i recently did a gel overlay on natural nails for a client. she came in a few days ago and the gels were all chipped and cracked. i did them about 3 weeks ago but i dont understand what happened. i followed all the steps. i am somewhat new at this so i dont know if maybe i missed something or i didnt make the gel thick enough. also i thought i might have used a sculpting gel instead of the overlay one. unless that doesnt matter. can any one please help!! much appreciation.

Hun one thing you will learn is that every one gets on with their nails differently. Some can go 6 weeks without any problems at all (just very grown out) and other people you think they must have been coal mining with their bare hands after a week they are in such a state.

Now the cracking and stuff may be down to you, but after 3 weeks I would reckon that the client had her play in what happened too. You may have to make it a little thicker for her as she sounds heavy handed. Just make sure that you tell you her you've done your part in making beautiful nails, now she has to play her part by looking after them. They're jewels not tools and whilst they are strong they're not infallible and can break.

Make sure you are using the right lamp for the IBD gel and that your bulbs are replaced regularly - they may still burn bright but the UV loses its efficiency over time and then you get undercure and breakdown of the product.

Gell is notorious for chipping off the free edge of natural nail overlays unless you do certiain things!!

Yes you must make sure the product is thick enough on the free edge and second that the free edge is capped with the gel.
