Hiya, I was wondering how many of you do just nails and how many do beauty as well? I only do nails at the moment but am contemplating doing a beauty course of some sort to offer waxing etc. Is it too much to do mobile? I have a huge amount of stuff just for nails and airbrushed body/ nail art, do you carry a couch or something to do waxing on? and is the beauty as involved or more involved than nails (didnt know that was going to be so complicated when i started out! lol) just thought it may be better to offer more than one service as my mum pointed out that nails are really a luxury that you have done when you can afford it but you wouldnt want to go back to shaving after having waxing done so may be more repeat clients. (dont forget where i am in the world LOL)

sorry for all the questions, but i would be greatful for any opinions/ advice. Thanks x

Its a good question Sherrie ... I have thought about it too, both for salon and mobile, .. how it may supplement a few empty pages lol

I know that when I had my nails done at home the lady also did waxing etc and she bought her stuff and I put a towel on my bed and she did it there ... dont know if this is normal practice as I only did it the once ... i am one of those who went back to shaving lol

Jo xx

i do beauty and im at college now doing nail extensions.

Hi Sherrie, can't help out on the mobile waxing cos I didn't do it, bet yes do beauty too because it does help to fill the gaps, and like your mum says there is no way I would pluck my eyebrows - too painful and I'm a squinny!! Do you do peds cos they're v popular too, esp if you give say £5 discount if they have it done with infills / fullset.

Funnily enough our company name is Nail Envy & Beauty Too - you can see how I got the name lol!

Actually I know someone who did waxing mobile, but gave up when her wax spilt all over her car, so you'll need to be careful - maybe someone else can give you some advise on this one.

I only do nails and that was what I decided to specialise in. Looking at it from another point of view, if you do too many things then your ability to keep up to date with everything may become too diluted.

If you are going to do beauty then I think the full course is about 2 years.

You may find that one part of the beauty side appeals to you more than others so you might specialise in that.

Personally I just love nails and do not have any desire to do anything else. However if you have rent, rates etc to pay then it might be difficult to ride out the lean times doing nails.

I dont agree with your mum about nails being a luxury that people only have when they can afford them - if you cannot afford to have your legs waxed then wear trousers or opaque tights - if you cannot afford to have your luxurious nails done then you cant wear gloves so once you have had them, they then become a necessity LOL.

Hi,

I only do Nails at the moment I wouldn't mind doing a beauty course and maybe some hairdressing but i think with hairdressing and nails you do either one not both a few people i have spoken to who are qualified to do both either do one or the other.

hi all,
i do both, i did the 2 year beauty course (which included nail extensions) and im mobile at the moment i tend to just take what i need for each appointment so its not too bad and i am thinking about changing my wax system to phd so its easier to transport. i love doing all the treatments its nice to have a variety, although i am getting into nails more and more, im just trying to get the hang of nail art, all the pictures on this site are really inspiring!

This was one of the things i was worried about. I have still got a lot of learning to do just for the nails and think i will be about 90 before i break even! lol. I know the beauty will mean loads more learning and purchases for that side of things too.

My other concern is waxing each other at college........Dont want to be in a room full of skinny 19 yr olds getting all my stretchmarks and cellulite out for them to practise on! LOL. the eyebrows and things im ok with, its the brazilians etc!!

Sherrie If I was closer I'd be a skinny 19 year old model for you - IN MY DREAMS!!! Long time since I was one of those! A friend of mine does all hair and beauty treatments - but not nail extensions, and she says that peeps will always have waxing done, even if they let other things slip when times are hard! By the way your training could be worse - you could have to do a Las Vegas, how gross is that! Most peeps will have eyebrows waxed, so you could safely add £5 to every client, so if your infills were £15 you would make an extra 33% on each client, or 25% if they are £20.

I do beauty and nails and dont feel that I am spread thinly in either area!
I invest in training in both Beauty and Nails and keep fully up to date in aspects of my work!
I dont think I could solely specialise in one, and I dont feel that this makes me a bad beautician OR a bad Nail Technician!
Having said all that....I did feel soooo damn good today after doing one hell of a perfect file and polish for a lady going to her son's wedding in Wiltshire!

I do luv Nails!!!!!
(love the dosh from waxing tho!!!!........... :o )

Las Vegas?? OMG whats one of those?? ive heard of brazilian and even Hollywood....... :o ........( im so behind the times i think)

Ok the other question, as i dont want to make the same mistake as i did with my initial nail training, would you recommend the college course for beauty or is there the 'creative equivalent' that ive never heard of?

Thanks for all your replies x

Sherrie, interested to see what you get back about the waxing. College courses only seem to do as part of the NVQ 2 in beauty therapy. I have looked into local private courses which run for about 18 hours in total, they state they only have small classes, a max of SIXTEEN, if that's small then what do they consider large!!

A Las Vegas was in either this months Scratch or PN, it's a Hollywood with a diamante design - yeuck, can you imagine being ina club and your diamantes slip!! Bring tears to your eyes!

hi sherrie
im doing part time beauty courses they re called vtct i done depilation vtct, aka waxing, skin tanning vtct now doing my body massage one at braintree college also been to brentwood academy which is a fab place. they r normally once a week for about 12 weeks so try ure local college most of them offer single courses. i think waxing is excellent its so popular everywherexx

Sherrie......Hiya
You should be able to do a waxing course at your local college....Im sure there is a stand alone depilation certification. (could be VTCT but not 100% on that one, but will certainly try me best to find out for you!)
Alternatively.....Ellisons do run courses on a sorta "one day" type of thing!
Personally I dont feel that these "one dayers" prepare you sufficiently for all you will encouter, but then a good many will argue that a 1yr Beauty Specialist Dip will either!!!!
:o
I did the Ellosons short course after several years of waxing with a short break in it to have my gorge son!
I felt for the girls that were new to waxing! I :Scared:

I just had a look at the local colleges website. the 2 yr nvq level 2 in beauty therapy costs about £500 with all the kit etc, but a local adult community college does a stand alone waxing course for about £70. Is waxing the most popular service do you find, or would you go for the whole package, facials etc? I must admit i have never learned pedicure and the nvq does cover that too.......just how to come up with the £500!! lol

Personally I find Waxing, Man and Ped to be my bread and butter, along with nail enhancements...(my public education regarding MMA is working,,,,I think!) :o
I did NVQ 2 Beauty. I dont offer Facials (havent yet found anything I feel comfortable offering......but im working on it!)
I do a lot of facial waxing. A lot of Manicures and Pedicures and also....I find tinting to be a popular treatment too!
careful tho....all those stand alone courses could total more than yer NVQ 2 cost of 500 sponduliks!

I tried doing mobile waxing and found it very hard, you have to wait for it to heat up, then theres the health and safety to think about. I heard that when new legislation comes in , in April, and i may be wrong.. but you have to be operating in a room that is equipt with a sink. Also you have to think about the fact that when ripping off hair there can be a very tiny amount of blood come through the follicule. Which not being funny,, if they are a new client you wont be sure how clean their houses are till you get there... mingin i know but ive seen some sights!!!! And with this in mind i would just rather not take the chance. Better if you can get a mobile couch .The couch should be sprayed with sanitizer because as you are working with minute amounts of blood it is better to be safe than risk them suing you for something that happens through there uncleanliness.

I started last year with a man/ped VTCT course and found that I loved it, so moved on to nail enhancements, nail art and then for a change (because ppl told me that if you loved nails you quite likely wouldnt like much else!) I did a fast track Indian Head massage course and loved it!!!!!

Have now decided to try this out as a new career so this year Im embarking on the NVQ 2yr part time beauty specialist course. I am hoping that it is something that I can do mobile.

Karaxxx

Hi Sherrie, i definately think you should do pedicures, im more than happy to give you a basic understanding of them at the next geek meeting as i have had plenty of experience with them lol!! Have you though about maybe other things as add on services like paraffin wax treatments to work alongside your manicure. As you know i recently done an airbrush tanning course and it has certainly proved to be popular and increasing my clientele x x x x

I do Nails, Beauty therapy and Holistic Therapy. When I first started waxing I tried doing it mobile, but found it was to much trouble to have to carry everything around. So I designated a room in the house did it like a room in a salon would look and now work from home. The most popular services I offer are waxing, tinting, and massage. I think it does pay to be jack of alltrades.
