I am wondering how I can get around this problem...

I went self employed last April and opened my own small beauty salon, and so far everything is going really well, but I wish i were getting more bookings for make-up.

I have quite a lot of experience in bridal and special occasion makeup and am more than confident, but my problem is that all my previous work was done whilst working for somebodyelse in a large salon, therefore I have no records or photographic evidence of my handy work...

I want to launch a new bridal make up website as there is currently a gap in the market in my area... but i just know people are going to ask to see previous work...

any help and suggestions much appreciated xo

Maybe you could ask friends to model for you? You could get some of your married friends to wear their wedding dress for a "mock" wedding shoot for example?

thanks ruth :)

anybodyelse got any ideas?

what did you other make up artists do when you first set up business?

i was working in a clothing and handbag store before i started doing make-up and beauty on the side, and around christmas time, i set up a box where i got people to enter a free prize draw. every year before christmas the high street did a special late night shopping thing and each shop does something different, so i offered free make-overs for people who entered the draw, i picked 5 "lucky" winners of all ages, and they were thrilled, and since then they come back all the time and told all their friends. it was a great way of spreading the word and making things exciting aswell as getting practice, i took their pictures and they were the first to go into my portfolio :)

I would say you need to do what the others above sugested but also get in touch with a friendly photographer to make you work really stand out.
This does not need to cost any money as there are photographers out there who are only too willing to have a make up artist on a shoot. This arrangement is time for prints (or web images).

Good idea; you could try websites such as Net-Model.com - Online portfolios for Models, Photographers, Agencies, and Stylists. and How To Become A Model - Modeling Portfolios - Fashion, Glamour and Photographic Models where you can register as an MUA/stylist and there are often advertisements for shoots posted on there where they need MUAs for TFP (time for prints) work.

Find hair salons near you that enter the Loreal Colour Trophey each year (deadline soon approaching) and offer to do the makeup in exchange for prints/use of image on your website.

Another good site is www.modelmayhem.com , look for people in your area who need a make up artist and offer your services in exchange for prints. Good luck x
