My 18 month daughter seems to have a growth problem with her big toe nail.
I have tried to take photo's but thats easier said than done. So i will try to explain as best i can.
Her big toenail seems to be growing in sections. A smile line will appear just above the cuticle area, the smile line is not a natural smile line, the line is like it as been slightly cut in with a scapel. The nail then grows and as it gets to about two thirds up the nail plate it starts to lift a bit more each day, when it comes off there is not much of a nail underneath, so it looks like the nail has been cut too short. But as this happens a new smile line will appear at the cuticle as before, as though the smile line is produced by cutting into the nail slightly. This is present on both her big toenails but no other nail. It seems to be growing in sections and not continous.
Does anyone know what this is as i have searched and cant find a condition like this the only thing that is kind of simalar is onycholysis. But it isn't like this her nails do not look deformed in any way. Thanks to anyone who can shed some light on this.

I'm afraid I can't offer any advice other than to suggest you take her to see the doctor.

I have this problem with one of my big toenails. It seemed to start after I whacked my toe on something and knocked a big chunk out of it. I can only assume that it has been caused by damage to the growth area of the nail. So it made me think that maybe you should get your daughter's shoe fitting checked, as it could be caused by her toes bumping into the ends of her shoes if they don't fit properly. Just a thought.

ask your health visitor to have a quick look at it down at the baby clinic - saves making an appt with the GP and hopefully wont be necessary

xxxxxxxxxx

Thanks for your replys.

I am waiting for an appointment with a orthapeadic doctor as she is not walking yet, which would also cancel out the shoe theory. She has under developed muscles in her legs and she is a bum shuffler. But i was too and i was a late walker so not concerned at this point. I initially put it down to damage to her matrix area but this problem has been present for a while now. I thought it had stopped but it hasn't. This is about the fourth section to grow on her right big toe and the third on her left big toe. Was gonna wait to see specialist and discuss it with him, but im still waiting for appt........., So i wil take her to health visitor. Thanks for your advice much appreciated. xx

Hopefully the doctors will get to the bottom of whats causing it! Let us know how you get on.

Health visitor on hols so they are short staffed. Receptionist said discuss it when i see consultant about her legs.!
Only problem is still waiting for appt................

So if anyone who has not read this thread yet and has any ideas what is happening with my daughters toenails, please let me know. As its getting kind of frustrating now. Really can not think what it could be.

Thanks again. xx

Push for the appointment as soon as you can... if you know who the consultant is then get in touch with their secretary directly and try to get the appointment made.
All the best  x

I phoned on monday, and left message saying that i wanted someone to contact me straight away to let me know what was happening with the appt. Needless to say , i am still waiting for them to ring back. By the time they do, i bet she will be walking, running and doing cartwheels......:).

If I were you then I would be ringing every hour or so to contact them... keep on calling them!

Yes agree, maybe if i harass them enough they will give appt just to shut me up.:wink2:

Thanx Valenciannails. let you know how i get on. xx

Please do keep us updated, it will be interesting to find out what's causing the problem.
Best of luck with it  x

I have a 15 month old daughter with exactly the same thing, it's nothing to worry about, both my other daughters had it and it just grows out by itself. :hug:Honestly, i wouldn't upset yourself, but a trip to the health visitor if you're really worried will put your mind at rest.

How long did the condition last for? as my daughter has had this for about 10-12 months. It keeps growing like this. I have just checked her nails this morning and its starting again on both toes, you can see the cut into the nail. Health visitor did not have a clue and told me discuss it with the orthapeadic consultant WHEN i get appt.....yes i am still waiting. I have contacted them 4 times in 3 days. You dont get to talk to anyone, you have to leave a message, needless to say my messages are getting more and more sharp. still no reply from them. Thanks Stoney for advice, would be greatful if you could let me know how long it lasted for and did you find out what caused it. Thanks  xx

Pal of mine at college had pinky toenails that looked like tiny beaks, really she did. It was genetic her gran had the same thing.

I hope you get an answer from the docs.

Just had a thought, how about a visit to a qualified chiropodist:?:

You would have to pay about £10 but it would put your mind at rest and at least you could see someone quickly.

Good luck.

was thinking the same thing. She does not seem to be bothered by it, and as i have said the nail isn't deformed in any way, just growing in sections. I had thought it had to do with her bones etc. As she has only just started bearing her own weight on her feet, and has the smallest feet and ankles ever! Also her teeth came through : fangs first then top then back now i am waiting for the front bottom. As you know teeth, bones and nails are made from similar materials. Thats why i thought it best to speak to the orthapeadic consultant to do with her legs but still WAITING.................sorry for rant but this appt thing is driving me mad. Maybe i'm wrong but there has been a slight unusual growth in all three areas. Does any one else have a thought on this theory or am i clutching at straws?
Its more baffling than upsetting and as i said it doesnt effect her in the slightest.

My baby, Albany, has had it since she was born and so did my other daughters, i never asked anyone about it because i wasn't concerned. That probably sounds awful but i just kept an eye on it and eventually it just grew out when the nails became stronger. I bet her fingernails are really tiny and prone to splitting too yeh? The protein connection is probably right though, cause my girls were practically bald till they were all two, and got teeth really late!!!

I really don't think its a condition as such, you just need to give their little bodies time to adjust to this big bad outside world, there is alot of moisture in that womb!! lol

I also don't think its connected to the fact that she's walking late, all babies are different and do things at different ages, my baby is 15 months old, still in 9-12 months clothes and still hasn't said mum!! (much to my disgust).

Please try not to worry, that's the only advice i would STRONGLY give. I'm not a professional, can only tell you from experience and i hope i've helped.

Hi
My youngest daughter has the same problem, she has had it since being a baby and is now 13 years old. After many trips to gp, hospital, chiropodist I found out that she now has a double matrix. Hope this helps

WOW! Really. Did not even think of that. Thanks, maybe it is the same thing.

Thanks for advise Stoney. Like you im not worried about the walking thing but in this crazy world they like to prod and poke. I took daughter to G.P. for a cold she then made a big todo about nothing over the fact she is a late walker. I myself was a late walker and i can swing my hips and legs like a gooden , well after a few drinks :). So i know she will get there when she is ready, children are not text book cases, but lately it seems to be that if they don't do it when the book says they should, then somethings wrong.
Thanks for all your replies, hopefully the mystery is solved! Now to get back to getting that APPT............. god i could cry, cant stand no more automated robot voices telling me to leave a message. Sorry for rant.

Thanks again. XXXXX
