Hey everyone this is my first tread here ,I have been reading a lot and learning lots of stuff. This brings me to the subject of NSS and MMA.

I life in Rotterdam there are a lot of NSS, i want to get my nails done by a true professional. The only professional I know is the lovely woman who trained me.But it would cost me over €90 to get a new set of gel nails. And thats way to much for my student income.

So know im looking for a salon in my neighberhood, whould it be rude if I would ask the nailtech if I could read the ingriedientslist of her products. Because I don't want to be leured in to a NSS again, been there, done that and it ruiend my nails.

When I was last your way, 2002, there was a very good nail and hair salon over in either Scheidam or Vlaardingen. I can't remember which. Let me see if I can find it for you and you can give a ring.

To answer your original question, a professional salon should not mind your asking about the products they use.

email me offline at [email protected].

:)

It is absolutely NOT rude behaviour to ask for an MSDS sheet on the salon's products. If they refuse to give it to you - walk away!

You are being a responsible consumer for asking questions that could impact your nail health - good for you!

Yep - any mention of MMA monomer (methyl methacrylate) and run a mile! Whereas EMA monomer (ethyl methacrylate) is perfectly OK and is what most professional L&P systems use. Although an NSS is likely to be particularly cagey about any use of MMA anyway (unmarked bottles - or - worse - old bottles of professional product re-filled with cheap MMA)!!!

The bottles in these places don't say MMA on them and it is only in the monomer that MMA is the problem.

Do you really know what you are looking for?

Many NSS put MMA monomer into branded bottles to fool the public.

How will you really be able to tell when these practices go on?

Go by reputation ... surely there must be a salon with a good rep in Rotterdam?

I go over 2ce a year and there are plenty of excellent nail technicians and salons over there - do not be scared just ask alot of questions before booking
where did you train?
what products do you use?
what services do you offer?

Thanks a million for your replies, I have been to salons that my friends have loved. But being the only one that has any training the don't look at the details: using a drill on the natural nail, lousy prep, fingers that hurt and dirty brushes/files.

And to answer Geeg's remark about putting product in another container, that's one way I got fooled. The nails that they(yes they 2 techs taking turns) did were shiney and smooth. But they were thick as my bum and rockhard , it took me ages to file them off.

if you have genuine gel nails , gel doesnt contain mma,
its present only in the monomer of some liquid and powder acrylics.

If your trained hun practise doing your own,
it will save you a fortune, be a good advert for if you want any clients and will make you proud when you can do a nice set on your own hands

surely she must have other newly qualified tech in the same situation would she not pair you with another student and you can do each others nails....
