Hi All
I am in the process of openning a Nail room above my Salon in Cheshire iam looking to employ a Nail technician but i have no idea of which products are best (I realise that this may vary from area to area but i could do with a general idea). I heard OPi are good and Nsi ?
I have noticed that most are self employed and wondered how hard its going to be to hire a technician.
If you dont mind me asking what would i be looking to pay a good technician (North west Area)
All and any information would help
Thanks

Hi

Until recently we had a salon.

We used Bio Sculpture Gel and OPI for manicures/pedicures.

However nobody in our area ever heard of OPI so retail sales were a problem. You will need to look at what other salons are using in your area. I always went with the approach that I liked to be different to all the other salons in every way.

I have several Nail Techs, and I paid them an hourly rate that was suited for our area plus commission on their treatments and on any retail products sold. They also had a bonus if they reached a monthly target.

With regards to whether you'll find a Nail Tech who is willing to be employed - I don't know. I found that there are 2 different kind of nail techs, those that love being within the salon environment and are content with going to work, earning a good days crust and going home - and then there's the other kind who are more ambitious, like the flexibility of being self-employed and also the biggest perk is that they are on more money.....

Unfortunately for me, I am a Bio Sculpture Educator so my salon was a great starting point for someone to obtain or advance their nail skill and knowledge, therefore despite contracts, I would find that it wasn't a shock to learn that someone is leaving (after training her up to an excellent standard) to start up mobile and 9/10 would try to take clients with her.... this is soul destroying...

However, they were not all like that, and owning a salon is very rewearding and also difficult.

Perhaps think about renting a table out as opposed to employing someone, therefore they have an invested interest.

Good luck with whatever you decide......:)

Thanks that helps
I know what you mean about people leaving we have had some of that in the Hair Salon we have contracts with radius clauses but not far enough.
I like the idea of incentives i may even consider a small profit share scheme.
we use them in the Salon but for some reason it never crossed my mind for the Nail room
Thanks again
