Ok i want to be a nail technician, but i really dont know were to start. Ive looked online and ive found a website www.essentailnails.com who offers home study courses in gel acyrlic and fiberglass nails plus nail art and airbrush nail art. I want to do the gel nail course and the maintance course which will cost me £500 and the nail art and airbrush which is around £500 aswell.

Will this give me a proper qualification to work in a salon or even start a mobile business?

Do i have to go to tech to do this because it will be really hard for me to do that (ive a child and not many people willing to babysit)

Any help will be appreciated.

ok here's my pennys worth for what it's worth.
I havn't done the course you mentioned or any other home study course as I need the 121 help a classroom can give.
I know of a few geeks that have done this course and have gone on to do more training as they feel it wasn't enough to give them the confidence to strike out in to the industry.
I am not saying it's a bad course it's just not for evrybody.
As far as I'm aware it's a home study course and you send your homework up to them to be marked/assessd.

How about an evening class in collage to get you started? This is usually 1 night a week and mayby when your child is older you might be in a better situation to get some more training.

You say that you have difficulties getting a babysitter...just something to think about if it's hard getting a babysitter to do your training won't it be equally hard to get a babysitter for when you want to go moblie?

Good Luck in your decision

Well when i finally get my training (if i ever figure out were 2 go 2!) my son will be in a daycare, atm i dont work so i keep him at home with me.

I can do gel nails and basic nail art, i do all my friends when i got the gel nail kit for xmas a few years ago and the look lovely. but i want to be able to take this hobby into a proper job i need the qualifications first

Well that will be one problem sorted
If your prepared to send £500 on a home study course why don't you give some other companies a ring to get some info,CND,Ezflow,Young Nails are just 3 suggestions (if you use the search bar you will find LOADS MORE  )

You might be suprised how sympathetic these companies are to your situation and might be able to work with you and your babysitting problems.

I'm not trying to put you off the home study course I just feel that there might be other options out there for you since you seem to have a keen interest in becoming a proffesional nail tech.

Hi there,
Bio sculpture do a 1 1/2 day course in belfast you also get the kit along with your training for around the same price as the course you are looking at- contact them and get some details:hug:

ive email bio sculpture hope they will reply. but isnt a day and a half a bit short, i mean it wouldnt make me a fully qualified nail tech surely.
Im seriously concidering this home study course but im going to go to the job center they can help you with further training, even tho they r useless it mite give me some idea

Hiya, I could not decide between paying more for CND or going with essential nails and my hubby ended up buying me the home learn acrylic course from essential nails (probably to shut me up lol) but they really don't teach you everything you need to know. I have only completed one assesment (which i did pass) but i am already thinking planning on doing a conversion with CND once i have a bit more experience. The essential nails course is ok but it doesn't teach you thickness of product and you have to fill in a whole card before you even know if your work is any where near good enough. Their student support is excellent tho and always there to answer questions if you need them.

In a way i am glad that i am doing this course as its giving me the foundations to build upon but if I had the choice again i think personally I would prefer to learn in a class room. hth. xx

For this course with Biosculpture you have to be allready trained in manicuring/nail enhancement qualification to do this,as it is a conversion...after you have done your one day you then go back for your asessment with them.

If you have around 500 to spend i would go with a reputable brand for training...if it is gel that you want to be proficient in there are many reputable companies out there.

I can recommend Creative, they do a 5 day foundation course which is extremely good as many on here will tell you. They have training centres around the country and all their trainers are trained to a very high standard.

The UK distributor is Sweet Squared - call them on 0845 210 6060

I considered home learning nail courses too, but was concerned about how you could actually learn something without being shown hands-on. I also considered manufacturers courses (CND, NSI etc), but eventually opted for a night class in college and I have to say I'm glad I did! I started last September and will finish in a few weeks, so it has taken quite a while, but I feel the knowledge I have gained re manicures and pedicures, health & safety etc has been very worthwhile. I have to admit that I have not been so happy with the training on artifical nails but this is mostly due to me not liking the particular products they are using. I have now decided to further my training with conversion courses with CND as this is the product I have chosen to use. For me I feel this was totally the right decision as I don't feel I would have had time to build up the confidence in a 5 day course, it is a lifechanging move for me and I wanted to be sure I got it right so didn't go down the "fastest or cheapest" route, but you just have to go with what feels right for you. Good luck with whatever you decide.

Miss Leona,

there is a nail & beauty school in Mansfield & they do an NVQ 2 in nail technology, its pricey £999 - but its over in a month & you can get your insurance with this if you are going mobile after you qualify. Juat something for you to think about!

I would do the CND Foundation course, it really is worth it. I passed last October and have only done my own and my 3 daughters' nails to date but am doing my first real client next week, it takes a while to build confidence but the training is first class and the products cannot be beaten, believe me I have tried a few trial kits of other brands and nothing compares IMHO :)
