Hello everyone,

I have tons of questions im hoping someone can help with!!
I work full time mon-fri 9-5 and im at college studying hairdressing 2 evenings and all day Saturdays! I really like hairdressing but I love all of the hairup/bridal hair alot more then the cutting and colouring!
I would really like to start my own business doing bridal hair and makeup, and possibly get into some tv and film work.
I want to learn makeup soo much! I have spent tons of money on books and ive been teaching myself bits and watching loads of online tutorials!
I just want to know what is the best way of learning the makeup?

My local college runs an NVQ level 2 course which I can pick up in Jan (when hopefully most of my hairdressing will be completed)
I no quite a few of you guys must of studied makeup! So I reallly want your opinions!!
Is it best to do an NVQ at college or do a specialised course?

Has anyone done an NVQ in makeup? Did you feel you learnt enough from it?

I found a short course at the London College of Fashion which looks brilliant! (its the same place where the Jimmy Choo creator studied!) its 3 days long and you get no qualification from it after.
Is there anyway of getting insurance from doing this?

Ive looked at loads of courses on here but they seem to be crazily priced! I really dont want to spend like 5 grand on a course it seems crazy!!
Is there any courses anyone can recommend?

I really want to start my own business and i thought having your own business is basically about selling yourself and your services.. So ive decided i would really like to do some courses abroad so I can say studied makeup in Paris and New York..
If I do courses abroad will I get the relevent insurance here?

Ok im done with the questions for now!! If anyone can help I would really really appriciate it!!!

thanks!

Christie :) xx

hey - wow thats a lot of questions.

i have signed up for foundation and combined make-up at the academy of freelance make-up in london, this runs at weekends, for 6 weekends from nov-dec. it cost 2400 and i think if u wanna make a career from it u really need the specialised training and the help getting a portfolio up and running. the course covers day, evening, bridal, then fashion, black and white, ethnic skins, glamour, avant garde, catwalk, corrective, 1920's, 1950' and with this course one of the days is spent styling a photoshoot were u do make-up and styling on professional models, using a professional photographer and u get to keep the images on a disc, u also get a 22 piece brush set and help with putting a kit together.

have a look at their website domain for sale - they have some good industry connections too.

my friend did a make up course at her local college which only covered day, evening and bridal and i think she is struggling to impress people as their are a lot of good serious make up artists who have trained in london.

Hiya, how did you get on with this course I am thinking about doing the foundation/advanced. Is it worth the money?
I live in leeds so it is a long way and I need to make sure it's worth it! I have done nvq level 2 but I'm not that impressed with it- do you feel confident in what your doing now?
Any info would be really helpfull thanks!

Hiya, which did you decide? What advice do you have for someone in the same situation? x

Which course in Leeds had you previously done? Im going to Leeds city college in sept, used to be at Thomas Danby, but its at a new site. Dont know which course to do for the best? x

Get a qualification (nvq) because this is valuable. You can always do further training on top of this qualification :)

Have you tried looking for a level 3 diploma course in any colleges in your area? I did a level 2 VRQ in Hair and Makeup last year, and while it was great for hair it taught me very little in makeup.... there is no way I would have been ready to start up at that point.
But this year I have just completed a Level 3 Diploma in Theatrical Special Effects Hair and Media Makeup, which was brilliant! You go through everything from your special fx (though it is mostly at theatre level, but some colleges offer a level 4 to progress to for film and tv effects), period makeup, character creation, fantasy makeup, high fashion, eyelash and eyebrow treatments, bridal, black and white photography makeup etc etc. I also got a nice amount of industry experience and portfolio images in my time there.
And then afterwards if you wish you can progress onto uni courses in specialist makeup. I however am like you and prefer the bridal side of things, so I'm still on the fence as to what to do next.
But whatever you do, good luck!

I agree with laurakate qualifications are invaluable and whether you study here or a abroad with a qualification you should be able to get insurance anywhere with any provider. Upskill courses can be done once the qual is completed for more specialist techiniques. I can highly recommend Illamasqua School of Make-Up for progression course especially for you 'Bridal and Beyond' (in case you don't know about Illamasqua - Vivienne Westward's son is the co-founder)
Good luck :)

I'm glad you posted this because I'm looking at doing level 3 makeup artistry diploma at my local college. It doesn't cover bald caps and wigs but I think it covers stage make up like wounds and stuff. My interest is more in the theatre side of things (hobby rather than as a career) so I'm thinking about doing the course but it's a bit of a drive to the college.

Did you find that for everyday you went in, you felt that you gained something from having done the journey there? Strange question maybe but I'm anxious that the pace of course may be slow due to it being full time and for 16 plus?

Hi, I am also looking at doing a bridal/specialist make up course, but I don't have any qualification to start with apart from a one day course I did (Bridal make up) with a company call Top Talons in Chesterfield, Derbyshire. I was told that this was all I needed to get insurance and start my own business, but I'm not so sure and would just like to do something more to build up my portfolio. Does anyone recommend anything? I have also done the same thing with Bridal hair but am more confident with that and would like to also do a course in eyelash application and possibly other things like waxing, massage ect.
