Hi,

I'm just about to start this medication for psoriatic arthritis and psoriasis, and I was wondering if it will effect my nails in anyway, I've not seen my consultant yet just had a phonecall off the nurse, it's a corn of radiotherapy but I will be on a much lower dose and taking it one day a week.

My specialist nurse told me NOT to google it as I'd come across alot of scary articles and things, i have done a quick search on here and had no results.

Thankyou xx

I can't answer your question, just wanted to ask if you could let me know how you get on?
I'm possibly going onto cyclosporine for the same thing, my friend has taken it and it may have been that effecting her nails when she first took it but she was so very ill and on many meds so couldn't be certain.

Hi guys, I've had rheumatoid arthritis since i was a baby, I'm now 28, anyway I started methotrexate in 2006, it's been the best drug for my joints, my inflammation came down massively and I went in a few months from being so sore & stiff & constant pain to active, back at the gym and even joining a netball team! :) I haven't noticed any problems with nails at all :) there were a few side effects to begin with - I had lots of muscle cramps but GP gave me something for that. Also can't drink as much as I used to! If I do have a big night out I get a bangin hangover! (hmm, maybe thats due to getting older & not the meds at all!) Wishing you both lots of luck and hope whatever treatment works for you (& your nails!) xxxx

Hi there,
I too take this medication for the treatment of Systemic Lupus and RA. It has worked wonders for me as far as pain, stiffness and inflammation. It has also helped me continue to be a manicurist. Before it my hands were cramping up and hurting so bad it was hard to make it through each service. I have not noticed any effect to my nails they have always been strong and nice. Good luck and I hope it helps you!

Thankyou for your replies there very helpful, You've made me feel better about taking it, although very worried still I just don't want the sickness,

I will keep you updated. I'm always weary if starting new meds as everyones different aren't they, my friends been on it for about 2 years and has swapped back to cyclosporine due to methotrexate effecting her liver function,

Lol I'm 24 and can't drink like I used too, but that's because I have a small child and not used to it goes straight to my head since having him!!

Thanks again xx

Hi,

I too have been on methatrexate for the last two years and have had no affect on my nails and like you now able to things I couldn't do before!

One thing though, I was told that alcohol is not a good idea whilst on the drug because of the liver being affected and if I did have a drink only 1 per week!!
