Hi, im not sure if this question has been asked before if it has then i apologise.

I have done about 5 sets of minx now and do love them but im not sure im filing in the proper way, i am going to the next minx demo day in manchester but for now i wanted to try and improve my technique until the demo day.

so when im filing off the excess some of them are a little ragged!! do i make sense? i think i am prob just not filing correctly or maybe the minx should have cooled down more.

anyone got any ideas??

thanks

thanks i watched it a few times just seems diff doing it for yourself. xxx

hi. i know what you meen about it looking a bit raggy. the first couple i tried om myself seemed like that. i have found that you need to hold the minx bit thats been stuck under the finger with your left hand (if your right handed) between first finger and thumb, the other fingers help to steady the finger. then take the minx file at a 45 degree angle (diagonaly pointing left to the ceiling and right to the floor) and also at a 45 degree angle tilted towards you. IYKWIM. then in quick deliberate fast strokes pull the file downwards towards the peice your holding. i know that sounds a bit complicated, but i couldnt explain it anyway else.
HTH xxxx

I had my toes minxed yesterday for the first time. the tech mentioned they were having problems with the advised way and were now trimming the free edge of the minx right down and then filing with a standard fine grit file (not crystal). This seems to have worked well on me. I am now offering this service and will probably adapt to the way i had mine done. HTH.
Happy new year!

thanks im glad its not just me then. I tried the way aangel just said and file downwards towards the excess minx and that has worked better. cant wait to attend the minx demo day i find it really hard to trim the minx to the right shape etc

just uploaded the pics of the 2 minx i did onto my album and the minx lovers group xx

hi, im glad it worked better for you hun, i think the trick with minx, is to find the way that works best for you. the demo will show you the basics, but then its finding your own technique to doing it. follow their advice, but if say you cant file up, you try down etc (just example). you will find a way that works best and that will not affect the logevity of the product. good luck hun, and the pics look great!!!!

I'm not so sure about the "way that works best for you" advice!

The reason for the suggested method is because it will have the best results. If you file a Minx with a harsh abrasive it will make the edge ragged. The reason Minx recommend a glass file is because it is a very gentle abrasive that won't do this.

The reason they suggest filing downwards is for the same reason: you are cutting off the excess against the hardness of the nail and not dragging it sideways. This is tricky on very short nails so you have to do the best you can.

If you don't use a glass file then use a 240 grit or softer. Try to file downwards if possible then put back under the lamp and rub edge with your thumb to seal the smooth edge onto the nail

Thank you Marian!!! That sounds really simple i did find it didnt look ragged when i filed downwards. It is hard on short nails your right. x

marian, sorry, it didnt meen to come out quite like that. i just ment as in how to hold the file rather than going across V's down.

its all practice i know, and getting the right angle takes practice.

sorry i was a little tired when i posted last and didnt meen to put that as an example.

hope i havnt caused any confusion xx

If you are using the minx file, make sure you give it a good scrub between clients and either air dry or use a hairdryer, to get rid of any residue adhesive, otherwise this can cause problems with the filing.

That's OK :) I hope you understand why I corrected it. I know how hard the Minx girls work to get the right message across in order to give Minx the best shot.

That's a very good suggestion about cleaning the file. It gets really gunked up and ineffective so reaching for a harder file can be too tempting. It needs a good brush too.

Going back under the lamp and rubbing the edge with your thumb is also essential in my opinion. The speed of Minx is good but don't miss out taking care just fr speed. Especially on fingers!

As Marian said, when i had mine done, the tech did put them back under the lamp for 5 minutes before smooth the edge of each nail. it was a very fine grit file and she did it very gently!
