Hi

Checkout this thread, I've just gone through some of this this week:

http://www.salongeek.com/biz-geek/99208-home-insurance-wont-cover-me-working-home.html

I've also blogged about my experience.

You need product and public liability, but make sure you check with your buildings and contents insurance, mine wouldn't cover me if I worked from home, and many wont. However, I got a good deal from the Halifax. They also said to inform your morgage company (if you rent, your landlord may or may not allow you to work from home).

HTH:hug:

I'm with ABT and I asked they if the insurance would cover me both from home and mobile and it does,,,,,,It covers public and product liability. I was under the impression that that was all I need.
I didn't think it was worth contacting my house insurance I don't have any expensive equipment to insurance,,, think if someone broke into my house think they'll be more interested in the TV that my wax pot lol. :green:

You should make sure that your home insurers know you are working from home, no matter what equipment you have. If, for example, your wax pot caught fire, your home insurance may not pay out as you were running a business that they were not aware of. Things lke ths can invalidate your policy.

Your public, product and treatment liablity will cover you for the treatments that you perform, but often your stock, equipment and property will not be covered.

The cost of your equipment is irrelevant regarding the house insurance. It's the fact that many house insurers point blank will not insure your house if you work from home. So, if you don't contact them, and get broken into, you may not get a single penny for anything that gets stolen, as your insurance will be invalidated.

The reasoning behind this is because the insurers think people may book to have an appointment, then while they are at your house, they're having a look to see what's in your house worth nicking and where's the easiest access point, and come back later.

I had a laugh with the lady from the Halifax, she agreed with me that if you're a home worker, you'll actually be in your house much more than someone who works out of the home, so in effect will be there protecting your house, but the insurance companies don't see it that way.
