Sorry to be a bit thick but will someone please explain L&P and NNO as I didn't come across these abbrev's in my training - i don't think!

Also will someone please confirm or deny whether acylic or gel thins the natural nail please. My trainer said it didn't, and it was just increased water in the nail when you removed them that made them soft. However a client that i applied acylic tips to has decided to take tyhem off and 3 weeks later is still finding the nails are so thin and weak she is having to file them down constantly or they peel off.

i suggested she just have acylic or gel overlays but if this will again thin the nail will she end up in the same position. I feel I am giving her poor advice even though it's what i was told when i trained.

Would i be better just advising weekly manicure and strengthening treatment- opi nail envy i know is good ANY HELP PLEASE!

i was puzzled with the same thing but for sure l&p means Liquid and Powder and i think NNO means natural nail overlay i think:rolleyes:

Thanks it's so obvious when someone tells you LOL! x

No it doesn't.
The natural nail should be the same when enhancements are removed as they are when enhancements are applied, providing the technician hasn't over filed the natural nail!

The nails tend to feel weak when enhancements are removed as they no longer have the protection on them that overlays provide. Using a nourishing oil such as Solar Oil will help a lot, as will using a cross linking base coat such as CND's Toughen Up.

Are you sure you weren't a bit over zealous when you were filing/buffing?

If the client's nails aren't in good condition when enhancements are applied then you will find them exactly the same when they're removed, however, if the thinness of her nails are due to over filing then you need to improve your filing techniques.

Here's a link to the abbreviations used on the site - http://www.salongeek.com/misc-articles/35663-message-board-lingo.html

Hi,
thanks for your reply.
I was really careful when i filed as during training my own nail was overfiled to the point of being painful!
her nails weren't long when i applied the tips first so you could be right about them recerting to type and she's probably so used to the thickness/strength of the tips that natural nails now "feel" thinner.
Thanks for the advice

Also if she removed them herself she may have inadvertantly caused some damage which could result in the peeling etc. x

Doug Schoon has a tidbit of info shared about this- that when you remove a set of enhancements, the MOISTURE content, not the water content, is higher in your natural nail plate than normal- this means your natural emollients. It's very important to apply Solar Oil at that time to help the nail plate normalize- it takes no longer than a week if the nails themselves weren't damaged with a heavy hand and a gritty file ;)

And let's not forget the damage the client can do by prying and picking the enhancements off herself! That would definitely cause peeling and thinness.

I have been wearing enhancements for years, and I def dont over file as most of the time I use calgel which you dont need to file hardly at all, I had to take mine off to do an EZFlow conversion and I know for sure my nails are not the same, surely if your nails are protected constantly your nails will thin as they are not out in the elements etc, I'm sure if you were to wear a waterproof hat for 5 years your hair would suffer ? I know the nail system and the folicle system are different but it still involves the same keratin ? I cant see that my nails would be stronger until the old, pre enhanced nail has completely grown out.

I know there has been alot of threads about this and the overall Consensus is that thining of the nail plate is from overfiling, ( apart from illness, damage to the matrix etc) but I'm just not sure !?

*********This is not to provoke a row with anyone I'm just really interested ! x ************

Hi Lilly--be assured that wearing an acrylic or gel enhancement does NOT cause your nails to be thin. As mentioned above, when you remove them after wearing them for awhile, they may feel flexible and thin, but this is due to the higher moisture content in the nail plate--when there's a coating over the top, the natural moisture in the nail plate can't dissapate normally. Also, once the acrylic or gel has been cured, it is an inert, hard coating. It does not dissolve or otherwise "eat away" at the keratin in the nail plate. It really is down to how the nail plate is treated before applying product.

If you still need more reassurance, get Doug Schoon's book Nail Structure and Product Chemistry. It is a MUST for every nail professional! This man is a nail genius! :D
