I am hoping to start a beauty course and am not sure what is the best route, my options are

1. NVQ level 2 and 3 in beuaty therapy at the carlton institute; or

2. ITEC diploma beauty specialist and the ITEC anatomy, phsiology & body massage diploma at the cotswold academy.

Does anyone have any advice on which is the better route to take.

Hi,

Im currently doing a ITEC in beauty specialist and I'm really enjoying it! What sort of study have you done before? Our course tutor says that ITEC is harder in some ways that an NVQ as you have to sit Therory Paper (6 hrs I think but not sure!) and then a 4 hr Practicle.

Where NVQ you are building a portfolio and are checked after each unit.

I have done NVQ before but in fitness Level 2 and 3 and they are good if you tend to freek out with exams as you're continually assessed But ITEC is a slightly higher qualification and internationally recognised - I think

Please correct me if I'm wrong fellow Geeks.

i have done itec beauty and wouldnt again , the end exam is awful :irked: , i cope much beter with ongoing assesment :green: , but the itec is a good qualification, but if i did it all again i would do an nvq , as i preferred this when i did my hairdressing, i do much better getting mini assesments than one huge exam at the end , coz my nerves cant cope  , hth dee xx

if i were you i go for the nvq as this is a national qualification and if you apply for a job this is what they ask for i have been qualified for 18 months now and this is what they look for, as i have been for many interviews and most of the salon don't reckonise the itec as their is more involved in the nvq.

jenny:rolleyes:

Hi georgia,
As a salon owner and employer, I would choose itec everytime. It is internationally recognised so you will be able to work allover the world. Also if i were interviewing for a vacancy and it was down to a girl with nvq and a girl with itec i would choose the girl with itec.
but as already mentioned If you dont like exams and could go to pieces then perhaps a 3hr theory (i believe it is now a multiple choice exam now and not written as when i did mine) and 4hr practical (not on the same day)then itec is not for you.
from julie
hope this helps

I am currently doing an Itec in Beauty Therapy and NVQ in hairdressing and find both have their pros and cons. If you are like to be assessed as you go then go for NVQ but if you want to have one big exam at the end then go for Itec. Don't forget there is BABTEC & VTEC also. When I was applying to the colleges, I found going along and speaking to someone was really useful in making my decision. The Carlton Institute are very good I hear but the NVQ is an intensive course (6 days I think) and I know I would have found it extremely hard work and probably would have felt completely baffled as there is a lot involved!

xx

I was also thinking of doing a course on body massage and there are two kinds of courses I can go on but one is an ITEC which takes about a year part-time, two nights a week and the other is an SVQ which is 10 weeks - 10 days practical at school and the rest is theory at home and case studies.

I have no idea which one to choose, which is the better?

I have studied in hair, beauty and holistic therapy Qualificatios in City Guilds, NVQ and VTCT and all required practical and exams to qualify so would it be down to where you attend courses as some students found the exams hard. As moving to Higher qualification a year in class and hundred hours in case studies so reading comments on ITEC I wouldn’t say it was harder just another governing body ?

Hi Georgia,
I know yours is an old post, but I was wondering which route you went down? I'm currently deciding whether to do the ITEC level 3 at Cotswold academy or level 3 massage VCTC at another school.
Wondered how you got on?
