So just now I’ve been let go by my boss. I’ve had more complaints about my treatments than my manager lead on.. I don’t know what they were about or anything- I didn’t even know I had anymore. This was my first job since qualifying and I lasted a year. What do I do now? Do I admit defeat that beauty therapy just isn’t for me or do I try and get another job in the industry. I’m completely heartbroken if I’m honest [emoji20]

It sounds a bit counterproductive of them not to tell you about the reviews so you can improve

Literally all she said was you’ve had a lot of complaints and we’re having to give free treatments so I’m not making any money. So I said oh I’m sorry I didn’t know I had anymore and she then said I know you have tried really hard, maybe just focus on one treatment and get really good at that. And she said you’re really good at.. there was a long pause.. massage and looked at me. I collected my stuff handed the keys back and walked home crying.. just feel really lost don’t know what to do now at all [emoji20]

Sorry to hear this but you must not let it defeat you.

As you are not long qualified and in your first job, no-one should expect you to be flawless and speedy. A good manager will work with you to develop your basic skills and help you grow as a therapist.

I don’t think your manager has acted very professionally in this situation because with a new starter, they should be setting you small goals and regularly reviewing your work. If there’s a problem, they should make sure you are made aware of it immediately and work with you to help you to improve.

In this case, because she doesn’t appear to have mentioned anything previously, she’s either incredibly incompetent as a manager or (I suspect that) she might not be telling you the truth and is just looking for an excuse to let you go without making you officially redundant.

Either way, this says more about her than you.

Thank you I’ve spoken to my friends and family and they said the same thing what you have just said. At the start I struggled with gel polish removal and she sat and explained with me how to do it, but that is all she has done. Apart from telling me to practice. But the salon itself is just quiet so I don’t get loads of clients either way. I had to show a new girl round last week and my manager said she was starting in September.. I should of put 2 and 2 together but I didn’t. She does all aesthetics which I don’t do. I got a Year’s experience from it so that’s a positive but I’m looking for a new job now x

She sounds like a pretty rubbish manager, I agree with what AcidPerm said

I’m overthinking it now.. but there’s been quite a few incidents between my manager and owner (boss) where it has been a bit two faced and not so truthful. So who knows. I will miss working there as I loved it but I think there are better options out there for me. Il try to stay positive but just needed to vent and feel sorry for myself but thank you x

Chin up - onwards & upwards....
We all made mistakes - and if we’re honest - still do on the odd occasion
Keep going - practice makes perfect

Aww sorry to read this but i agree with the others, it seems as though she is looking for an excuse to let you go!

Can you do mobile or set-up a home salon or something? You could work in friends and family, get a insta/facebook page and post all your pictures... the word will spread! Im NVQ Level 2 qualified in beauty and i know how hard it can be yo get your coincidence up but if you work on family and friends like i did it really helps to boost your confidence!

Dont't let ANYBODY think you are not good enough (especially not a manager who doesnt appear to know how to manage)...the world is your oyster and you are obviously gifted in beauty as you wouldnt have passed your course, so hold your head high and go and do what you love! Xxx

I don’t drive so can’t do mobile, I posted a advertisement on Facebook with my services I’m qualified in explaining I only have one years experience. I’ve already had 3 people messaging me regarding a job which is promising :) I think my manager didn’t tell me to protect me as that’s what she said last time.. but I think I was getting slagged off to the owner. I have my reasons into thinking that. In all honesty if I do go to these job interviews, if they ask me the reason I left, what should I say? I’m worried if I’m 100% truthful they won’t employ me but I don’t want to lie either x

I feel sad for you being in what seems like an impossible position, but some of your previous historical posts regarding this boss of yours sounds like it's her management that is the cause of your failing.

Other therapists in the salon where you worked will probably be carrying her in actual fact.
Leaving is hard but you must now look at your true skills set.
My friend specialises in very good facials, because she hates nails and feet. You have mentioned in the past that you are a bit shaky , especially painting nails so don't put yourself in the position of doing something stressful until you have gained more confidence.

As for a job interview, you need to see if the manager will be someone willing to spend a little time with you to improve your self worth as you have taken quite a bashing.
During the interview, well done for geting them so far! Could you just simply say that the salon wasn't very busy so I was last in first to go? Your timings are a little slow and you weren't getting enough clients to build up your speed. So that it's avoiding a fib. What do you think?

That sounds like a perfect response! Thank you. Yes I agree with you 100%. I had actually built my confidence up finally and the last weeks I felt I was finally getting somewhere- my nail painting has improved a lot! (Practice makes perfect and all that) I love doing nails and waxing, so will continue to practice at home until I feel I have mastered those. But I have recently found out (this morning in fact) I had more complaints than I was aware of and my boss hadn’t told me to protect me?? But instead of sitting me down and telling me I was slagged off and lied too? My confidence was knocked yesterday- I would lying if I said it wasn’t. But I advertised on Facebook and I’ve already got 2 interviews lined up (one was too far too travel) so I’m remaining positive. So I will take your advice on board and wish me luck [emoji4] x

We will all be rooting for you and the right boss/job combination will come along i am sure of it. I also thnk that maybe becoming self employed at a later stage will be perfect for you as you get to choose which services you will offer.
A year since qualifying and a shite boss is tough ! Bosses aren't all the same. My boss was an angel, so supportive and I learned a lot from her. Not practically though as she was not skilled in all aspects of beauty, just a lovely human. Kind and positive and coulld handle people very well. I hope you get the same as me and it will bring out the best in you.

Me too!! I’ve had my fair share of shit bosses over the years, but I’ve completed the first year which everyone tells me is the hardest to get past! I’m still finding out my strengths and weaknesses and it’s all a learning curb. I will keep you updated on how I get on.. time to dust off the cv update it and smash these interviews! X

So just a update.. I have a trial day tomorrow at a express bar in sainsburys.. I passed the trade test which was a gel manicure (I got timed 27 mins) and she stated she was impressed with the timing and overall finish. (She said I was the quickest to complete it out of the people she interviewed). So tomorrow I’ve got to do a 9-12 shift... I’m soo soo nervous it’s unreal.. the nerves are kicking in big time. I’m sure il be fine but have you got any tips to help me feel less nervous? The treatments il be doing will be mainly facial waxing and gel manicures. It’s a walk in service so I think this is either going to make or break me.. will update tomorrow evening to see how I got on. Wish me luck [emoji51]

Well done! I am so pleased for you.
Smile, impeccable uniform, neat hair you know the rules. Just enjoy your new start. Remember to do your consultation cards and get as much of the equipment you will need for the individual service so that it goes smoothly.

Some of your clients will be new to the treatments so , that will be a confidence boost as you are in charge.

Breathe away the nerves, and have a good breakfast.

I think that you won't sleep all that well tonight , but hey ho you will be fully pumped up on adrenaline....Just enjoy the day.
You are the qualified professional, believe in yourself.

Good luck, catch up with you tomorrow !

I hope you’re getting paid?

No I don’t think I am- but because it’s only up the road to me (5-7 min walk) and for 3 hours I have nothing else to loose x

So that went really well! I did a eyelash and eyebrow tint, a eyebrow and upper lip wax and 3 gel manicures.. I did the most I’ve done in 3 hours than I did at the old salon. I loved it. Because it’s a walk in I had no time to get nervous and just got on with it- boosted my confidence. I got £1 tip. And my new “manager” if I can call her that yet said I did a really good job and il hear from her Wednesday if I got the job or not.. she has 2 other people to see. So fingers crossed

You must be so chuffed with yourself , and well done for getting through a nerve racking few hours. You actually have done a lot in those 3 hours considering it's all been in a new environment.
Sleep well to make up for your lost sleep last night and good luck for the next few days ahead.
