Greetings Everyone

I qualified as a Nail Tech about a month ago with my wife. :green:

I am a therapist already (Reflexology, Reiki, Crystals and other related things) and have not met with much resistance seeing female clients. As my wife and I are both qualified in similar things we can offer a choice of male or female therapists.

However, I just wondered what the general opinion of male Nail Techs are in the beuaty world. Would you be bothered if your tech was male? Wouold you expect them to wear theie products (at the moment I have UV Acrylic Tips on as I want to show them to prospective clients).

Thanks guys

I think I would be more bothered by a male tech that wore enhancements than by a male tech who did not.

The fact of using a male tech makes no earthly difference to me at all ...straight or gay or whatever if they are good, but males with enhancements? ... that just looks wrong to me. Freaky !! Only my opinion.

P:S: Welcome to the site but please fill in your profile

We are a pretty close and friendly bunch here and we like to know a bit about a person, what they use, their experience etc etc.

Do a search on here on the subject of male techs or male therapists and you will find that it is very much the norm,
and 99% of people don't care which sex you are as long as you are good at what you do,
we have some very successful and famous male nail techs on this site,

welcome to salongeek

It would not bother me in the slightest, so long as the male in question was as passionate about nails as I am, iygwim, ha ha. I would second geeg though in saying a male tech wearing enhancments is a bit weird, (my opinion) Wouldnt it be better to say keep your hands well groomed and manicured, and have a stand of nails pre made you can have on your desk, to show to clients.

I did not see your nails so will skip commenting that :green: but generaly speaking, have to agree that well manicured hands would be just enough, and by that I mean - if you're good at what you do, you really don't have to be a walking advertisement like we females often are.

My hairdresser is male, and doesn't have much hair on his head, and yet, he is the only one I would ever let touch my hair (that goes down in thick curles almost to my waist), and I travel far to his salon, and I mean far. So hope this little comparison helped :green:

Hi & welcome to the site

Im currently learning the ways of the Nail Tech & am male ( I think lol) I have NEVER had a any clients refuse a treatment from me because im a lad in fact its more of a benifit. Think of all the male hair stylists & most women now prefer men doing their hair if given the choice. It dont matter if your boy, girl martian or all three as long as you are a good tech then thats all that clients care about. & just for the record NO I dont wear enhancements cant stand them on me lol. Love doing nails but thats far enough for me xx

P.S have a look at Carl's site he's a lad & VERY GOOD www.nailzoo.com

HTH

i wouldnt mind at all having a male tech as long as he was good at his job.

i think an imaculate manicure on a man looks very classy.
however i wouldnt mind seeing enhancements on male nail techs but i think that maybe a natural style might be better than anything too flamboyant.

that really is just convention speaking though isnt it as clients wouldnt think twice about female nail techs having extravagant nails.

i actually sometimes envy the male techs because people generally dont 'expect' them to have enhancements on whereas they do for female techs. and it can become a bit of a chore when you do nails all day every day and still have to do your own.

Just a liddle thing to add here,

the creator of this very site:
Samuel Sweet is a fella, and his nails are a bit more than half decent (like really really really lovely),
so yeh, theres nothing wrong with being a male tech,
but like Geeg, I dont like enhancements on men.
But nice, groomed smart nails on a man is very nice.

It would not bothere me on iota a man doing enhancements...it would also not bother me if a man was wearing enhancements on,as long as he was a good technician...i have seen it all:green:...but yes please fill in your profile...i always look to see that, and it helps!

I'm a bloke...... hahahahaha
I do nails, but I don't wear them, they hurt when you break them (clients don't seem to think so).
If a guy was to wear nails, they would have to appear "perfect", that's the only way to get away with it.

Some of the best in the industry are male.:)

I remember going to one of the trade shows and saw a few of the male technicians doing demos and wearing nails - yuck!

I definatley don't think you need to wear nails yourself.

I once put an overlay on two of my nails just to deal with lifting issues, but no one could tell. In face the only difference I could tell was the different sound they made when tapped on a table! Being able to wear nails yourself is definately an advantage female techs have over males in terms of gaining experience and overcoming problems.

I do have a few drag queens who wear nails during competitions or busy times. Anything to keep them from DIY "Lee press-ons" ripped off at 3 am:rolleyes: I just keep them natural and after getting them taped, painted and dressed, polish them to match the costume. Talk about niche market!

I had a male tech for years and honestly never thought twice about it

I'm with everyone else...as long as your works speaks for itself, gender doesn't matter. Although, I do live in a small town, and it may have more of an effect here than larger cities. But to be honest with you, sometimes I wish I were a guy at my job! I hate wearing enhancements...I'm the worst picker. I keep my nails short with nothing on them, just nicely kept up. And I'm tired of hearing "You do nails...why don't you do your own?!" Because I don't have the time and I don't want to worry about messing my own nails up while doing a client's. I'd say take advantage of the fact you WON'T be expected to wear them :p

Good luck!

I wouldnt care if a guy was doing my nails atall,

I dont think you need to wear them yourself though. Unless you want to of course. x

Everyone has their own thoughts, I would never wear long or french nails but I have done an overlay on my natural nails (not buffed so they are matt finish) and I like it. I started to do my nails to see the wear of the product for myself. But now I use it on my thumb which cracks vertically at the free edge and it looks very natural. I would never put an enhancement on me that I put on my clients.

What kind of enhancements do you put on your nails? I don't think its weird to see it. I am open minded and in the mindset that "you are who you are" if others dont like the look, its their opinion but I would never change myself because of it.

To be upfront, I am a gay guy and if I worried about others thoughts I would be living a very sorry life. (this is not an attack on the other posts btw).

Great thread! very interesting to see others views and nice not to see yet another product Vs product thread which I find very boring.

We all find it boring, but you know what?? You don't have to read them.

When folks are new they always ask product questions and thank God they can ask here on the nailgeek and maybe some can avoid the same difficulties others have fallen into because they had nowhere to go to ask questions before choosing training or products.

I think it's great that there are male nail techs out there, this would not bother me at all having nails done by a man, afterall I definately prefer to get my hair cut by a man.
And IMO, you wouldn't have to wear enhancements either

WOO HOO, I put a sculptured nail on me today.
I think it looks quite girly for a mans nail (or course I extended the nailbed quite a bit)
( I must be doing something right)

Hi, welcome to SalonGeek!

It wouldnt bother me at all by having my nails done by a male tech. I think it would be quite nice actually! Agree with the others who said about not wearing enhancements, I think it would just look wierd! lol Natural nail overlays like Stephen said would be ok or well manicured hands xx
