Hi all :)

I'm new here and would love some advice.

I am 27 years old and currently working in a boring desk job, which i hate with a passion. I have always been interested in beauty and make up and I'm kicking myself for not training to be a beauty therapist when I was younger. I am exploring the possibility of training to become a therapist now but I do have financial responsibilities (mortgage!), which means that I won't be able to go back to college to train full time.

Does anyone have any advice on how I can train in this industry other than the full time NVQ courses?

Thanks in advance

hello

You can do a series of private courses. However, a word of advice, BEFORE you embark on this route you need to check out who you choose to train with, that the training is excellent and also that the certificate entitles you to gain insurance.

Its one way of doing courses, maybe one at a time (I did all mine together, I was bonkers!!) and go from there. If you need any pointers or general help I am sure there will be geeks in your area willing to offer their experience or recommendations on private training companies in your area.

best of luck chick and welcome welcome welcome to salon geek. We are glad you have found us.

there are night time part time courses which i did at the manchester college i did 3 half days 1st year n second year i did 2 nights a week at northden campus so i dont no weather they are still doing it like that but its worth checking out hope i helped

Look for accredited recognised training centres. We run an nvq 1 day per week for 25 weeks which allows people to work and learn. X

i agree with what others have said. there are many of us on here with financial commitments and kids which make it not so easy to go to college fulltime. have a look at weekened college and evening college or like others have said private courses.

i was originally going to go to college to do beauty and hairdressing and then my partners work turned around and said the hours they had offered him had been given to somebody else so *shrug* and i just can't can't can't put my youngest in childcare and let somebody else bring him up s o private courses were the way to go for me.

people are so quick to bitch about 1 day courses, but if you are willing to actually put the work in after the course has finished and not assume you are an expert that knows everything then i don't think there's a problem. be realistic about the training and be realistic about when it comes to making money from the training you have had.

good luck with whatever you decide! :D

Welcome to Salon Geek :green:

I am not sure what part of Surrey you are in but Guildford College does lots of part time and evening course for NVQ2 Beauty Therapy. The only downside is that they are full so you probably wont be able to attend untill next September but apply early if you go down this route.

Carlton Institute in Windsor also does an NVQ course and it is fast track. I cannot say what the training is like here some Geeks seem to advise some dont, a Beauty Therapist who I know did this route and said it was great.

I think do some research and see what fits yourself and current commitments.

Good Luck! xx

Thank you for all your replies, it's so nice to be able to get answers from people who have actually been through the training process
I have looked into the Carlton Institute in Windsor. I like the idea of doing the day courses, but I'm worried that I won't get enough practical experience with this kind of course?

I have looked at part time courses at Guildford, Kingston and Brooklands College as these are the colleges that I would be able to get to for an evening course. Guildford has a level 2 course in beauty therapy which looks interesting, but am I right in thinking that I wouldn't be able to get a job in a salon with just a level 2 qualification?

Kingston college seems to have loads of beauty courses. They are VTCT courses and split into different subject areas, so I'm guessing I would have to do all/most of them before I could be employed?

Sorry if I am asking stupid questions, my brain is buzzing with all the different courses!

hi ive just started teaching year 10 students about hairdressing. the course is called the "entry level 3. introduction to the hair and beauty sector" and ive found this age group quite difficult, i dont know if anyone is in the same place or has been, im a hairdresser and love my trade, and i get my staff to be nthusiastic about hair in the salon, but dont seem to get the same response in the classroom.... help!!?? any ideas would be appreciated muchly

thanx toni:lol:

from the research i did i got the impression that nvqs are only really needed if you want to work for somebody else in their salon but as for mobile etc then private courses were fine... maybe somebody else will come along to correct me there if i have got it wrong? :\

what career/job do you want at the end of your training?

as far as getting experience goes then just because you go to college it doesn't mean you will get any more practical experience whatso ever. i know when we was at college the practical was demonstrated on a student and then off we'd go to practise it on each other. we had a few days of practical where you could check the appointment book in reception (you'd be lucky if any random people booked in, and even luckier if you got them before somebody else did!) and then perform the treatment if you had been taught it. the rest of the time you would be doing the treatments on each other whilst reading out of your work book until you were confident enough to doit without. if you put in the hard work and practise after you have done your private course then you will be in the same position... the only difference being you would have a tutor walking around to check up on you as you practised at college. though lets be honest a class of 30 people with just 1 tutor you pretty much are on your own doing your treatment anyway.
