hey guys....i need a bit of advice.../

im a newly qualified cnd nail tech, pretty confident at doin nails an am improving each time....been lookin for work for a while with no such luck, most ppl want experience....i posted a thread last week about how i got the job then the women could only offer me freelance, she took my number said shed call when she got bookings in, not heard a thing... went for an interview today, didnt realise until i got there that the salon was a NSS so that was a no go....

anyways...with not much luck finding work, iv considered going mobile( was put off b4 bcos i was adament i wanted to gain salon experience first) i just want to kno whether its a good idea? im gettin cards made up as well as an add in a local paper, this sounds silly but im scared im gonna fail, or that im not gonna earn enough to support myself.

is it really possible to make a good living going mobile? and how long do u think it would take to get established enough so that i can leave my other job?

had not much luck lately....think i just need some inspiration...sorry for the moan lol:lol:

erm I will put my two penniths worth !!!

I) do you have a spare room/garage/conservatory you can use, if so convert it !
2)Go round all your local hairdressers and ask if they have space to rent and do saturdays
3) get your leaflets together and go flyer round your local area
4) don't expect instant results !
5) look at doing an add on service such as minx/popits/waxing/spray tannning/lashes/parties

Give it all a go !!! Its slow, Its hard work, its depressing, its elating but you can get there if you are committed.

have a look at my yo yo blogs lol. Make friends, get a mentor but above all if yu believe that you can do this and you are seriously commtted you will get there !

I make a good living being mobile, and for me it wasn't the last resort - I'm no poor man's nail tech :)!!!

It's hard work, you need to be dedicated and resilient and prepared to give it time. Building a client base is not easy or quick and requires a financial commitment as well as an emotional one. If you're half-hearted about it you wont succeed, you need to give it your all and want it to work.

I built my client base by taking the biggest, full-colour ad in the Yellow Pages that I could afford (they offer 40% discount to new advertisers), I got myself on Yell.com and did some local paper advertising as well as leaflet dropping. I market myself as a luxury service - treat yourself to having you nails done in the comfort of your own home.

Also, I genuinely enjoy being mobile. I offer a personal service, I beocme part of people's lives. I love being out and about, I love the freedom that mobile work gives me. Cold winter evenings are hard to face going out into, but then what else would I be doing? Watching tv probably!!

Mobile was my first resort and 5 years later I have no plans to change it.

I was mobile for 10 years and brought up my son on my own during that time. Yes you can earn a living, you will never be rich, but you can earn a living! :)

you will never be rich, but you can earn a living! :)

hmmm, by rich im hopin u mean il never be a millionaire, i mean i still wanna live comfortably lol xx

I can't find a nail tech for love nor money!!! I have been trying to rent space in my salons but cant find anyone remotely interested! THERE IS NOWHERE AROUND EITHER OF MY SALONS DOING NAILS!!!!! I have salons full of clients who would be really interested and nobody to do them.

it cud be bcos of the credit crunch at the moment, ppl are prolly scared to rent bcos business is not as busy at the moment, therefor mite not want to commit to paying rent, thats whats put me off at the moment 2bh....have u tried offering it salary based? if u have loadsa clients interested, it cud work out as a better profit margin for u, that mite b more appealing to nail techs....im only new to this so i could be off the mark, its just a thot :)

xx x

The only reason I looking to rent the space is because its not my trade. I have no idea what I would need to get etc. I would rather concentrate on the hair and beauty.
Thing is, a salon is the place to earn real money. Clients come to you, there is no travel time. A shopfront is still the easiest way to get clients.

where abouts is the salon? what r ur rates like? im not sure y no1s renting, the only reason im not is bcos i dont feel experienced enough, im gonna start off mobile, build my confidence then prolly rent a room or open up a salon an go for that once iv built up a good clientele.... but as for experienced nail techs, iv been told they make more workin for themselves so i dont c a reason y no1 wud rent.... x x x

Where in Scotland are you, Soozi? (I'm near Stirling)

I'm in one of the poshest parts of outer London and I'm asking 80 quid a week. We do 200 clients a week in our salon. No nail salons nearby as the rents are too high for shops round here. Get a bit of experience Hun, and come to Chislehurst!!

Hi Soozi!

If you want to PM someone, just click on their name and go to their profile. Go to "Contact Info" and choose to leave a PM through that page.

I just ask as Scotland's a wee place and it's always good to know some of the locals. I don't know any nail techs in my immediate area - as far as I know, none of them are on this board, but I might not be looking hard enough!

Welcome to the community, and I wish you lots of luck! There's a lot to learn, but there's a lot of help available here.

Dawn x
