I have been invited to have a stall/treatment area at the local primary school's Indulgence Evening which will be from 7 - 10pm ie. 4 hours! We will be charged £15 for the stall and then treatments will be charged at £5 for a 15 minute session. They talk about providing treatments such as manicures, massages, head massages, reflexology etc.

I thought it would be a good way to publicise myself as well as making some profit. Has anybody else done something like this to give me some feedback before i go ahead and book it?

Obviously a full manicure cannot be done in 15 minutes so does one just do a shape and varnish??

Hi Carole,
I did a few of these nights at the beginning of the year. They were very enjoyable but extremely tiring as well, as I did'nt get to lift up my head all night. I was booked up all night with extras lining up. I had similar prices as well, except the time was 20mins.What I did was, I took along display boards of simple designs (that I could finish in time), for freehand and airbrushing so they could see what was available. I don't think I'll be taking the airbrush anymore though, takes too much time cleaning in between, and people seem to prefer freehand in my area. As for manicures, you can't really do a full manicure in 15mins, it's just shape and polish with some solar oil, and hopefully this will encourage them to buy some oil off you. If you want you could take some retail stock with you as well. This did'nt work too well for me, as I did'nt have time to deal with them.
BUT make sure you take along lots and lots of leaflets and business cards and display them where every1 can see them. I'd thought they were a waste of time, but it's only now I've started getting bookings from those nights. People seem to hold onto leaflets and call when they need you, even after a few months.

I hope I've made some sense, and helped you somewhat. Do your 1st one and you'll want to keep doing them.
Sorry, but one more thing, if you like nail art, do a different design on each one of your own nails for the night. It's the best advertisement you can get, and it's free.

I hope I have'nt bored you to tears and GOOD LUCK!

You most certainly havent bored me at all. Thank you so much for all the advice: i'm as nervous as hell and my first reaction was "oh, no i'm not doing that" but i think it will yield some business. I'm not surprised its tiring!! I do a lot of freehand nail art (i love it!) and have a whole board full of em. Would i have time to do a shape, polish and nail art in 15 mins??? How would i handle that? Also, do you think it would be advisable to take a friend with me so they could handle the retail selling side of it? Also for company and moral support of course!!

Hi Carole

I think i would take someone along the first time i did it, for moral support if nothing else!
Good luck, and let us know how you get on

By all means take a friend along. I did once, and did a different design on each of her nails, and she walked around all night showing them off and getting me more business. The thing is she's a nail biter as well, so everytime some1 said "I can't have nail art on my short nails" she'd flash her nails at them, convincing them to have a go. Now I'm stuck doing her nails for nothing all the time. Oh well, I had to thank her somehow.

Hi Carole,

I had a stall at our local primary schools summer fete last year for mostly the same reasons as you. I had a HUGE demand for body art tattoos and nail gems with the kids, and was mad busy the whole 3 hours I was there. I definatley go ahead and book a stall...

I'm booked up for the very same thing on the 26th of this month
What is your advice on the general running of the table?
I have a friend whose very arty coming with me, how long did it take to do each customer & what did you charge. I've been given a free reign on what to offer & my prices.
Thanks

Sara, i'd be interested in this info as well although i'm set to a £5 for 15 minute slot - what would you do for that? Aylin mentioned shape and polish but also mentioned nail art - reckon there's time for all? Very nervous!!!

As my "audience"! were mostly children under the age of 10/11, I offered very basic services. I had a huge stock of the transfer type body art/tattoos - they were very popular, and I charged between 50p and £1 dependant on size - (these were really popular with the boys). I also offered a gem design for £1 which the girls went MAD for! I did get some interest though from parents, and from mums from other schools wanting to know if I would do their summer/Christmas fayres too!

I would suggest takings LOADS of business cards and price lists to hand out on the day, and if you do have someone to help, maybe they could do this for you, along with taking any bookings (don't forget your diary!) and doing the cash side of things. Make sure you have a reasonable float too.

If possible, have a selection of samples of any design you want to offer.
As your fayre is a later one, you would probably have more demand for things like "15 minutes of pampering" - you could do the cuticles, shape the nails, then either polish, or do a gem design (gems would be better as you won't have to wait for polish to dry properly), or you could do a 3 minute hand soak, followed by cuticles, shape and a hand & arm massage....Don't be nervous just get organised before hand. I bet you both really enjoy it!!

Good Luck XX

Hi Carole

I meant you could EITHER do shape & polish OR nail art, 15mins. won't be enough for both. I personally only do nail art, never done shape & polish. What I usually find is ladies have a manicure with some1 else and then they come to me for nail art, which is what I prefer anyway. But make sure they wash their hands before you start as the oils and creams prevent the polishes and paints going on properly.

Aylin

And Sara I hope you don't mind me stealing your idea of the temp. tattoos for the fete I am doing this month. Also can I ask where you get the transfer tattoos from?
Thanks

Hi Aylin,

Of course I don't mind!! I got them from all over the place, some when I went on holiday to Spain/Greece, others from craft shops etc. I still have a fair few left, including quite a few crystal art ones, and I don't think our school are having a fayre this year - if you like I can send you a few?? PM me with your postage details if you want any...

Hi Carole

Really pleased for you; I'm hoping to get into doing this sort of thing soon as well, but haven't yet approached anyone! I wish I was a bit nearer to you and didn't have my kids to worry about because otherwise I'd offer to be your helper for the evening, just for the experience!

For those of you that managed to retail successfully, what were your best sellers? Has anyone specialised in selling Creative products only?

Let me know how much you want for them and we'll sort it out.

Hi Aylin
Oooh i hope i didnt offend you!! I did wonder about fitting it all in - thought u must be super quick!!! Thing that worries me (coz i'm a worry wart!) is what if there isnt somebody there doing manicures? Then i wouldnt have people to do nail art on! I have to tell them what i'm doing so i cant decide nearer the time can i? Help!!!

Oh Carole,
I hope I did'nt come accross too harsh. I just typed in capitals so you would know hat I meant. I did'nt mean it to look upsetting. And believe me Iam pretty slow, 15mins. sometimes is'nt enough, depending on the design.

Take care

Hi hunny, obviously we're both worried about offending the other!!! I'm fine and sounds like you r too!!! What do you reckon i should do about what service to offer re not knowing if there will be someone doing manicures for me to do the nail art on?

Sleep tight!

Hiya,
Why don't you try getting in touch with the school and asking them, if there's any1 doing manicures. Tell them what you really want to do. Last one I did, the secretary tried to talk me into doing manicures, even though there was other people doing them, as she did'nt think nail art would interest any1. I managed to convince her in the end to book me for nail art. Well, I did'nt stop all night, and everytime she walked past my table, she apologised for underestimating nail art, and said she could'nt believe how much interest there was, especially as she did'nt like nail art personally. Well, that showed her.
You tell them what you want to do, you know your job, they don't.

Love

Hi Aylin
Ok, i'll call the lady who organises it at the school today and explain my predicament and see if i can make a decision nearer the time: ie. say i'll do nail art unless nobody is doing manicures in which case i'll do that. They must have come across this before, surely?? How many different nail art designs did you offer? I know i need to go for simple ones but i'm worried that if i went for something like dots along the smile line, it wouldnt take me 15 mins and they would think they'd been conned!!! What sort of stuff did you offer? Thanx so much for all your help on this.

Hi Carole

Like you, I have just been invited to attend one of these evenings. For me, my worry is there is already someone there doing manicures so I have been asked to do Pedicures?????!!!!!!!!! I'm not as worried about the treatment as the introduction before hand!!

I'm still not too sure what to do - has anyone ever done pedicures before at one of these evenings and what did you do. I have allowed 15 min time slots and thought about offering shape, polish and nail art on the big toe. I am going to take all my nail art designs along but only offer a couple on the night (the easy and quick ones!!!!).

I am going to take all my spa products with me for people to be able to smell, touch, etc. Other than polish, mini scentsations, nail files, solar oil - what other retail products would you take?

Any tips from any one - greatly appreciated.

Good luck for your evening - it will be worth it when we are chocka block with appointments!!

Cheers
Madeline

Hi Madeline, when's your evening? Mine isnt until 1 October so i've got plenty of time to get nervous  . What do you mean by "introduction before hand"?? I'd have a few trials coz i reckon doing a shape, varnish and nail art on big toe is a bit adventurous in a 15 min time slot. Were you planning on using basecoat then two coats of polish?

I was wondering what to take on the retail side especially as i shall be offering nail art (mind u i'll look a bit daft if they dont have somebody else there doing manicures wont I?). I dont want to buy a whole load of stock and end up being lumbered with it.

Keep me posted on how it goes!
Best wishes
