Hi, I have just had a letter through the post regarding a licence to play music. I know you need a licence to play music in a salon but do you need a licence if you are mobile and using an ipod to play relaxing music?

Correct me if I'm wrong geeks, but I thought you only needed a
music license if you were playing music in a public place (eg an event, or a shop where anyone is free to enter & therefore listen to the music being played). As you are mobile and playing the music in your clients home I wouldn't have thought this would apply to you? Can you call and ask them?

This is how I understand it.

When I received my letter years ago, I called them and explained my situation and they sent me a letter saying I did not need a licence.

I work from home and people cannot come without an appointment so I am not playing music to the public - if that makes sense.

Unfortunately, the PRS website is down at the moment, but I've found this document http://www.fops.org/prs.pdf and from what I can tell, it looks like you have to pay:irked:

I too had this letter yesterday! Must have had a few busy bees going thro yell.com as they did not know anything re my business name. I am pretty angry @ the price they appear to charge which is one size fits all regardless of size. I don't play music and if I do I ve bought a license free cd which cost half the price of a license and is infinate. I have a home studio in a spare bedroom so likewise is appointment only to 1 person who are 'friends'. I do understand the need to protect the music industry but it pees me off when we re all trying to earn a living and we have no one protecting us with regards to our unique treatments etc.

That's my tuppence worth.

As I said in a previous post above, my understanding from when I spoke to the PRS people was that if you work from home, with one person coming at a time and no walk ins then you do not need a licence - how can they licence you for playing music in your own home.

If you have a street front salon where people can walk in off the street then you will need a licence.

To get it from the horses mouth it is best to call the people who have sent the letter and clarify this rather than getting all hot and bothered about something which may not apply to you.

I'm sick to death of them sending me letters! have emailed them twice to explain I am mobile and do not play music to clients! grrrr lol xx

I recieved a letter regarding playing music in my home-based salon, I was told that i needed a license to do this, which would cost £99.00....!!

Thanks for all your feedback. I have just tried calling them to find out if you do need a licence for mobile and they are closed until monday 4th Jan so will try again then and let you all know! Its ridiculous if you do have to pay if you are mobile after all who's going to know if you play music or not because its not going to be loud is it!!:)

I have always found them to be quite aggressive in their pursuit of royalties.I cannot see why a mobile should be charged. (cant see why salons should pay either, pop stars are rich enough)

I would suggest you tell them when you ring that you have a prior agreement with your clients that they play their own music, that way you should NOT have to have a license.

Failing this I would buy some royalty free music, this is what we do in our salon. We have a letter written by the guy who produced the CD'S(there are loads of gorgeous ones)explaining that he is NOT registered with any collection agency and gives permission for us to play his music. All in all we have saved ourselves £100's of pounds over several years.

The PRS can be a right pain though and it took a long time before they left us alone.

i got one too, i work mobile so don't really use music, unless the customer puts it on
lets face it who would even know if you did??

i was advised that as a mobile therapist, if i wanted to play music of any kind whilst treating clients in their homes that i would need a licence, however, if my client put the music on from their own collection, i would not need one. a home based salon is no different to a salon anywhere else, if u are playing music to a paying client, u need a licence. i was told all this recently so i believe this to be correct info and up to date. but like already stated, who would know who put the music on anyway!

hope this helps x

we had to pay around 70 quid to play music(radio) in my sons salon/barbers shop but i believe it also covered the TV in the waiting area
I know a girl who does fitness classes at our local leisure centre and she has paid 35 ish but can only OFFICIALLY!! do 65 ? sessions a year
to be honest with illegal downloads/counterfeiting ect musicians are getting a raw deal and i sympathize with the PRS and understand why they are pursuing the licence fees
one of my sons is a musician (guitar) and it has taken him years to learn to play and compose.write music
The big stars are loaded but your average session musician composer is a struggling highly skilled proffesional on a very low anual income the fees from PRS licence goes to PRS union members
as a mobile therapist for one person i believe your exempt from payment but if you were doing a class for instance and using backgroung music then its around 35 quid a year:rolleyes::rolleyes:

Hi, thank you. Can you tell me where you got your royalty free music from?:green:
