Hey guys!

I know a few of you say that home courses are not very good but its my only option.

I really would love to do some home courses espesh make-up course i was wondering if anyone think this would be good, i will only take a course which is accredeted, and was wondering if anyone can recommend a really good one?

thanks

why dont you save your money and get some books from the library?

then when you can get to college you'll have a head start on everyone else.

Can't see how you can learn make-up to insurance level from a home-learning course myself.

I have done a correspondence course in the past and
(a) it was a load of rubbish
(b) I would have got more knowledge from 2 library books
(c) it didn't give me the confidence to do anything with the 'so-called' knowledge
(d) the insurance companies wouldn't touch it although the correspondence course people offered to 'introduce' me to an insurer (yeh right!).

So, it sounds like you have a huge desire to get into this as a career but circumstances are preventing you from attending a proper course in college. Why not do some research via library books and the internet, and of course salon geek and practice at home. but don't waste your money on correspondence courses please, wait until your circumstances change.

Hey,

I have personal reasons why i cant go college along with no gcse's so due to personal problems its impossible 4 me to go college.

Is there any other option for me to do make-up ? :irked:

will get some books tho hippy chick

You know Rebekah, you are young and very enthusiastic and I am sure that you will get to where you want to go.

But, you will need to get some form of formal education if you want to be the best therapist that you can possibly be.

Please, make an appointment at the college to see if they can advise you on how to get this education so that you can then start your beauty therapy career.

They may get you to do a few GCSE;s together or something called an ACCESS course where you do a combination of courses like numeracy and literacy together. You may even be able to do some beauty therapy courses alongside your formal education.

You have time on your hands, and I don;t know why you didn't complete your education at school to get your GCSEs but maybe college life will suit you better than school.

Hi Hun,
I am booked on a make up course with NSI in Manchester, it is £180 + vat, you get a make up kit and brushes. A certificate is awarded at the end if you prove to be competent in what they have taught you. then you can progress to more advanced make up courses etc. Have a look at their website Home - Nail Systems International (UK) plus there will be other companies that do similar courses. Good luck lol x

opps! sorry Rebekah,
my answer above didn't take into consideration your last answer. Sorry xxx

Thats ok hippy

Thanks pinkfloss :) shall go check that out now lol xx

i'd just like to say that yes college is a good starting point

BUT....

I would also consider other courses which give you a qualification that will allow to get insurance .
i'n my level 2 cosmetic makeup VTCT at college there is alot of unhappy peeps cause of how we are being taught and how little we are.
maybe it's just my tutor and college but when i asked about makeup courses on here quite a few geeks did say the college course wasn't worth it as they didn't learn much.

like i've said do your searching well, i don't think you can learn at home what is needed to get insurance if you could then we would all be makeup artists from the moment we started using makeup.

if we want to be called a professional beauty therapist then i believe we should learn professionally and carry insurance.

Just to add to this, I have found home courses to be very expensive when compared to places like NSI and my nail training with NSI was first class, they are still at the end of the phone when I have a question and I have no school exams either:hug: Industry training doesn't need GCSE's it needs enthusiasm. But unlike school no one will tell you the answers you have to do your own research, but I find that I learn a lot of other things along the way while getting side tracked:lol:

I'm going along with you in my college course i didn't learn much on make up and had to do another course to get to the standared that i wanted to be at. The make up artist that i trained with has been on the bbc and do back stage make up on celebs and she told me that the make up application that they had learnt me at college was wrong. xxx

Hi
How about joining Mary Kay?
This way you can learn from your team leader how to do make up.
Plus you will start using fab products.

Hi - you could also try Virgin Vie or Avon, aswell as Mary Kay. They give some great training and you can buy their kits really cheaply.
I don't know how you will stand insurance wise for practising on the public.
When I was with Virgin I think I paid a £25 one off fee for public liability insurance through them which basically insured me against anything going wrong or damage to the clients property. Don't know if they still do that - but it could be worth checking it out.
And don't give up on college. Just because you don't have GCSC's doesn't mean you can't apply. I'm currently studying an Adult Education Beauty Specialist ITEC course and one of the ladies studying with me didn't have any qualifications but she was allowed to join. I think they ask for GCSE's because they want reassurance that you are able to read and write and basically be able to learn as there is a lot of theory. You shouldn't let that put you off!!! Just ask, you never know - and a real college course would be much more worth while.
Wishing you all the best in whatever you decide XXXXX

Hiya

I did a course with the London Make-up Academy. It cost about £3500 plus my kit on top but it was one of the best courses i have been on. Its in the evenings in central london, so people could still keep the day job.

What i learnt was invaluable. We were taught high fashion make up, editorial and advitorial looks.

My tutors were great as they have had a lot of experience in this field. One of my tutors was the chief artist for moulin rough, star wars etc. My other tutor does Paris Hiltons nails!

I have had so much work from this! I have worked with Blue Peter, Arcadia etc. I am still in the process of doing my portfolio cos now i am a therapist im trying to do both!

I know its a lot of money and hard work as the make up industry is so competitive! But you just have to stand out with your style!

Hi, i am a Virgin Vie consultant and i have learnt so much from the training they give you . I would recommend it to anyone who cant get to cokkege as you get hands on training and experience whilst making money (i.e selling) at the same time!! I am due to go on my bridal training in March which i am so excited about because this means i can take my business one step further and learn so many new techniques!!

I would like to get some professional training as well but i am loving this so much i may just stick to Virgin!! xx
