Hi all.

Not sure if this is the right place to post but, here goes and, I hope those of you that have been in the industry for longer than me can give me some constructive advice/tips!

I am VERY new to the beauty industry & I am just starting out as an Eyelash Technician so, I don't have a customer base as yet and have yet to get my name known out in the big wide world! I am literally re-training to start a whole new career for myself. I still work full time so my lash business will be part time (evening and weekends) until I think it would be viable enough for me to leave my office job (this is what my aim is so will be working extremely hard at it to make it work!!) and concentrate on this as my main source of income. I want to do HD Brows sometime next year (but need to save up for the course first!) and also want to do Gelish nails. These are the only 3 aspects of the beauty industry I want to excel at and become a master in! The gelish course I want to do starts in about 5 months time (I qualify as an eyelash technician in about 3 weeks) and, after chatting with my husband about it, he thinks I should concentrate on lashes first and get a concrete customer base before I start thinking about doing anything else.

What would your advice be? He thinks it is too soon to be thinking about doing training in something else as I have no customers at the moment (well, friends and family but that's all right now as I am not promoting myself until I am qualified!) but my view is that if I have a couple of treaments to offer I will get an array of clients. Eyelash extensions aren't for everyone as is the same with gelish nails so, offering 2 treatments would help get more clients under my belt?

I really want to make this business work for me (I will be mobile also) as I enjoy it so much but, perhaps I am getting a bit ahead of myself? What did you do when you first started out? Did you do one training course at a time and, how long did you leave it before you took another course? How long did it take for you to get your customer base so that you were u booked up on a regular basis?

Any advice, stories, tips that you can share will be greatly appreciated!

Thank you :)

I think you can run the risk of doing too much too soon. If you are new to the industry then perfect your art, become THE person to come to for lashes in your area and when you are confident and can do it with your eyes closed - expand. I made the mistake of starting tanning, then did an ITEC Beauty Specialist at the same time as starting a business! Then I did nail extensions but in all honesty it was too much and I have not had time for nails so have not perfected it and do not want to offer it until it is perfect. I have made plenty of mistakes but have learnt from each and every one.

I have spent nearly 2 years honing in on the tanning market in my area and am now at a place where it brings me repeat clients and a decent income. Beauty is getting there but I have a long way to go.

Think of it as a Marathon, not a sprint. If is your new life long career then you have plenty of time. Good luck! It is hard work but well worth it xx

I think the learning curve is very steep and frequent early on in a beauty career compared to when you are a good few years into it.

If you have an urge to learn something right now then embrace it because it is possible to learn more than one thing at a time.

Personally I would think about doing a tanning course. It is very easy to learn and master. I'd cheaper to set up and you can learn it on a day course. People love there spray tans and it is very popular. At the moment it is my most popular treatment and generates a lot of extra work. Plus a spray tan is very quick to do. You could even offer spray tan parties mobile in the evening.
Hope that helps. I use suntana. It is fab middle of range price and results are always consistent.
