Hi,

I am finding that my times for treatments are just completely off the mark. For facials and massage, I am fine because I find it easy to cut down certain aspects and still give a good treatment.

However for manicures and pedicures (esp manis), I just take forever. I always have happy customers and give 100% but sometimes I feel like time flies and I try to go fast while still doing a good job and end up going over anywhere from 10-30 mins. I work at a small upmarket salon so because I work the slower days with less appointments, it's been fine but I am concerned for the future, I don't want to create havoc on busy days.

Waxing is even worse, I try to give myself lots of time because I know I am slow, I try to wax fast and get a bit sweaty trying to go quick but again my times are awful. I even have to change gloves 2-3 times cause they do tend to sweat while waxing. I feel so embarrassed it takes me over an hour for a full leg and worse for a bikini. We never double dip either and honestly that's a bit time consuming because I have to use tissues to wrap each end of the spatula.

My confidence isn't too bad, I have received massive tips waxing and have been told by clients that my wax has been the best they've had but I want that feedback while being quick. I am also a perfectionist and always feel guilty when there's hair still left and try my best to get it off. However honestly I have gone over areas twice, and then attempted to tweeze but again..soo slow at tweezing I just kind of give up.

I am planning to do a waxing course soon but unfortunately working minimum wage and paying rent makes it hard to save for courses.

Is this normal? I used to work as a facialist and before that I did mostly massages while studying beauty so this is really my first time doing waxing and nails out of school. Any advice?

I use to take an hour and a half for a full leg wax. It takes time, but you WILL get quicker. Have faith. Everybody is slow in the beginning. Also can you suggest to your salon to use wax rollers as opposed to wax spatulas and pot wax, as it is SO much quicker and less messy! xxx

Thanks Roxy x

My salon won't change anything but only because the owner/manager is never around. I feel so much better knowing it's not just me.

I had a massive blow to my confidence today because I had a client who came in who thought a bikini meant everything came off and because she had such fair hair, a standard or even a high bikini was almost useless. It was her first ever time getting waxed and she had never had anything done before including brows so it was extremely nerve racking having a squeamish and very loud client. She was really skeptical too like I explained normal reactions and she would be like, is it meant to be so pink...I explained I couldn't do a Hollywood but would take off as much as I could.

I am also having trouble using Euroblonde, the Perron Rigot wax. It's a completely different texture to what I've used in the past at school. I called up the company and the only training they offer is external and is completely out of my non existent budget.

I will wait it out until that magical day I'm at a normal speed haha

What are you using the euroblonde for? Is it just bikinis? If you are using strip wax for some treatments and euroblonde for others, double check your temperature and consistency. You need your strip wax thinner and your euroblonde a lot cooler and thicker.
I used to hate full leg waxes and they would take me forever but I quite like them now. Once you add it all up, waxing is extremely lucrative.

Good luck

I use be nervous too. Be confident in what you say (easier said than done). If they can see you doubting yourself then they will doubt you and ask questions about when you qualified etc. ensure the salon allocates longer slots for you as your a beginner. Act confident and you will become confident xx

No you are not alone, I have been waxing for a few years now and I hate doing a full leg wax as it can still take me up to an hour. Do not let this knock your confidence as speed will come with time and practise. I too wrap tissues around my spatulas and yes it does take longer but when you explain to your clients why you are doing it, they really do appreciate it. Finger nails are taking me quite a while as well.

The Euroblonde wax you are using is fantastic but I only use this on intimate, underarms and facial waxing. I use strip wax for larger areas. Once you get the right consistancy you will love it and so will your clients.

Good luck

Thanks for the replies ladies.

I use strip wax for larger areas such as legs and forearms and sometimes inner thighs but then hot wax (Euroblonde at the moment) when getting inside the bikini line. I use hot wax for underarms and toes however I've been taught with strip too. I only use strip wax for brows because I feel more confident in such an important area. But again, I've been taught both for facial waxing.

The salon was absolutely dead today so I practised my application of Euroblonde on my colleague and the application and removal was fine. I think I get more flustered when I have to take more hair from the bikini line than normal because the hair is more coarse/longer and its harder to do good patches in that area cause you are applying at odd angles (if that makes sense). Waxing down there is not like doing a few nice little neat patches on your wrist or someone's leg really..it's a whole different game haha.

We keep Euroblonde at the lowest temperature because it's hot wax and it heats up more easily.

I will feel much much better once I do some hollywood waxing training. I found a course that's a little cheaper than the one that Perron Rigot recommends plus they still use the same brand. Has anyone heard or done nkd waxing training?

Btw, my salon does not advertise hollywood waxes and we are allowed to refuse treatment to customers for waxing. None of the girls use hot wax so they only do standard bikini's, legs, brows, lips with strip. I want to be able to specialise and gain confidence not just for myself but so I am able to offer these treatments to customers when they request them. Like Vicki mentioned, I think waxing is definitely lucrative and it's not likely to disappear from the industry anytime soon!

A bit unrelated but I think it's part of the reason some of us therapists lack confidence is because of the lack of training in our schools. In my school especially even though I've almost got the top beauty qualifications (getting my hours up for CIDESCO now), we didn't have a student salon open to the public so all I ever did was practise waxing on other students. I think hair growth is so different with young girls who regularly get waxed versus a mixed clientele that generally have a lot more hair.
