Hi,

I have lots of red and purple very noticeable scars on the inside of my forearms from years of mental illness episodes in which I self harm.
I usually wear long sleeves to hide them, but I am going abroad with my partner and 5 year old son in August and would love to be able to wear short sleeves in the hot weather without worrying people will notice my scars.
My Mum has suggested I get some make up to disguise them and I was hoping that someone could point me in the direction of a good brand, a salon that can match skin tone and sells camouflage make up or a class or something that teaches how to do it.
I live in Redditch so can easily get anywhere in the midlands, I also go to Manchester quite a lot and my partner is from the south east and would happily take me to London area if necessary.

I would be really grateful for any help with this, thank you, Claire.

Have you thought about a brand that is designed to cover tattoos. As by the sounds of it the colour you want to cover up may be similar to tattoos. tattoo secret is one and rio skin camouflage. You could look into a colour correcting palette such as kyolan dermacolor ,w7 camouflage kit. Also dermablend is meant to be good. I would look at in depth reviews on these products if you consider buying any and I would also look at the products on a website called make up alley. You could also find reviews on you tube as well.

Dermablend is supposed to be amazing I haven't tried it but they have a video where they have covered all the tattoos on the most tattooed man in the world and you couldn't tell he had a single tattoo it looked amazing! They also say their make up covers up scars. I think you can get a sample of their website to try out and test the colour. I'm not sure where stocks it but if you find a stockist go in and get a colour match and see if they'll put some on and show you how to cover your scars x I hope you find something x

Thanks both of you I'll check out your suggestions now and have a look on youtube for application advice. They are more tattoo coloured than usual old scars, I think because I am so pale and the skin is super damaged x

Dermablend definitely-- it's waterproof once set with their powder and specially designed for body as well as face. You can go to doctor as be referred so you can be colour matched and shown how to apply correctly too x

Hi Claire, I am a professional make up artist and skin specialist. I also recommend Dermablend. Also, if your scars are fairly 'young' as in less than a year or two old, or still red or purple, you might be lucky and get them to fade a bit (which they will to a certain extent, in time anyway, so don't worry too much), if you use high iu (or strength) vitamin e oil. You can get this from health shops and is the one in capsules that you would take as a supplement. Or use some pure, natural cold pressed wheatgerm oil to moisturise every day or so. It has lots of vit e in it. If you would like some advice or help learning how to apply your camouflage make up I live on the borders of North London and South Herts. Feel free to message me and let me know if you'd like to come and I'll help you. I'm sure you'll have a lovely time on holiday, so don't worry too much about your arms, I am sure you notice the issue much more than anyone else will. Have a lovely time in August.

Thanks Lilly, I have had a look at the dermablend website it advises either the corrective stick or the body foundation with the setting powder, I use bio oil but will pick some vitamin e oil up and use that instead. I will ask my partner which days he has off over the next couple of weeks and pm you to see if you are available as I would prefer to apply correctly than bodge it. Thank you so much, I will pm you tomorrow - good night xx

The cover cream or the tattoo make up? X

If marks are purple wish try a peach colour corrector underneath, if more blue then a yellow based corrector, then cover cream to conceal. Think opposites on the colour wheel - they cancel each other out xx

This is really helpful, thank you xx

Veil do sample packs in handy blister packs (like tablets) for about £10.

Worth getting before committing to a product as camouflage cover creams are expensive

Hi Claire, ok, I look forward to hearing from you again. I have replied to your message, I just saw it. Try a natural oil rather than Bio Oil. Bio Oil is mainly liquid parrafin, which doesn't do anything for scarring or for the skin for that matter. Makes me cross how they advertise it to give the impression it's natural and helps scarring, it doesn't. Try natural sweet almond oil with 20 percent wheatgerm oil in it, you'll get a much nicer result on skin, and it''ll be better for you too! I can advise on the oils if you want too, I actually blend them for my brand!

Hi Lilly,
I've just replied to your message and sent you a text, I will try and find some natural sweet almond oil with wheatgerm oil in it - I really thought I was doing good with bio oil! And perhaps I could then get some oil from you at my appointment?
I look forward to hearing from you, Claire x

Hi Claire,

You would be eligible for free treatment with Changing Faces.

A Skin Camouflage professional will see you in a clinic, assess you, apply skin camouflage & teach you techniques.

They will then give you a GP prescription for specialist products.

Hope this helps :)

Dermacol.... Seen this foundation/ cream everywhere on Instagram for covering scars/redness and even tattoos x
