Hi

Just want to say Hi first as i am new today!

I have just found a website how to do nails in 30 days where a professionally qualified beauty therapist has put together a course of 5dvd/cd's and sets to learn all the trade secrets of learning to put a set of nails on and the up keep of them. its more of a hands on type course than a theory one and looks good for the money and what you learn. It also shows what to do in lots of real life situations more so than other courses.
Has anyone heard of this? or know if it is any good. If its not can anyone reccomend a home learning course please?

Thanks:confused:

Why do you make a statement like this?

How would you know what is shown or taught in other courses??

Hi Welcome to the site, you will find lots of great information on this site useful hints and tips.

Re Home learn - can you not do an evening course through a college? you will find it a lot better having a tutor to watch over you and advise you rather than a dvd.

Good Luck in what you decide to do.:)

I didnt mean to make it sound like that i just wondered if anyone had heard of this and if anyone has done this or what other home learning courses there are out there that aren't too expensive.

Sorry if i offended.

Thanks Sharon, no can't really due to evening meetings at work.

Thanks though

Well I wasn't offended just thought it was odd that one would be able to make a statement like that if they hadn't ever taken a course before.

Having been head of a number of nail training academies for years ... Academies that have won awards for their excellent training .. infact the only nail academies that have ever won an industry award for training .. I know that in the case of said academies, your statement was incorrect.

Anyway, to your Question ... Essential Nails run a home learn course which is established and has a reputation as the first home learn course and has been fairly successful.

I myself believe that it is a start, but in no way will you be fully trained at the end of a home learn course. You will have to go on learning and you will have to be assessed by someone at some time as to your level of skill.

All GOOD training costs money. This is a profession you are learning and a skill. If you start cheap you will just go on and on and it will add up and up till its not cheap anymore. Most here on the site who started with cheap andpoor training wish they had gone to better training establishments RIGHT FROM THE START.

What about sats, my VTCT ran sat mornings 9 to 1 it was only 20 weeks, its worth looking into if you are going to be serious about nails. by doing a college course you will at least get a qualification out of it and great experance as you have to work on paying clients to pass your course.

Good luck.

For those who do home learn, Essential Nails seems to be by far the most popular and although it will take extra training on top of it to be a high quality technician, it is a good starting base if you have no time for other courses at present.

If I were you tho, I would be a little suspicious of any course that markets itself as 'learn in 30 days' as with home learn courses this seems completely not plausible as home learn can take a little longer to acheive as you are doing your own trial and error without a tutor.

Home learn is an option, but just be aware there are lots and lots of companies out there willing to take your money when you will not be able to gain insurance afterwards to work on clients.

I know that the with essential nails course you can obtain insurance with a pass, but as for any of the others I just don't know, and many are willing to lie to you.

hi- just wanted to add that really speed isn t of the essence. As any tech will tell you its all practice- so 30 days is very dependant on the individual.Plus imho not the best way the adertise a course.

Also theory is a very good thing. You may learn how to put the enhancement on in that course but is it on correctly if you do not know how a nail is built or "works"? If a customer came to you will a nail problem how would you know how to deal with it if you have only been taught how to put the enhancement on.

There are many geeks who will tell you the problems they have had with clients coming to them after enchancements have gone VERY wrong.

Hi, Welcome to the site, There are loads of threads on here about training/home learning courses. Use the search button at the top and have a look, GOOD LUCK with whatever you decide.

Hi there. I'm currently doing my Manicure and Pedicure VTCT and taking an essential nails course to get a head start on the nail enhancement course I will take at college later in the year.

I have to say though, some of the basic techniques taught on the EN course completely contradict what my tutor taught me. For example on filing techniques. And at no time on the EN course do you learn about such things as contra-indications. That was the first thing we learnt on our college course. The importance of such issues like cleanliness and sanitation etc was only very briefly touched upon too. I don't think the Essential Nails course in anywhere near complete enough to study solely. I wouldn't really even suggest it as an intro either because surely such things like nail disorders and health and safety should be discussed before you even pick up a nail file?? I don't know. I think the EN courses are popular because they contain all the fun bits, not necessarily the important bits!!

Oh I'm new here and probably talking tosh but I thought I'd contribute!

Hi im also taking en home course am already trained in manicure and ped and i have disagree with you a little the manual covers santation and cleanliness both in the salon and personal..it also gives contra indications with photos and explanations! it won,t be as indepth as college as you know they cover every detail but college is a much higher level. But i think it is an excellent starting point and they give you as much advice as you want

Im doing Essential Nails Gel Course at the moment and I like it! I cannot attend classes right now but Im planning in future though.
I want to learn basics with Essential Nails and then find classes or tutors for some advanced training.
I have already done my first set of gels on my friend and Im thrilled to bits (I know, I know she is my little guinea pig:lol:) I just wanted to see how I will do on real person.

Welcome...I don't think you are talking tosh at all - I have to say I wholeheartedly agree. I started my career in nails with Essential Nails, and it is only after I have gone onto training academies such as Geeg has mentioned above, with industry leaders such as Creative and Bio Sculpture that I have since found out quite how basic and inadequate my education from EN was to become a successful salon technician.

The course content from Essential Nails on for example, Hygiene and Safety, at the time I did it, was sadly very basic, lacking and in some cases contradictory to the Habia Code of Conduct for Nail Services, which gives the industry standard recommendations for H&S. It also did not give the correct recommendations for some contra-indications and its terminology left a lot to be desired.

That said....it gave me two things for which I will be forever grateful....one my nail trainer. He is patient, always on time for his appointments and never grumbles when I want to try something new (granted they can be bought elsewhere, but I still remain grateful for the kit and instruction in using it) and two, hand in hand with this website....pure passion to go on and get a more in depth education elsewhere.

I turned out quite good nails right from the start with my EN course, but otherwise I wasn't truly equipped to go out and offer my services. As long as your eyes are open to this, as others have said, its a start...but a basic one!

hi hnu i did my first set and they fell off !

My first set seems to be doing fine ... I didnt do tips (just overlay) as my friend got quite long nails but very thin ones.
I did an overlay and she wears them already for a week - so far no problems ... *knocking on the wood*

I myself have been researching into various different courses - with the use of this site and researching training academies. I did look at doing the essential nails course first off but in the end after much research decided to do the creative nail 5 day foundation course and use my holidays to do this in my own time. Is this maybe an option for you?

Good luck with whatever you decide! Oh and welcome to the site!

Hi Honey
Sent you a pm.
Whatever you decide to do, ensure you have a nail trainer it is the best training tool any nail artist can have. I have had mine for 9 years and I still use it.

hi I am new to here only joined yesterday but I can tell you I did a home nail course with essential nails and that was nearly four yrs ago and I am able to do nails but I would not really recommened it as the money you spend on this course I feel is wasted as I am now looking into doing a conversion course in creative or entity as I struggle with stuff still . See the problem I have found is because you basically teach yourself you never know if what you are doing is right and I have learnt so much from friend and people I work with that have done a creative course , so at the end of the day it is compleatly your decision but I really wish I had spent that money on a course were someone can help you and see what you are doing. best of luck . dannie xxxx
