If anyone knows what could be causing this or what I could to fix these problems please let me know. I've tried everything... Vinylux, Shellac, gluing the splits, letting them breathe, nail tek... She tried biotin, takes a multivitamin and just started taking vitamin E. They just seem to be getting worse. She comes to me once a week for shaping and vinylux because when they are left bare they split more. I sent her home this week bare because they looked like this...

And this was after I clipped and filed down all the splits... My gut told me not to put any product on them because they are being over exposed.
I'm desperate for answers; as is she.

Thanks in advance.

Hi, just as a disclaimer, I don't specialise in nails so maybe an experienced nail tech could tell you more, however I thought I'd give you my thoughts anyway as I do still provide this service. lol.

Have you/her looked into her life style for answers? Maybe a bad diet, medication etc. I 'believe' taking a multivitamin or supplement only really helps if you are leading a healthy life style already.

Does she work with her hands and protect them? Obvious but even the most simplistic things can be missed.

Have you recommended a good cuticle oil for her to use at home, or even going to the GP for some answers.

I don't know If that was any help at all but there's probably so many factors into it, like age too. Maybe it cannot be fixed by a nail professional.

I have a client with nails like these! She has lots of medical issues including thyroid problems and is also allergic to lots of plastics and glue which make her fingers split. She has previously had acrylic extensions at her doctors recommendation however they eventually split her nails ( this was done via a previous tech). We trialled IBX on its launch and painted with Vinylux which she was really pleased with and have subsequently applied every three weeks since. While they are still not perfect (very ridgy in places) there is a massive improvement. The Vinylux lasts her about a week and she is able to keep polish on now in between visits.

Ooh I forgot to say she uses Solar oil daily in conjunction with the above

Yeah I was gonna say... Lifestyle choices diet/smoking/medications/health etc could be a big player in that. How is her hair? If its also quite thin and limp or general bad condition that may be a sign its more her than the products anyway

I've heard amazing things about IBX... I might have to try that!

She works with her hands a lot but she promises she wears gloves. And when asked about diet she admitted to not eating healthy but made it clear that she wasn't planning on changing that. *sigh*. She's adamant on me finding a product to fix them

Thank y'all for your responses!

I would say IBX and solar oil.....I've had great success on clients using IBX:cool:

It looks like dehydration and bruising to me. I recommend nail envy to my clients when they come in with their nails like that. Using nail envy on a regular basis should help. Also try an avoplex pen. That helps too. If neither works after 3 weeks, it could be something internal for that client. Have her check w/ her doctor if they get any worse.
