I'm thinking of making a few bits of jewellery maybe find out what I'm good at and I think its nice to have pieces that no one else has. Where do people get their supplies from and where is a good place to start with it. I'm going to give acrylic rings a shot first. Does anyone sell their jewellery and does it retail well.

Thanks Kim!

Laura, it really depends on what sort of things you are thinking about. I sell to my nail clients, I do commissions and I also sell via some online outlets.

There are so many jewellery makers out there that it is really difficult to find something which is different. It is really hard to compete with the mass produced imported stuff.

You will know your clients and what sort of market they are in - individuals willing to pay for quality and craftsmanship or people who are happy to buy cheap tat (for want of a better phrase LOL).

If I can help with any more specifics then let me know.

Thanks fiona im thinking of seeing what I can make with acrylic first then I might move on to using wire and beads and things Ive got so many ideas in my head its just giving them a go

There are some good magazines out there - Bead, Beads and Beyond and a new one called Jewellery Making plus there are several American ones.

The acrylic rings seem a great idea, then maybe you could move to bangles.

it is really difficult to find a niche that hasnt already been covered.

i sell my hand made jewellery to my nail clients. i only make up my designs in sterling silver and high quality stones and beads. this way it takes me the same time as if i were making it in less expensive material but it has a higher percieved value so i make more profit per item than if i used synthetic materials.

to be honest though i couldnt make a living on just jewellery, the market is too saturated.
