Im having several dilemas with Nails at the moment and the main one being that during 2003 I trained locally as a Nail Tech and have been having problems mastering the technique of P&L and therefore have not offered this as a service yet. I want to attend another P&L course but dont want to really attend a course which covers the whole basics of nails again but concentrates on the product application. I have heard that other companies can be easier to use and master.

I live in Norwich and training seems to be on the short side unless you can travel a distance. I am a mother and currently work part time and have difficulty in arranging babysitters for during the day.

I have been advised that there is an Odyssey 1 day course coming up in P&L or a 2 day SalonSystems P&L and Gel course.

I would really appreciate any advise on either of these systems as I havent been able to find out much about them. I currently have been using Star Nail Products.

Thank you

Hi,

I'm in the same position as you, mother of three, have to pay a childminder when I work or train. I live in Suffolk and the few training centres are in Norwich or further afield.

Have you contacted Capital in Norwich. I know they offer training for IBD gel system, not sure if they offer training for other systems. Maybe you could have one-to one training where they come to you. Sorry I can't be of any help but if you find anyway, let us know. :)

CREATIVE!!!!!!!

The reason I recommend this is because they are genuinely fantastic and the training is amazing. They do follow up training and give you advice and support whenever you need it.

When I started out I did some research as to which training to take. I called lots of techs who had turned to Creative, and even got advice from Techs who weren't Creative but recommended it as the best. This was enough for me and so I went with them. I have never regretted one minute of it!

(Unfortunatley the only thing they couldn't do for me was teach me how to spell!  )

I'm not just saying this because it is my *favouritist ever! But because they really are good, and your confidence to provide this as a service will improve greatly.

*new word I invented

Hope this helps. :D

I have had the same problem, i live about an hour away from Norwich and havent yet done any training in Nails.. Its taken me ages to decide which company to use because of the same problem, there being no local training centres which means id have to travel, so ive had to think out the costs for the course and to travel and even if id need accomodation! I decided to go with NSI on a one-2-one at my house.

Its at the end of next week so im really looking forward to it, just hope i've made a good choice and i learn all i need to know!.

Thanks for your reply. Ive called Capital and if I was to decide to go with them I would be better paying for the whole 4 day Foundation Course as they wont do a L&P converstion until you have been practising for a year. Dont mind but its going to cover all the basics which I already know so only about
1day is going to be much use.

Waiting for further details from them.

Like the new invented word though - keep up the good spelling

Hi Nicola,

Hope you don't mind me asking but were NSI very expensive and are you doing the foundation course. How many days do they come to you and over what period? I'm also looking into one-2-one at my house. I've phoned Creative to enquire about the dates for the Norwich centre and was informed that they are not holding any there at the present. If I wanted to continue down the Creative route I would have to travel to Essex.

Good luck next week.

Regards
Louise

Hi there,

Have a good look around first before you decide which company to do your course with:?: Look at the trainers and their experience, as it is the trainers that are teaching you not the products...give Salon Solutions a ring and ask to speak to tracey stephenson......she is non product linked and has many years of experience and will give you loads of info.....she has a centre in Nottingham (don't know if that's near you) her number is 01484 227775
Good luck with everything

I may be being a bit controversial here but sometimes it does concern me as to exactly WHY people disrespect product based training???
Until a few years ago, there was NO other training other than product linked training and certain companies gave their education to the powers that be in order to write the criteria for the NVQ etc.
There is absolutely nothing sinister about product linked training and people who take that training have now and always have had the right to purchase products elsewhere after that training should they wish to.
I would rather be trained by a specialist with a product that they know inside and out than by someone who does not represent any brand at all and is teaching me with some product that is generic when I could be learning with more sophisticated high end products that are easier to learn with. GENERIC products are not cutting edge.
The fact that someone is not product linked does not make them better advisors necessarily either altho I am sure the lady you mention is most reputable.
My advice would be to look at the reputation of the companyand their reputation as educators. What do the top people in the industry use and who did they learn with?? I like people who are a bit biased ... it shows they have passion ... and people do not get passionate about crummy products and training.

I didnot say that I disrespect product training I was stating that if the origional thread starter wanted any help and advise to speak to the lady in question as I found her to be an excellent educator and has given me alot of advise and encouragement and is always there at the other end of the phone if i have any queries.

I am always confused when we see articles in magazines etc about independent educators - not being associated with a product line - how can this be - they have to use something.

What are generic products? They have to be a brand or are they mass produced with someones own brand name.

It would be a lot easier for technicians to know what the generic brand was - this would stop any confusion when they go out into the world of purchasing products - if the trainer is using a brand called for example Salon Solutions and the techs dont really like it when they have finished - if they go out and go to say Cosmic will they know whether it is any different as I think Cosmic is only a brand name rather than a manufacturer.

It would be really good if we knew who made products for who - as in "Kelloggs don't make cornflakes for anyone else" LOL

I hope this makes sense without upsetting anyone.

Hi Louise,

At first I thought that NSI was expensive but after i spoke with alot of other companies about the costs of kits, extra products,my travel xpenses/accomodation if needed and then the actual course fees, i think its a gud price. Obviously im not gona have to travel and im going to get 100% of the training!

The lady i spoke to was so helpful and friendly, im sure im gona learn all i need to know (being a total beginner)!

She comes for 2 days then leaves it roughly 2 weeks then comes for a final day, i get the kit, training hand, video and the 3 days training for just over £500.

Do you think it sounds ok??

There are only a handful of true manufactureres of nail products. And I'm sure they will tell you who they are!!
One clue is if products are patented technology (really patented not just someone saying they are). Patented products are different to the run of the mill, middle of the road 'generic' products.
Some have taken a generic product and branded it through good marketing but the product is stil 'generic', meaning it probably is just the same as someone elses product that is not so well branded!!
One thing is for sure, no company is going to tell you their manufacturing source unless they manufacture themselves ... by the way ... 'Creative only make for Creative' and ARE true manufacturers with their own R&D and labaratories ... in case you were going to ask.

Hiya
Think it sounds like a good price but depends on the training you receive at the end of the day.

Would be really interested in finding out how it goes for you - keep me posted as it could be an option for me.

Thanks

Hi,

Ive had training with Creative, Ezflow,NSI, AND LCN. I think all hav benifited me in many ways and would recommend all of them!

I am just finishing my NVQ unit 19 at the moment. I had already done a course in 3 systems about a year before. I paid about £470 I think for tuition and the assesments which I thought was good. On the leaflet, it stated that it was a 14 week course, but it turned out that we only had 4 weeks tuition and the rest of it was just assesments. We booked them when we felt ready. I'm not quite sure about this? Thinking back, I knew how to do everything already, so could have just booked for assesments! (Wanted to brush up a bit tho).
I still have my sculpturing assesment to go and I must admit, I'm not that confident. As the NVQ place is quite a way away from me,it's hard to get there a lot. I found NSI only a few miles away. I have arrange a couple of hours one to one. They are fantastic! The guys there were really nice and I didn't even realise they existed near me!

I forgot to say, that payment did not include the kit. I think the whole kit cost arount £150.
When we have models in for assesment, they (or us) have to pay the salon... Even though we are using our own products.
Is every NVQ place the same in that respect?
Can anyone tell me?
