have tried to see if this has been mentioned before, still getting used to the format of the site, sorry if its being repetititve....
we were never taught how to massage a bum, i have been reading many threads here with ppl saying it is a shame not to have it done, and the amount of tension held in the buttocks is unreal, wondering if ppl could advise, do you generally just knead, effleurage, are there particular pointss etc???

yummy bummy

I think it would be hard to describe without showing you! I make sure the majority of the movements are from the outer side to inner side, working the muscle upwards and in or I hold the towel firmly over the middle to do outward movements! If I do tapotement I cover the buttocks completely with the towel.

Like Weezie I work from the outside in, working towards the sacrum. I generally start working on the sacrum, then on each buttock with alternate hand stroking, then some knuckling & kneading, then if indicated I do a lot of work on the piriformis with some stretches to get deeper. At the end of the massage I tend to also do some thumb drainage & knuckling to both buttocks when I'm standing at the head end of the couch.

this is a great help thanks kindly, will be sure to try on next willing client!!!!

I don't mean to cause offense, and mean in the nicest possible way, but if you haven't been trained to do it, I can't help feeling that your massage course was lacking. What about doing a massage workshop that concentrates on areas and techniques your course didn't cover? You shouldn't really be practising on clients - they are paying for your expertise.

i totally understand what you mean , i have massaged the glueteals before, i have done many a workshop, cimi, indian head, swedish, aromatherpay, baby and infant, post partum, tension massage, onsite massage just would not be confident to include it in a routine with a regular relaxation massage if you know what i mean, uncertain of how to approach it when for years have been doing their massages ommitting this area!!
bt yes i agree it would not be right to try it on any client, particular a guinea pig friend to start!!!
thanks a mill, glad that people actually take time to say not to lunge straight into a treatment uncertain, many a spa or clinic i have wored in the owner would insist that we go in uncertified or unconfident. its unreal
thanks guys, will be massaging friend bums allweekend now!!
