I recently did a private 1-1 foundation make-up course with an established make up artist .. and although I am now able to gain insurance and could technically start "charging" - I plan to take a year out to practice my skills on family and friends to help build up my portfolio and improve skills and to also take further specialist bridal makeup training early next year at either aof - academy of freelance make-up or the london college of fashion (havent decided which yet!)

I obviously need a fairly comprehensive kit to start practicing, I already have a basic SBC ? make-up kit which I had to buy for the one to one - but plan to start adding MAC, Bobbi Brown, Chanel etc as and when I can afford it

My question is, do I meet the criteria required by MAC to become a MAC pro member at the stage I am now at? I know I will be able to get discounts from MAC and Bobbi Brown if I decide to go on the aof course .. but I wondered my foundation makeup certificate is enough to be accepted onto the programme for the moment .. to help me build up my kit

sorry ive waffled on .. just wanted to explain the full situation

great site by the way, have spend cpl days scouring the makeup posts and have gained so much advice about advertising, wedding fairs etc ..

I would imagine first port of call would be to get in touch with MAC themselves, as they will be able to tell you for definate.

try calling instead of emailing if you want a quick reply! most companies have loads of emails to reply to, so a phone call will get answeed right away. x

www.macpro.com
or email [email protected]
You will need copy of Photo identification
2 pieces of professional criteria such as
Diploma, Certificate, contract on production company letterhead, editorial page with name credit, business card with name and specific profession, there are more but this is just to give you an idea.
And £25
In a few weeks you will recieve your card with membership number.
You can download the application form from the above web site and should explain in more depth your requirements to become a Mac pro professional member. :)

hi i've the same problem i wanted to become a member of mac and i sent them an email and i was told that i would have to take a course with them before i could become a member. but i would love to know how you get on.

Im a mac pro and get the discount but havent done their course.

You have to be able to prove that you are a working make up artist with a full make up qualification.

When you say full make up qualification - is the make up element of the nvq level 2 in beauty therapy enough or is there a different make up qualification??

many thanks for all your links and advice ..
i think i will wait until i have completed the aof bridal and promotions course then, and try and buy fewer items - its so expensive to start up .. but worth it im sure !!
i know i will deffo get a MAC discount then, as well as one from Bobbi Brown - when i phoned up they told me bobbi brown only offer discounts to mua who have trained with aof - dont not if this is true or not, as thats sort of what is swaying the course over another one for me, although i must say their course content does looks really thorough
would love to hear from anyone who trained at aof

"Nail Technician" is a listed occupation on the form - could you join with your nail qualifications? (am I right in thinking you're a nail geek?)

I am a mac pro, but only get 30% off cos am registered with them as a Nail Tech.

No... if you are a make-up artist (or have a make-up cert) you get 40%

Yeah, it's 40% for Makeup Artists and 30% for everyone else. You might want to go check out the Spektra group discussion on MAC Pro discounts.

Just checked out that Spektra, looks good! Thanks for that. x

Hi,

I just contacted MAC pro about membership. I am a CIBTAC qualified beauty therapist (the course included a make up module). They said that my discount would be 25%.

I noticed that g5m_sh receives 30% as a nail tech.

I am confused!! do you think they have tweaked their discounts?
