Hi,i'm new to nails and joined a course. I'm having a lot of trouble learning the nail disorders like onychomycosis and so on. Any tips would be most helpful. Also at the end of the course i will do a 60 minute multiple choice exam. Is there any place online that i can find example test questions.

Many thanks.

Google it. Search nail diseases/disorders there is allot on the internet about it.

As for test questions ... learn what you need to learn and you will be able to answer them all.

It's the actual learning of the words. I have the hand out of the disorders but can't seem to memorize the actual words. It's really driving me batty.
Who on earth came up with the words onychocryptosis and onychorrhixes.
Why can you not just say ingrown nail and nail fragility. I can't even spell them never mind pronounce them :(

The GREEKS actually ... Ony cho (pronounced on - ee - ko) is the word for nail which is why it preceeds all of the disorders etc. So that bit is easy the rest is just a matter of memorisation. Silly really as we as technicians are not allowed to diagnose these diseases. Usually the only disorders we see are onycholysis (nail spearation from the nail bed) and onychophagia (nail biting) most of the rest you will never come across and if you do you can't diagnose ... so all a bit of a waste of time IMO for a nail technician.

Thanks . God help me if it comes up in the exam.

know how you feel... I think we've all had this problem when we started out and one day it will all just click (I promise)

I had to have little tricks to remember though, so say for example if you look at the word, like Onychogryptosis for example... I would try to remember this by taking the gryp part of the word and would imagine the nail was gripping the skin (like an ingrown nail would)

It's sounds really silly when I'm trying to explain it.:green:

To remember Onychophagia I would think of a nervous person biting their nails and smoking loads of **** (phag)... do you get what I mean??

I've loads more but I hope you get my drift...

Just wondering who you are doing your course with?

Did they tell you which ones you had to learn or do you have to learn all of them?

It will be much easier when the question is multiple choice though and you need to just relax a little bit and don't panic:hug:

Its the institute of nail tech dublin. Yup,have to learn all the types disorders. Contra indication and contra action.

I know what you mean about pronouncing the names, I could do with seeing a phonic way ( like geeg did ) of the name I'm sure it would be easier way to remember them !

Oh thank you. This is really a huge help.
