Hi girls well since my last post about the hair extension course I have had the dreaded meeting with my boss and she has told me ‘I can no longer guarantee you job as you cant guarantee me your hands’ I spoke to the job center for advice about 3 weeks ago as I knew this was coming and they said within hairdressing Dermatitis falls into the criteria of a Disability because it ticks the boxes for effecting your day to day life and ability to complete you job.
This means my boss has an obligation of care over me, to cover this she offered me a receptionist position but vie been hairdressing for 7 years I cant stand behind a desk all day watching other people do my clients and the job I love!

I’m not sure what to do, because its an illness as such that’s stopping me from working I may look into funding for beauty training so I can stay within the industry I’m just gutted to say the least!

As anyone got any advice or been through something similar and can help, I only work part time as I have a two year old and the thought of re training is very scary right now
:irked:

Hi

Im not a hairdresser (yet!) but have you thought about maybe going into teaching hairdressing?

You would need teaching quals but someone who has several years experience and is passionate about hairdressing might be a good option?

Good luck x

Is there a particular thing that sets of your dermatitis? (I get it from sweaty rubber gloves when coloring so avoid wearing them - H&S be damned) :p

Have you been to your GP and got a specialist dermatology appt?

Going into the 'beauty industry' - massage oils/facials/pedicures etc are all at risk procedures...

You could do bridal hair, make up, nails and 'pamper party' type stuff - most of that is not wet work (if that is what sets it off)? (Didnt read your previous post) but as an extensionist you would have reduced risks too? Think the teaching idea is fab...

You may also find, it you give your hands a good rest, you will be able to do 'light' wet work as long as you are careful. I dont know how long you have suffered but I have also been told, your hands can 'harden' up! (not sure myself)

Good luck

I cant use wella colours, loreal shampoo and conditioners or anything tigi, goldwell is on my list too and also ghd products, and all Regis products and shampoo and conditioners all of these set my hands of to a point where it makes them itch, so I scratch, the dry, crack and bleed!

I'll never forget one Christmas eve after a mad Christmas period I sat with my hands in a bowl of cold water just to try and numb the pain, take the swelling down and clean the blood off :( its not nice but it's something you can learn to deal with when you find what triggers it! This is also another reason I use all matrix products! Never have a problem with them x

Mines the same Wella
Colours and label m products!!
Makes my hands so sore :(

Xx

You really have my sympathy, as I have seen two hairdressers have to give up the job they love because of dermatitis.
Beware that you may find beauty exactly the same, therapists hands are in products a lot of the time too, and your skin may now be super sensitised.

Had all the tests done came back inconclusive, lOREAL INOA I can't go near I ended up in hospital due to reaction, same with the shampoo, even water some times I have a 2 year old cant even take her swimming, got to the point I wash my hair in the shower with gloves on and yup even the gloves make it worse!!!! Life's a biiiiiatch at times
