Got a little lab puppy about 3 weeks ago. Hes lovley sooo cute. His dad was an andrex puppy!
But I'm having major 'hair pulling out' problems with loo training.
I have tried everything, took him out every half hour, spent all day out side, praised him when he went to the loo outside and gave him a treat, told him off when he went indoors and took him to his bed as a punishment. But alas nothing seems to work!!!
I'll take him outside for an hour, he will still come into my house and do it in their, going through kitchen roll like no-ones business!!
Apparently the breeder did no training with him, he used to just get out of his bed and go on the kennel floor, my mum has a choc lab (one for u chocolate!!) and his breeder paper trained him, so all my mum had to do was put the puppy training pads outside the back door, and he would ask to go out!
I swear, my puppy must be all looks and no brains! He just can't grasp it!
I'm feed up of living in a house of pee! (incidently i'm trying to potty train my 2 year old son, ne help and ideas with that would be a ppreciated, he sees the dog go indoors and he claps and cheers and says well done puppy boy. and then does it him self! At the end of my tether!!!)

Any help from people who have been through this puppy/toddler maddness would b much appreciated!!!!

oh heres a pic of the 2 peeing offenders!

They both look soooooo sweet and will be best of friends for sure.
I can remember trying to house train my dog, I use to leave the door open and after putting her the other side of it every time she peed, She seemed to get the message. An idea i picked up when toilet training my son was to put a small ping pong ball in the loo and see if he could hit it when he peed and he loved going to the loo for a pee and game

thanx 4 the tips!
also thanx 4 compliment on little rasscles!:)

puppies dont you just love them.................. i strongly recommened you buy a book called the perfect puppy by gwen bailey its a brilliant source of info ive had labradors all my life currently i have 6 ...... 5 month old pups and a 3 year old and a 2 year old + a border terrier

restrict the rooms the pup can go into keep the pup in a certain room until you can train him. always praise good behaviour but dont respond to the accidents. if you start to see the pup circling call its name distract it and head towards the door keep calling in a nice way until you get pup outside then after the deed paise until you get a tail wagg. if there is an accident use hot biological washing powder to remove the smell otherwise the pup will go back to that area again to do something. you can also get sprays to remove the smell but washing powder works well.
the usual times they want to go are after food after slep and after play but dont stand out in the garden for hours and wait a few mins is all thats needed. try to get the pup to go in the same place and use a word to get the pup to do it............... mine is go and be a good girly............... they all go to the same area.
it does work honestly its time and calmness that wins in the end. my pups from 3 weeks old have been trained to newspaper moving the paper nearer and nearer the door....... they through instinct wont soil there own bed.

just another thought the pup isnt heading towards being a teenager (coming into season) bout 6 month mark as they all go through a change then and can start wetting again?

I find pups need to go wee wees usually about once every hour. So we always made a routine of taking the dog outside every hour, on the hour. Put him right where he did it last, as the smell will prompt him. Stay with him but dont talk much, but as said earlier as you put him down say the command you have chosen e.g. Do wee wees! As soon as you see him squat down wait till hes finished then give massive praise and cuddles.

If your problem is that he does his poos in the house, well there is a way that you can actually make a dog do a poo poos when you want him to. It was taught to me by the famous Barbara Woodhouse but even though it is simple I dont want to put it on here cos everyone will go uuuuuuuuuuugh. It sounds gross but it does work. So if poo poos are your problem then private email me and I will tell you the secret.

Good luck

hi your little one and dog are so cute , as for training the dog we always just watched ours and plonked him outside didnt seem to take that long :) , but !! potty training my little one was the biggest nightmare, have to say i hated it  it drove me nutty i thought the whole weaning /solid food was a nightmare till i tackled that, have to say though once he got the grasp of it he was brill , it just seemed to take forever !! (i bet this isnt cheering u up lol  ) just keep plodding on and one day you will find they both have it sorted , lots of luck love dee

Have to agree with I'm a Star and Valburt here............ the 'danger' times are when they have just woken and after they have just eaten. Get them in a routine so that when they wake you go outside for a few minutes, say your 'word' - I use 'hurry up'! As soon as they have pee'd or poo'd give them huge praise and bring them straight inside again. My Staffy actually squats for a pee now when I say 'hurry up' - even when she doesn't want to do anything! Look out for the puppy sniffing and circling and try to get them outside quickly.

Whatever you do don't punish the puppy for accidents. DO NOT RUB IT'S NOSE IN WHATEVER IT HAS DONE - this kind of training is barbaric and doesn't actually work. Remember also it's no good shouting at the pup half an hour after it's done it's business behind the sofa and you've only just found it - it will wonder what on earth it's getting shouted at for!

Patience and kindness is the key to training a puppy effectively - you want the adult dog to do as you say because it loves you, not because it is afraid of you.

BTW - love the pic! So cute!

cheers 4 all ure help guys:D , have been tryin to take out after meals and sleep, but he's just not playin ball, had 3 poos out side today, must be gettin there, but 2 wees in doors!

I've been using'go wee-wees' thats what we use with my grown up staff, but he was trained when we got him, so didn't have this prob!

Originally tried paper training, got those puppy pads (my mum owns a pet shop in sittingbourne, kent, so get everything free:lol: ) worked 4 a bit but then he thought heek, gonna do it where i want!

Just gonna have to keep going!!!!

very interested in this secret pooing trick! LOL:lol:

hi my lab is 9 months old now i just used puppy pads right next to the back door then moved them outside maybe i was lucky as he seemed to pick it up really quickly. he done a poo once in my living room well i did rub his nose in it and said no and sent him to another room for 10 min he never done it again.

my dog was very bosterous over excited dog he has to be put in his place , he use to chew things my whole house infact his play bitting was bad as well. i smack him on his nose only if ever he does anything wrong he gets sent to the kitchen and i ignore him for 10 mins by doing this he has turned into a different dog and has respect for us all , you have to make it clear your boss xx
hiss a lovely well behaved dog now when he wants attention he will sit down his ears will go back like otter ears and give me his paw to say please and i will stroke himxx

i used to do that too but when i took my boxer to obedience classes i was told never to rub his nose in his mess or to hit him on the nose as that was the most important part of his body, his sense of smell and it could be easily damaged by doing that to him.....the trainer asked me if he sneezed when i used to smack his nose and when i told her he did she went off her head at me and said i had maybe caused some damage already....apparantly when they sneeze after being hit on the nose its because all of their senses in that area have been disturbed and are tingling.......so to this day none of the family have done that to him again.

i take him to a private dog school and i was told to do it as he was play bitting to much and such a difficult dog to control its called the essex school of dog training i smacked him twice on his nose he hasnt bitten since i had to do this as i have a 3 year old daughter and he would play bite her but didnt no his own strength xx

ohh poor pups, u don't think its that hard to hurt them do u!

lucky my pup hasn't needed any telling off as such, just putting out side everytime he has messed, gettin better by the minute thanx to every1's hints and tips

oh i dont hurt him he was an outta control pup i would never harm my ickle dog i love him to bits he had to be told not to bite he was and he doesnt bite anymore you must never smack a dog anywhere else on his body as he will just think you want i fight with him i also hold him to the floor buy his neck and head so he cant move to tell him im in control it doesnt hurt him i brought lotsa books about controling bad dogs and its worked for me xx

Hi Lucky,

I have a couple of websites that may be of use to you - and have also copied the folllowing from the RSPCA website - they all recommend training through repetition and reward rather than punishment and actually frown on the old fashioned 'rub it's nose in it' train of thought.

And as 'I'm a star' recommends - buy 'The Perfect Puppy' by Gwen Bailey, you may get one on Ebay, great book for training. Also as StanleyAnn says, the nose is one of the most important parts of the body to the dog (as well as the tail) and the dog should never be smacked on it - actually, a dog/puppy should never be smacked as punishement - it could come to associate hands with pain and you dont want it snapping at someones hands if they are waving them around in front of the dog.

One of the best people to ask advice from is your vet - not all puppy/dog trainers are reputable and may be part of the 'old school' of teaching. These days a good trainer will never encourage any kind of punishment during training, this is what you should be looking for.

I went to a wonderful lady on The Wirral called Erica Peachey, she was a great trainer and the puppies just flourished under her instruction. Don't forget to take the new pup to puppy classes too to get it properly 'socialised'. Keep us updated on it's progress!

Taken from the RSPCA website......

"The only way that a dog or puppy can be house trained is to consistently reward them for going to the toilet where you want them to go.

This means that not only do you need to go to the garden with them, you also have to supervise them at all times when they are in the house.

The more times your dog has the opportunity to mess in the house, the more he will think it is the correct place to go.

Take him outside into the garden and wait until he needs to go to the toilet. When he starts to relieve himself, say a gentle command such as 'be clean'.

This way, once he has learnt what it means, he will be able to toilet on command. Once he has been, give him loads of praise or a tit bit.

Make sure that you take your dog outside after each feed, drink, play session, and other than that, every two hours during the day.

This way he has much less opportunity to need to go inside the house.

Don’t forget to be consistent with your commands, and your praise.

If you are having problems with house training your dog, it may be due to the fact that you are not able to supervise him at all times. This means he may be repeatedly toileting in the house, and due to the repetition of it, think it is the correct place for him to go.

If he does have an accident in the house, do not punish him.

Move him to another room while you clean up the area. Biological washing solution is one of the best ways to get rid of the smell so that he won’t return to this spot again.

Try to think of accidents as your fault for not taking him out enough.

If at any time you catch him just about to mess, distract him by shouting 'no' and then quickly take him outside and praise him when he performs.

Remember that all dogs vary in the length of time it takes, but you should be prepared for at least 2 weeks of accompanying him to the garden every couple of hours, and of giving consistent praise.

This may take longer depending on the dog and how long the problem has persisted.

The main thing to remember is that dogs learn habits through repetition and reward, so if he is praised each time he messes in the right place, he will soon pick up on what he is supposed to be doing.

Obviously, if he is being allowed the opportunity to frequently mess in the house through being left too long, or not being accompanied to the garden, he will quickly think that this is the correct place to go and it will be harder to change his habit!"

our vet used to do that with oz as he hated being examined......he would grab his collar and hold him down till he gave up struggling.....it supposedly shows the dog who the boss is.

Another good tip if they are being naughty (for when they are young) is to hold them gently by the scruff, put your head near theirs, very gently shake the scruff and growl at them!!! Really - it works! This is what the mother would do if they annoyed her and it is something they will understand more than a smack.

I have a Staffy (as well as a Beardie who was an angel to train) - she was an absolute nightmare when she was young - so snappy (playful) and as soon as your fingers were near her she wanted to chew on them. The way I was taught by my dog trainer (Erica Peachey - she's actually had dog/puppy training books published, is a member of The Association of Pet Behaviour Counsellors and very well known in the 'dog training world') was to take the hand away while saying (loudly) "NO". Distract them from your fingers with a toy and stroke them while they chew on the toy. If they go for the fingers again, take your hand away and say 'no' again. They soon click on that the nice stroking stops when they try to have a crafty chew and if they want the stroking to continue they have to stop nipping. It does take a little while, but it's better than a quick whack. Also, to anyone trying to pick up a few tips from this thread, must just mention never to hit/punish a dog with a rolled up newspaper or stick - it will associate nasty things with these items and you dont want them growing up as a dog who goes for a guy walking down the road with a newspaper in his hand or someone using a walking stick.

HI

Oh god do i sympathise i have a 12wk old chocolate lab and she is a little bugger. Getting there with the toilet training but the biting ! crikey my poor kids! Especially ethan who is 4 cause they are similar size she seems to think she can bite him and knock him over the most!
My husband :o does the rub her nose in it trick! sorry to say. I dont agree with him but its his dog when i have her though i just say very loudly "NAUGTY GIRL" and put her out side. It does seem to be working for me and as i have her most of the time bless!!
She sleeps outside too, in a shed with a dog run so if she keeps biting Ethan i have started putting her away for 15 mins after telling her off! Only been at it today with her so any ideas for the biting?? And the chewing !! god am not going to have anything left! still it is teaching the husband and kids to put their stuff away!!
