Hi guys

Ive been asked if i can do some henna tatoo as a number of fairs and wondered if you can buy this stuff? and if so do you need to do a course to be able to offer it or can you just get on and do it?

I've used Henna Boy in the past, Henna Boy Ltd - Natural Henna For Hair, Indigo, Amla, Cassia Obovata and more... - and they've been good - the main thing to be aware of is that you need to make sure that what you are buying is natural henna, and is not adulterated with synthetic dyes such as para-phenylenediamine (PPD) - as PPD can cause severe allergic reactions, chemical burns and skin sensitization - there have been reports of people suffering severe allergic reactions and burns when getting "black henna" tattoos from unscrupulous artists - many of which were done when abroad on holiday - there's normally a delay of a few days before the allergic reaction takes place though, so many people have returned home from holiday by then.

As I'm sure you'll be aware, the most important thing will be to get public liability insurance cover for doing henna tattoos - whether a recognised qualification is required for this may well depend on the insurer - so you would be best checking with your insurer to see if you would be covered.

Hi Ruth

I checked with my insurance and they said it would be fine for me to do with out a certificate, I was wanting to get something similar to the type you get on holiday (the jet back one rather than the indian type brown/red henna) but obviously i want a one thats safe

Right, I expect you'll be wanting Jagua then - Jagua and Henna safe temporary tattoos - this is a safe blue/black temporary tattoo colour from an Amazonian plant. That should give you the sort of colour you want, but without any nasty chemicals like PPD...

Jagua is far from skin safe. As its made using strong alcohol then its also prone to skin reactions especially on children.

For something black you would be best using a body paint such as Temptu which comes in different types depending on your requirements.

Please be careful!

You can get henna pre made, in pure form, pretty cheapy, but i would advise if you are not familiar with henna. The mixing process is the depth of each colour. The longer it is left on the darker it becomes.

Black henna is poisonous and is frowned upon if used, stick with red/brown!

Personally i would recommend doing a course, as the consistancy of henna is varied with the mixing process. HTHs xoxo

Aww the glitter body tattoos are so cool, i brought these the other day and they still on! Il definatly agree with Lou, stick with glitter tattoos instead, way more easier! xoxo

hi,i doing glitter tattoos and henna tattoos. Both very popular among kids and adults. If you have any questions will be glad to help.As far as i know on website from which i got my kit there is sale now.

Hi Thompson 24,

I just prefer to make henna tattoo at home only. As we know that it is better than any other chemical tattoo which may cause any side effect. And it is easy too.

One of my clients ended up in hospital after a henna tattoo. Her leg has been scarred by it. I wouldn't have one done if you paid me.

That sounds like a reaction to PPD (para-phenylenediamine), a.k.a. "black henna".

Both myself and Sonia have had perfectly safe henna tattoos done using proper henna with no skin reactions or adverse effects.

It was a PPD reaction. She now cannot have her hair coloured, except off scalp. The poor girl has really suffered.

That really sucks! I really hate those people who use PPD for doing "henna tattoos"... they ruin people's lives as well as giving henna a bad name!

I am trialling Redken permanent colours. It states very clearly that clients who have had a black henna tattoo in the past should not under any circumstances have permanent colour applied on scalp.

I have trained in henna tattooes and have tried making my own and it is really difficult.
I am really surprised that your insurers have Ok'ed it without training to be honest.

Salmas beauty training offer a one day course in it.
