Hello! I’ve heard along of good things about matrix color and toners. I’m going to do a balayage and I’d like to know how to use the matrix toner. What developer do I mix it with? Do I put it all over the head?

Matrix toners are in their colour sync range. These are standard demi colour that get mixed with their own developer (2.7%, very important to use the matrix developer). They are used as normal demis, could be applied all over with a nozzle bottle or bowl and brush, they are exactly same consistency as permanent colour if not a tiny bit runnier. I usually tone visually and remove as soon as target colour is achieved.
SPN Neutral based
SPA Ash based
SPV Violet based
SPM Mocha based
SPGV Gold violet based
10P is also good, a bit more concentrated violet in it.

They also do a range in colour sync of
Sheer acidic toners (Ash, nude, steel, violet, brunette matte, brunette ash, brunette mocha)
5 minute fast acidic toners (Anti yellow, anti red, anti brass)

I'd suggest doing some research and matrix education into their colour line before jumping in with these.

My go to toner has always been SPV and 10P for nuetralising yellow after lightening, however one of the geeks recently introduced me to Goldwell Colourance 10V. Now if you want a nice cool result after lightening this is out of this world! Definitely will be my choice for clients who really want a cool ashy blonde. It's runnier than permanent colour so I'd use a nozzle bottle.

😊

I’m going to do a balayage on a friend I have the toner. Am I mixing it with 20 volume and putting it all over the hair?

I’m a student still I’ve used Lanza and chi at school but one of my instructors told me matrix is good and she uses that for her clients

Really? No way should you use 20 vol with matrix colour sync. It's a specialised 2.7% developer designed for colour sync only. And the toner goes on the lightened pieces. Two bits of advice:
1) As you're obviously still in training and unsure about this basic colour knowledge, I would not be doing your friends hair without supervision of a trained hairdresser. If you don't know even this then you could potentially be running into all sorts of problems, especially with something like balyage!
2) Pick a colour line you know and stick with it. I use Matrix because it's the line I've used from day one. I've had multiple training days on it besides 2 years of supervised practice with it at college by tutors who were experienced with it. I use Goldwell as back up but even then that's because I've had some experiences of using it when I worked in a salon. To be honest even though I know a bit about goldwell even with my colour theory knowledge supporting me I'm still nervous using it because it's not my main line. As a hairdresser you need to know your colour line inside out, with full comprehension of how they will react with different kinds of hair.

I'm sure you mean well and I realise you do need to practice, but something like that needs to be supervised. All the best ☺

Thank you for your advice. I am about to graduate and fixing to take my test for my license. I have been doing this for a year now and I do know how to do a balayage, highlights any color. It is just the matrix line I am not familiar with. I’ve worked with Chi Lanza and wella just not matrix. But again thanks for your help. Good day

Sorry if I came over a bit harsh, I didn't mean to offend, sorry. I think I could have put that more kindly, my bad. ☺ All the best with your friend's hair and for taking your last exams ☺
