I did a Lava Shell back massage today, & straight after & for a few hours my client had a really bad headache, I have heard of this before but not had clients mention this has happened to them. She loved the massage & said she was deeply relaxed, she didnt complain about having the headache as she put it "the massage obviously did something" but what??
Am I right in thinking this is a release of toxins or not?Dehydration? If not can anyone please explain excatly what causes headaches after massages? Is it a good thing?

Thank you so much in advance for any answers

I dont know loads about massage but as far as I know it's a release of toxins, it happens to me after I get massages and with reflexology I got a really bad one!

There are many reasons as to why we get headaches and to go through them all would be like counting stripes in a zebra.

Some of the questions I'd be asking would be along the lines of the following:

Did you client drink water before and/or after her massage? :wink2:
Does she have any health issues - ie. hypo or hypertension, diabetes?
Has your client had this type of massage before?
Does she have any injuries, be they existing or old?
Has she been ill lately or feel a bit off prior to massage?
Was the massage deep?
Was it equal - ie did you cover all areas or concentrate on a few?

headaches, nausea, dizziness etc are all contra-actions in massage

Headaches and dizziness are contra-actions.
Yes release of toxins, dehydratin, also th energy, itss possoble you picked up on each others energy, probably why you both got a headache.:)

Totally agree with this, this is why we always should offer a glass of water after a massage and encourage the drinking of fluids as part of our aftercare.
I add a slice of lemon to the water, just a nice touch and a detoxifier hth Emma x

also, if you are introducing heat like lava shells or hot stones, then the body is constantly fighting to maintain normal temperature so the combination of toxin release and dehydration and this can easily lead to a headache.

Perhaps check with your trainers if this happens regularly with the first treatment.

Next time try ending with a massage on the scalp and forehead as well, remove any oil from hands if necessary.I think sometimes just releasing the back and not working into the scalp kind of upsets things. The muscles are after all interconnected.

Was it equal - ie did you cover all areas or concentrate on a few? Fairly equal but did concentrate more on the neck & shoulder areas

I didnt get the headache just the client, but glad it has been confirmed that it was through the release of toxins & dehydration that caused the headache.

Thank you all for your replies, really appreciated x:hug:x

i have one thing say a glass of water !!!!

I'm on Aromatherapy course and i always get a bad headache. Either whilst i give a massage or when i receive one.
The teacher said she did not know why.

I always offer each client a bottole of Evian at the end of a treatment, they can either drink it then or take it away with them.
