Join the club!!! I've just started the same thing.
I rung the Cutoms and excise this week and registered all my details.
If you plan on earning less than £5075 per year then you can be exempt from paying tax however its only £2.40 per week so i've opted to pay it even though i won't be earning that much as i'm doing it around looking after my 11 month old baby.
The guy at the tax office was really good. He said get 2 books, one for incoming and one for outgoing, keep account of everything because they can call on you at any time. In 6 weeks of registering you will get a unique number which is your company registration number and an info pack. They also offered a half day course on self assesment at the local tax office.
With regards to Insurance I've used ABT, it was pretty cheap.

The number I rang for HM Customs and Excise was 08459 154515.
Hope this helps x:)

Get yourself a nice folder and separate all the months and store all your reciepts so they are easy to get to.

what i do is i have a spread sheet for all my expenditure at the end of each month i record all ive spent and attatch my reciepts so when its time to do my tax return its all to hand.

HTH

Hey tips and toes, hope you get sorted, it can be pretty daunting starting up but HM Customs and Excise weren't half as scary as they sound!!!!
