More hot stone questions! (sorry) :irked:

How many hot & cold stones do you use in a full body massage?

I have seen so many kits, 38, 48, 52 or 64 stones!

What stones are the best to buy, so far I have come across basalt or marine?

What is the difference between 6qt & 18qt heaters?
What one is the best to go for?

Would you recommend to buy the kit before or after doing the trainning?

What oil do you use during your hot stone massage?

Sorry for all the questions,
I really would appreciate any advice.

I use about 70.

basalt or for hot stone marine are for cold stone

I used the 6 for many years but now use a 18. the 18 is huge like a coffin so if you haven't got much space, don't get it. I managed for 8 years with the smaller one.

Would you recommend to buy the kit before or after doing the trainning?
wait until you've done training.

What oil do you use during your hot stone massage?
I use sweet almond or grapeseed. I never use essential oils as it will taint the stones.

I really would appreciate any advice.

hope that is of help to you!

Wow!
Thank you so much for all the info hippy-chick

Would all 70 stones fit into the smaller heater?

Where do you buy your stones from?

What stones do you have more of; large, medium, cosy toes, trigger etc?

How long does your full body massage last?

Do you think a 1 day course is long enough to learn this massage?

Hi,
First of all i would wait until you have done your training before buying anything.
1 day is normally fine to teach you the basics, but it is practice that will get you to flow. I always tell my students when they get their stone sets to just sit and play with them. When you are new to it it can almost feel like you are holding on to a wet bar of soap :) .
I personally use up to 50 ish stones but it will depend on how many placement stones you are using.
I have 2 6qrt heaters with 2 complete sets(54ish) of naturally shaped basalt stones. I set fits easily in 1 heater the other only just fits. There is a massive size variation between the naturally shaped stones. However if you have been looking on ebay at all there are stone sets that come in a nice wooden box these are all uniformly shaped like bars of soap.
In regard to the size of stones i find it easier to work with medium to large stones for the majority of the body as I have quite large hands, but small stones for more delicate areas.
I offer hot stone in 3 levels hot stone back massage 30 mins, Full body 1hr15 and what we call soul deep (full body hot stone with crystal chakra balance)11/2hrs.
I tend to stick with grapeseed oil.
all the other questions I tend to agree with hippy chick.

Sorry for the long reply but i hope it helps. xx

No, you would struggle to get all of them in a small heater. to be honest, the small heater is fine, it worked for me for 8+ years, but I accumulated more stones and decided to go for the bigger heater. The big heater is big! so you do need decent space.

Where do you buy your stones from?
I got my first set of stones and heater from Ellisons, I also got some stones from thermalstones, and not sure where else. I have 3 stone heaters and 4 sets of stones as I teach it aswell.

What stones do you have more of; large, medium, cosy toes, trigger etc?
I have 2 sacral stones (you only need one and a lot of kits don't provide these so check the listing). 5 chakra stones (large stones that are placed on the chakra points. approx 15 large, 15 medium, 20 small, 10 cosy toes, 4 trigger, 1 pillow, 2 hand.

How long does your full body massage last?
I don't offer a 30 minute treatment as am not going to go to the hassle of setting everything up for that, but I will do it as part of a 1 hour treatment if someone wants a hot stone back with a facial.
My hot stone treatments are usually 60 or 90 minutes.

Do you think a 1 day course is long enough to learn this massage?
If you are trained in massage and competant in massage, yes, one day is fine. you will not walk away totally competant but you will know how to use the stones safely. its practice practice practice.
I tell students its like massaging with mitts on to begin with.

Thanks Helen & Ann, your answers have been VERY helpful!

I will wait til after my trainning to buy my kit and will definatly go for the 6 quart heater, I have seen one kit which includes this and 38 stones! Which after reading your replies doesnt sound like a lot of stones to have in a kit!
