I qualified as a nail Tech this year and i have passed my calgel assesment a couple of weeks ago. I really want to slowly build up my own business while holding down my exsisting full time job. Can anyone give me pros and cons from working mobile or from home from their own experiences?

Thank you:lol:

The good thing about working from home is no overheads! Bad thing with still keeping your job and doing this on the side is any potential client will have to work around you. So you may only be able to work nights, and alot of mums may not be able to do it then. Tea, baths, bedtimes, partners working late etc. I work 3 days a week in a salon renting a room. I get the mums in during the day when kids are at school, the professionals in late at night after they finish work, and the full time workers in at weekends when they are off!

Working mobile was a pain for me! It was good to build up my client base as I was flexible and could do anyday at anytime. But the travelling wasnt good, sometimes I would be away for 2hours just to do a spray tan by the time I took into account getting to the clients house and home again.

If you are wanting to commit to this I would rethink keeping your full time job. Can you do it part time?

The problem I have at the moment is I have no client base at all and I need to get a few under my belt before I can give up my full time work and commit to this. I had thought about getting a part time job and devoting the rest of my time to my business.

I had thought about the travel that this will potentially eat in to my treatment time and effect the money i make but at the same time i want to be as flexiable as possible.

You have certainly given me something to think about, thank you for your advice:)

ive done mobile for a while but only so i can base it around my job, but i dont like it so im gunna do it from home and still see if i can work round my other job, the best way of you getting clients is by promotion so your probably better of doing some flyers with your prices on etc and put them everywhere,
i did mine on vistaprint and there actually really cheap,
give it a go and see how many contact you, you could always start mobile but as you pick your clients up then work from home :) x

The only potential downfall with that is clients that want a mobile service wont necessarily swap to a home salon..... I'm full-time mobile and most of my clients sought me out because I am mobile.

I was mobile for 10 years and was astounded when I changed to working from home. I only lost one client! I think it is different if you haven't been established for long but I wouldn't let this put anyone off.

There are more people who would have you mobile but it takes longer per treatment because of travel and set up time and you are not in control of what the client is up to at home, answering the telephone, husband, children etc.

I think if you can only work evenings and weekends I would start from home as the clients you get are more likely to want to come to you. During the day mums can't get away from the house and a lot of them welcome the reason to escape from the kids to be pampered once a fortnight! :green:

I was mobile then went to a salon and I was going to lose a few clients as they dont drive and would of been awkward to get to the salon from where they stay so I still go to their houses as they were really good clients who got their rebalances and spray tans every 2 weeks so was alot of money to lose out on. I think it just depends on the person really, but alot chose a mobile therapist as it works for them. Most who chose it probably have a busy life and the thought of being able to stay in the house and still get their nails/tan/eyelashes done etc is bliss to them!

i am new to the industry and was thinking about starting mobile and doing the elderly or infirm who cannot readily get out of the house. what exactly is involved with being mobile? i am aware of travel and set up time but have little idea how to do marketing and what kind of setup i would need.

I'm currently in the middle of setting up a little nails and beauty business from home, have put out business cards and flyers and have had enough interest to boost my confidence to go and do it, I think it's mostly personal preference as to whether clients want mobile tech, home or salon based, few people have said they love the 'cosy personal service' you get with working at home, but afew have said they would rather go to a salon, although I've had nobody say they would prefer me to go to them, mostly due to smell etc I think!

Could you offer both? Maybe try to encourage the home based salon and if a client really doesn't want that you could offer them mobile?

i do both mobile and home. i actually get more wanting to come to me as to get away from the daily chores!¬ i do mobile spray tans and minx partys but lash extensions massage ect... mostly home x as my pose on biz.... im trying to decide whether full time beauty and give up my 9-5 guaranteed money job !!!

I'm mobile and at home too. Some people love to come here and others like me to go to there house so I couldn't really tell you which one is best as peoples preferences are so different. Is there a way you could set up a small room in your house? if so i'd do that but also give clients the option of you going to them :)

Hi Pam, I think that there is a need for both, it really is what suits you. I am mobile and find that my clients are those who have young kids not at school yet who are in bed by 7 and older ladies who don't want to visit a salon as they find it intimadating as well as those who just like the idea of being at home. I only work at nights and the weekends by request as this is what suits me as I have two small children and with childcare costs wouldn't make any money during the day! I also do pamper parties and they are great cos its an excuse for girly night and something different. If you are going to work full time and do nails at night try not to both for too long as it will be a really long day. Hope it all works out for you.

Annie x
