had a regular in yesterday who has l and p nails on,
shed been three weeks between apts,
sat her down , nails looked great
i asked her how theyd been
fine she replied same as usual,
i thought well this is going to be a quick appt as all nails were in tact no lifting apart from a minor amount around a few nails( basically looked dry rather than lifting)

i started to rebalance and actually ended up having to file all product off and start from scratch , as when i was filing the product just looked like it was all breaking up!

very strange, it just looked like it was flaking off the nail
and the more i filed the more flaked away
what could be the cause of this?

anyone?

this has never happened to me before:eek:

thanks in advance x

Has she been using any chemicals with her hands, like Cillit Bang?

no i asked her what shed been doing lately????
no difference in anything

also shed had a brisa top gloss on which was still very shiny
they looked lovely before i started to rebalance

thanks for the reply thankyou x

What grit file were you using? Maybe it was too harsh?

Also how long had the product been on if only 3 weeks from a new set, this is a puzzle!

If they have had a few rebalances and been on for a few months it could just be the product has become brittle, due to age,( although if product age usually there would be lifting and discoloration too) and if your client hasn't been using her oil.

I am still wondering if you were using too heavy a grit.......If the nails were in as good condition as you say, then a 180grit and a 240 should have been sufficient.

yep izzi,
started off with 180 , then onto 240 nothing harsher!!
these nails have been rebalanced over and over but now she has a new set on!!

but there was no discoulouring or lifting( to speak of)
looked lovely and pink, nice clarity not cloudy atall
thats why im stumped lol
thanks for the reply izzi xx

Couldn't possibly have been working a bit dry that day?...clutching at straws now!

Did you ask her if she had started taking any medication. I know a friend had a regular for extensions and never had any problems with her until she started taking HRT. The nails would not stay on! Lifting, cracking etc :)

lol cathie !! cant remember, but i dont think so!!

and no, no change in meds or anything,
i always ask this at each appt
thanks so far
its a mystery!!

hi,

Just a thought ... what was the weather like on the day that you applied? i have had this happen when i have appiled a new set and it has been cold in the salon and outside ..it seems to crystalise but look perfect... untill you file it... just a thought if this could be your problem?? H x

We have the same problem when we use brisa topgloss on the nails, they simply cannot use enough solar oil when the topcoat is on. Don.'t know if you alwas use geltopcoat on top.... But we stopped using it at our salon for the same reason.
It's like the brisa topcoat holds it together, eventhough they are trashed underneath.

Imagining from a (very good) description is often tricky!

Remember. the overlay is a plastic. When plastic is made in a factory, the formulation is carefully mixed and reproduced perfectly every time. L&P overlays can always be 'hit and miss' (a brush, a liquid, a powder, variable temperature).

Good quality brands are designed for this but......

This type of plastic is also porous (few UV gels are). Some chemicals can adversly affect l&p (e.g. Cillit Bang and many many more)

This sounds like a dry mixture or a contaminated mix or very cold atmosphere/hands that has been hidden by a gel top coat. (This isn't a critism cos 'it happens' to the best technicians!)

I really don't like to see same old 'medication' possibility put forward for most problems. Think logically: medication taken orally comes out through the nail bed and nail plate within a 3 week period and makes a plastic overlay break up?

How many chemicals do you know that break up a l&p overlay when put straight on it, let alone filtering through the body into the nail bed, through the nail plate and then eat through an overlay?

This also isn't meant to be a harsh critism either. I just think medication is so often used instead of thinking through a problem

was it very cold 3 weeks ago???

thanks marian( mum),
i am trying to think through this problem as you suggest,
thanks for all the help so far
i wouldnt normally post about my problems as they are normally straight forward rebalances that i do,
but because ive never seen this happen to me before, i suppose i would like to know why, in case it happens again

btw this client has been a regular for about two yrs now, and always has rebalances, but now she has a new set on,( nnos)
the previous appt was a rebalance so zone 2 would have been old product

thankyou everyone xx

wow this is strange.. maybe your ratio was too dry last time? but then again if that was the case then they probably wouldve started lifting.. idk weird!
