals it dosn't say anywhere you need to be a female or a male or belong to mensa . Hairdressing is a vocation for people who enjoy hair dressing .. and thats it really .

I understand only too well from personal experience that there is a cycle that says we need experience and yet if you cannot get any then how do you break it ? Also as with many things in life there is a lot to learn God knows I've been a mum for 22 years and never stop learning and thus is life its how it should be.. if we knew it all we'd just give up wanting to know new things.

But I think you probably know more than you think you do -be proud of what you have achieved and know that these certificates are your investment , of your time, finance and blood sweat and probably tears to get them . If i'd have listened to everyone who said' how old ' and you wanna do hairdressing ! I'd have given up at the first hurdle .

I have met people who specialise in one thing they are best at . One lady just did shampoo and sets yes she did ! and made a good living out of it . Another just hi lights . Why not build on the things you know you are really good at and confident in and then progress from there . Why not advertise for models like some other geeks do check out the ideas on the biz forum and build up your confidence .

38 is not too old its just your mind playing tricks with you ..

Hairdressing is a huge industry with room for everyone. Trendy young things tend to be a pain to employ!! I employ all age groups from teenagers to forty somethings.

One observation tho, I have encountered people coming to the industry late who seem to think they have to be "know it alls" to get on. There will be people younger who know more.

I came into hairdressing at age 25 and think age is actually a slight advantage as we know what we want and can be very focused to acheive it. That said you do imo have a harder job than a "younger" person as they have normally slotted into a salon straight from school or college. Are you doing level 3 whilst on a placement in a salon or full time at college? as I think that makes a huge difference. If you are in college I would say you need to be part time in a salon to get you the experience you need. Level 3 is meant to be advanced hairdressing and should only be available to stylists that are in a salon imo as you need that hands on work. The bottom line is its all there for you if you are focused and determined, but you might have to give up lots of your time to get the experience you need.

Just saw your post as a nail technician and beauty therapist I usually post in the nail section, but I felt I had to comment. You are def not too old, no one is ever too old to learn anything. I have just finished a beauty course and there were people just starting out who were much older than 38. Go for it! It's never ever too late!

hii, GO FOR IT!!! i've been hairdressing since i was 16(i'm now 36) & i remember when i first started at college there were women in their 40s just starting out who went on to be very successful. there was even a lady who had just turned 60 & was very proud to be following her dream so you are definately not too old at all!!!x:hug:

Hi, I am currently training as a hairdresser and I am 38 lol, I put it off for ages thinking the same thing, but I am so glad I done it because I want to do something i enjoy and be able to never look back and regret not doing it.

Good Luck for the future x

Thank you everyone , just what I wanted to hear, will keep you all posted

Hi ive just finished my level2 hairdressing at the young age of 43 loved every minute of it,your never to old to learn.

never too old! theres two ladies in their mid 40s in my class. one of them has her level 3 in beauty already and the other is just doing it cos she has free time now her kids are over 16.

Hi i wish id done it 20 years ago as I'm loving it so much but I'm just finishing level 2 now and I'm 35, and I'm in the middle of the age range of my group, one of my gorgeous colleagues is 50 in summer, so it really is never too late to get into the right industry that will make you happy.
X

theres no thing as leaving it too late hun if you want to do it you go for it! wishing you all the best in whatever you decide

x

Our lady who has just finished her training in our salon is 31 and I tell you she is a breath of fresh air compared to some of the young trainees, she booked herself of lots of cutting/hair up courses and is doing brilliantly and alot of clients prefer her due to her age. Your never to late. Go for it! Its a bit like a driving test, once you've passed there way you can then put your own spin on your work and do it your way!

:)

your constantly learning in hairdressing! go for it and dont be put out!

Hi i have just been reading all of the comments and how inspiring, i am a fully qualified beauty therapist and have been in the industry for 10years, i am completely self employed and have my own mobile beauty business, i am also looking into doing hairdressing now aswell, as it has always been something i have wanted to do, but have not really wanted to go to my local college to train as i know a lot of the 'youngsters' around that are doing hair and i know that a lot of them aren't that bothered about their training, i know it sounds a bit judgemental but i didn't want to be distracted by time wasters when there are people that have paid to be there and want to learn. I know that having said that it is also a good thing to have a mix of different ages as not everyone is the same, im not sure whether to start with just a hair up course to tie in with my bridal treatments or just go for it? I will have to work alongside of my training to support it, im not sure if anyone knows of any training courses or even any financial help i may qualify for? i am based in the Kent area.
Can anyone help or advise me please??

I was made redundant two years ago from a job in the financial sector. A job I was in for 11 years - hated every minute of it. As the job situation was then and still is dire, I decided to train in Hairdressing (which I have always wanted to do! Got talked out of it by a careers advisor when I left school). I took a fast track evening course in basic cutting, just to see if I could pick up the basic skills and to see if I had a passion for the industry. I passed the course, eah assessment on the first try! My lecturer then suggested I apply for full time, SVQ Level 2.
I am soooooooooo glad I did this. I cannot wait to build on my limited knowledge and become a fully fledged hairdresser. I actually have my college induction this morning and I cant wait!! My confidence has improved and for the first time in ages I truly believe I can accomplish anything. By the way I am 42 years young!! Go for it!!

i would love to learn to be a colourist, to try this and try that, but then i love what i do now and wouldnt change it for anything and there is only so many hours in the day
wish days were longer !

completely agree 24hrs just aren't enough, the only barrier i keep coming across is there doesn't seem to be an awful lot of help for more mature students it does all seem to be aimed at school leavers - anyone else found this??
