Hi all,

I am just about to go live as a mobile beauty therapist (whoop whoop!) and just had a few questions from you guys as you are the ones that know best....

1. I cant decide which insurance is the best for mobile out of BABTAC, Guild or ABT - can anyone make any recommendations? Also do you know if any of these cover you for treatments on men (eg waxing backs) when doing this in their home or do they all say keep well clear. I dont want to limit my market but at the same time want to be safe...

2. I am planning to do mobile in the evenings as well as weekends as I work full time (boo) and just wondered if anyone has any tips on safety or how to approach appointments when attending clients houses in the evenings when you havent been there before? Obvoiusly I am concerned about my safety and want to do everything possible to make sure a client is legitmate... any advice would be appreciated.

3. Also I was thinking working hours until 10pm or 9pm or do you think this is still risky and maybe finish earlier, even though the earliest I can do is from 5-6pm?

Looking forward to hearing what tips you pro's can give a little newcomer like me?

Thanks Charlie :smack:

Hi, I have been mobile for a couple of months now and work evenings from 7 to 10. I don't do male clients from a safety point of view, I wouldn't be comfortable being on my own in a mans house doing a massage, but thats my preference (and my husbands!!). I keep two diaries with all contact details of where Im going and leave one at home for my hubbie, he knows how long I should be and when to expect me back. (Got that idea from this site) Also if I did go to a client and didn't feel too secure I would make a point of calling my husband in front of the client. Luckly so far every client has been lovely and have all rebooked. HTH :)

I am with salon gold. It covers me for working from home and mobile also cartilage piercing as I do ear piercing too. Some companies will only insure you to pierce lobes.
I cant imagine insurance companies not insuring you to wax mens backs.

Ive been mobile for nearly 5 years and never had a problem so far (touch wood)
Make sure you ALWAYS speek to your client on the phone before their appointment! Take their full address and leave a copy of it with your other half.
My tutor at college said to me once 'if you dont feel comfortable in any situation then get out of it' I will always remember that beacause your safety is more important than any amount of money!!! I have only acted on this once. You have to go with your gut.
I choose not to treat men. I will do if they are my clients partner etc but not a random man. Thats just my personal preference. Doesnt mean to say it's wrong to treat men. They are not all perverts.
I have worked up until 12 at night when I have been so busy that I couldnt fit my regulars in. If you dont feel comfortable then only offer late appointments to clients you have been to before.
Sorry my short little reply ended up turning into an essay xxx

I can hear the knashing of male therepist teeth already.
So before they all point out that they are not the mad rapist, I will make the point that unfortunatly the mad rapist doesn't have it tattooed on his forhead and that the ladies are not saying all men are, just that they have to be careful otherwise they might just meet him.
So on to being careful, new male clients can be approched in a couple of different ways, you can accept them on a referal basis, or take someone with you until you know them well enough to be comfortable. When I worked in Pulse we had a lady who did male waxing, the set up there is a large open area with 3 cubicles, these can be locked for client comfort and our lady didn't want to be locked in with a stranger, so one of us would go in with her and sit the other side of a curtain, he got his privicy, she got her safety.
I've started a couple of threads on safety first, do a search, they will come up and are full of good advice from lovely geeks.
As for how late you work, the only thing to be aware of is not to carry large amounts of cash on you, it's not your client you need to worry about but the area's you might be working in and the local yobs.
Good luck with your new business and I hope you are so busy that you give up the day job:hug:

Susie that was so very well put :) xxx

I've had a few clients who although fantastic clients live in less desirable parts of town and this was always my concern when I started. I would often leave a clients house at 11pm creeping to my car half expecting something to have happened to it.

Luckily touch wood everything has been ok and its important to follow safety rules for being out late as well as at the clients place.

Try and park as close to the persons house as you can or at least so that you are not having to walk half way down the street (I dont always follow this myself as my parking leaves a lot to be desired and I need a wide berth :green:)

Also make sure the usual car safety is in order, when we work out of our cars it is easy to have stuff strewn all over the place so make sure everything is out of sight etc so not to attract attention and make sure you pick up your phone, sat nav etc (I have often forgotten this) so it doesnt stand out to an opportunist.

Im with Salon Gold. They are brilliant. They cover all treatments.

Make sure you leave the address and details with a friend or family member and say to them that you will text them when you have arrived at your clients house. This is what i do with my mum.

3. Also I was thinking working hours until 10pm or 9pm or do you think this is still risky and maybe finish earlier, even though the earliest I can do is from 5-6pm?

I would take the last appointment at 9pm

Looking forward to hearing what tips you pro's can give a little newcomer like me?

Thanks Charlie :smack:

If you want some pointers in what to look for in an insurance company, take a look at http://www.salongeek.com/business/67348-insuring-your-success.html.

The Guild can offer you £2 million Public, Product & Treatment Liability cover, as well as a whole host of other benefits which you can read about here. If you quote Geek as a referral code when joining, you will also get a £10 discount.

We do cover you to perform treatments on men as long as you are properly qualified in the relevant treatments.

If you need any other help, take a look at Beauty Guild : Home - Beauty Guild or feel free to give us a call on 0845 2177 383.

Thanks everyone, you have installed confidence in me and probably like everyone you always assume the worst. I took my first 'official booking today' yeah.. I took your advice spoke to her (and she did sound like a woman - thank god) so I have booked her in for a couple of weeks once the insurance is all sorted. My fella is going to wait outside whilst I do my first few appointments for reassurance for me and him and I have taken your comments onboard.

Thanks everyone, wish me luck

Charlie xx
