Someone got me thinking about this this week, when you are looking for inspiration for nail art or just nails with a difference, do you fall back on the art that you always do and know how to do and techniques that you know, or do you seek inspiration from somewhere else? The guy I was talking to did a nail, inspiration taken from a perfume ad in a magazine and it was a fab nail.

I do not have an artistic bone in my body, so say for the dress a nail comp, did you find a dress and take inspiration from the fabrics and textures to create your nails?

If you have a client with a special event coming up and her outfit is black and white....what would you do....rebalance pink and white as usual or think outside the box and come up with something funky to go with her outfit?

Right now I would just rebalance, but it has got me thinking.

How do you think....this is something I have to get attuned to and work on....don't know if it will ever come.

That is a very good question. I take ideas from every where. Flowers, leaves, sand, wire, candy wrappers ive figured out that pretty much everything can be incased in acrylic. Fabric prints from the craft store I use as designs. Carpet, pictures in magazines, different languages I love kanji characters in nail art sorta just everything around me.

As far as what would I do for a night out. I would think of a couple of things.
  • a black moon going covering the whole lanula going from corner to corner (if that makes sense) leave the nail bed clear and do a contrasting p&w style colored tips. Colors like a hot pink, red, yellow something bold.
  • p&w style with black glitter tips, put some jewels on it
  • clear tips and kanji characters with a black stripping brush
  • black lace tips with a contrasting color underneath and on the ring fingers the whole nail with the lace
  • do a p&w style but at an angle from a corner on one side of the tip to the center of the side wall on the other side ( im not sure if that makes sense) and some glitter, flowers, rinestones
  • silver glitter tips with some art

Anyways theres just a couple ideas

Hope this is what you were looking for

Wow, that's inspiration you got just from this post! Thank you! These things would never enter my mind unless someone like you suggested them!

You are quite welome anytime. Let me know what you decide to do on her nails

I get loads of inspiration from allsorts of things, for instance tonite I have done myself fish scale nails, basically disco slices in all shades cut in half and imbedded into gel. I have done just the smiles on all nails apart from the ring fingers where I have done the full nail! I got the inspiration from my fish!! lol!!

If somebody came to me wanting special nails for a night out then if they were willing I woild try to match with their outfit!

Looking through the gallery on here gives me alot of ideas tbh!

Cathie, I had this happen to me the other week, my client was going on a big night out and her outfit was black and white. She is NNO and wanted the tips of her nails black.

I know her well as a regular and knew if I'd done that she'd wake up one day and scream with them! She hates white on tips too! I had to really think so I done a natural with slight glitter and subtle black nail art encased, she was delighted!

I was thinking all the the time through my prep and everything I suggested she just said what do you think?!!!!

I knew at the the end of the day what she could cope with but if I didn't know her it would have been so much harder.

I always try to show my clients on tips what the effect will be if they are not sure.
I had one this week, going to a wedding, had the dress, shoes, hat and hubby's kilt:eek: to match!
tartan nails? Didn't know what she wanted so I did my thing and she was happy.

It's hard though :)

It would depend on what the client wanted. If a client has a special occasion, I will ask if they want something to go with the outfit and take it from there.

For the dress the nail comp, I found a dress I liked and did a nail to match as near as possible. For dress a nail (sandal) comp, I had a pair of sandals I love and did my toes to match as near as possible.

I don't think I have the most creative mind and I am not that big into nail art, etc, but I find I can still do nails to match an outfit with simple but effective and wearable designs.

Most of my inspiration is weird. I'll look at something and a picture will pop up in my head, it could be anything. I could be looking at an elephant and an idea might pop into my head it might not. With my oriental nails I had gone down to the local craft shop, and was flicking through the pattern books trying to find a pattern for the kimono. As I was going through it I would come across a pattern and poof there was an idea for some nail art,etc.......although if you were to ask me now what they were I would probably look at you as if you were speaking alien. Couldn't remember them if I tried.
