Hi all

I'm new on here and unsure of what goes where so hope this question is ok in here!!

I've been wanting to get into Beauty for a long time now, tried college and was accepted but my childcare arrangements fell through 3 days before the beginning of the course so I couldn't do it in the end!

I've seen a few home study courses for various areas of beauty but I'm a little dubious about enrolling on them as don't know if they are any good.

Has anyone any experience of them or someone who has done one? Would you recommend this as a way to study the subject??

Hi Em,

Welcome to Geeks.

I was similar to you. I work in the day school hours and then have the kids so was struggling to find a suitable course to fit in.

I am training with The Carlton Institute where you can complete the modules individually at their training centres on 1 or 2 day courses per module to receive their Diploma. This Diploma is enough to start working and for Insurance purposes. However if you wish to then gain NVQ or IHBC you can do this as home study compiling a portfolio of clients and proof which you then send back to them. When they are happy with your evidence etc you will be invited to attend an assessment day. If you pass this stage you gain your chosen NVQ or IHBC.
I am doing this in Waxing, Eyelash/Brow tinting, Manicures and Pedicures. I am doing the day courses over a 2 month period as this suits me and will send my portfolio off all together so I can do my assessment on all the modules together in one day.
This way of training may not suit everyone but fits in well with my other committments and is also affordable.

Good luck Hx

Many thanks for your reply and welcome!

The Carlton Institute looks really good, hands on training too from the looks of things. My only worry with them is that the nearest to me is Durham and I don't drive yet!! I've asked our local college about night classes and I am enrolling on a nail treatments evening course to start on Sept but I'd really like to be doing more!
I've requested a prospectus from the Carlton, and will see what courses there are. I guess a full day course wouldn't be bad as I'd only have to travel and get childcare on the one day!

Thanks again for your reply!

That is soo weird! I've just come from their website and have requested their brochure!! I think I'm going to go with them, but going to order the book and dvd package to see what the course is like first.

I will do nails first and then add things as I go probably!

Thanks!

Hi emmb :)
I'm doing an essential nails course, and I'm finding it very enjoyable. It's ideal for me as I work full time and can fit the training in when I like, and take as long as I like as there is no time limit. The down side I have found is you need to be quite disciplined with yourself, like I should be practising now instead of mooching around the net!

Also, this site is a god send! I have learnt sooooo much from reading threads on here, and It's really inspiring seeing what other people have created :green:

Hi Lucy

Would you recommend that course then??

The whole home study thing I'm ok with as I studied for 2 years with the Open University and managed to pass my courses with them so I know I 'can' do it, if you know what I mean!

I think the forum is great too! Only found it today but I must have read most posts by now! lol I'd like to do a make up course too but can't seem to find many distance learning ones and our local college haven't done the course for over 3yrs.

When I started looking for home learn courses I came across a few that were for beauty therapy, but I can't say I noticed any for make up (but then I wasn't looking for them!) Do you not have like a local learning center as well as the college? Where I live we have a few places other than the colleges that offer short courses you can do in the evening. I have NO idea if this link will be of any help but It's courses for adult learners in North Yorkshire
North Yorkshire County Council : Adult education

There is an essential nails group on this site which you might find interesting too (you can find it in the community section) I wouldn't like to say I recomend their courses as I haven't completed it yet! But I am definatly pleased that I chose them:hug:

OOoo I'll have a look in the group! Thanks.

I've got the prosectus from the North Yorkshire Adult Learning place and I've done one course with them this year so far, Indian Head Massage. Unfortunately, they don't have any other Beauty Therapy courses on this year apart from Hot Stone Massage and an overview of Complimentary Therapies (both of which I am signed up for!!)

Hi

You should give FTT Beauty and Training Centre a call, they offer Fast Track training courses and all the courses are made up of small groups.
web page is www.ftt-beautyandtraining.co.uk. :)
