nail bar salon job plz advise

Hi guys ive been working mobile for friends n family for a about a year and work in retail part time to cover the bills.
I recently decided i wanted to work in a salon and was approached by a nail/ beauty salon offering part time work on a 40% commission basis of each client i treat. Does any one else work like this? Just looking to see what you guys think and if anyone is in this situation and how well does it work out?.
Because im not nvq level 2 i have lots of seperate qualifications within beauty and nails im struggling to find work within a salon so i did think this sounded quite good?? What do you think???

hi im not in the nail and beauty sector but i am self employed hairdresser renting a chair in a salon, this works well for everyone there because what ever we take we keep the lot but pay an amount per day or half day.

but we do have to supply our own individual stock etc and chip in together for things like shampoo that we all use.

my point being if you are on a commission base, make sure u are'nt paying for anything on top, or it def wont be worth it. also its going to depend on the cost of the treatments on how long it will take u as to the profit u can make per hour.

does this job come with a cientelle waiting?? i had to start from scratch, worked days the salon used to be closed and was a newbie with no reputation, 5 years on though and im struggling to find enough hours in the day for everyone. point being might not be worth it if the profit is low as well as the clientelle but it could still be a good starting point if ur struggling to be taken on.

once youv got experience in a salon setting it will become easier to be taken on without the standard nvq's.

i forgot to put in its a salon thats been taken over by new management so im hoping it will already have clientel. I did see a price list which is quite expensive. I have been told that i dont have to rent a room or buy equiptment everything is supplied. Its literally i work and get the 40% commission. But i have my interview wed so ill wait and see what else get said thaks for the reply

go for the interview and get a feel for the place, no-one says you have to take the job so whats the harm, u might get the vibe that says yes i want to go for this, if not, i'm sure it will give u abit more of an idea what u want to get out of things to and make sure they include products when they say equipment etc.

40 % is probably average i would of thought. i got approached and offered another job in another salon on the same basis of 40% to me, but it was to far away to take my clientelle iv worked soo hard for even though it had clientelle waiting, it was'nt worth my effort in the fact where i work i get what ever i take which is always going to be more profitable to me.

when u think about the break down ur probably splitting 50/50 with them in the fact of taking off 20% for costs. i should imagine ur using alot more products generally then what i do, as i can do a dry cut and have no overheads as such.

maybe u should take a copy of the price list, work out how long it will take u per the treatment and see how much profit u will get out of each service. then see if its worth ur time to start with.

could you still work ur retail job part time and work at this place the rest of the time til things pick up?

i see ur from reading, is it in reading? my mums side is from there so know it quite well

also the place i got offered a job at, offered me a low wage to start with till the clientelle was up, definately find out if they would be willing to negotiate a start up period where u could either get more percentage per client or give u a set wage for so many months???

also dont forget the standard tax, n.i and indemnity you need to cover urself

Hi there, I work in a local hair salon, they approached me to work in the salon offering nails as a new service. I provide all my own products, they provide the clientelle and we have agreed on 25%, so far its slow to move, but each week I get new clients. I currently only work 2 days a week, but am hoping eventually to work full time on nails and quit the boring office job I do!!! Still its the bread and butter at the moment, so I must be patient. Prices differ depending on the area, but its always worth trying to negotiate down, as it will be near on impossible to lower it in the future, or at least see if it can be reviewed in a few months time depending on how things go..Hth
